Christ gave up his flesh for the life of the world (John 6:51) on the Cross. We abstain from flesh meat in commemoration of this sacrifice on the cross.Did not Christ also give up his blood, more than symbolized by wine in the Mass? If so, why not also refrain from wine on Good Friday, or is this already the case?
Yes, sacramentally he gives us his Body and Blood under the form of bread and wine. However, we aren’t called to give up bread and wine. We are called to receive them in the Eucharist.
The Triduum is one continuous liturgy. There is no Mass on Good Friday. Therefore, the communion we receive on Good Friday are hosts reserved in the tabernacle from Holy Thursday. There is no consecration, no wine that becomes the blood of Christ. If so, why not also refrain from wine on Good Friday, or is this already the case?
But it isn’t because we are abstaining from wine.
