Wonderful! I’m sure everyone had a good time celebrating that joyous occasion and each other’s company. Then, they walked home and slept soundly.

No harm? You called it Satan’s drink!
Yeah, there’s no backpedaling away from that comment…
Now I am a big coffee drinker - to give that up for Lent would certainly be a bigger hardship for me than alcohol, which I do not drink regularly
I like beer but I think giving up Starbucks would be harder 😟 That rich dark roast with hints of cocoa… 😋

but don’t try to sell the idea that it is for some thing other than for getting an intoxication feeling or for getting intoxicated.T
With this, you’ve crossed the line from ignorance to willful ignorance.
You can still get unfiltered beer.
Oh, I know . . . but it’s not easy, unless I make my own.

Even most brewpubs filter these days . . . (though it’s getting better) . . .
A Baptist friend once told me, with a very straight face, that Christ actually turned water into grape juice without a trace of that pesky sinful alcohol… it all came down to translation issues…
Yeah, I’ve hit this . . . and had a Baptist professor who noted that that he got in trouble as a kid for not understanding why Jesus got in trouble for drinking too much Welch’s . . .

I like coffee.

Drinking Starbucks would be harder. 🤮 It’s burnt, not strong. (and, yes, I do own a couple of coffee roasters . . .)

As I said before three doctors recommended a glass of wine a day. They did this without asking if I drank so yes doctors do recommend that nondrinkers have a glass of red wine a day. It does have cardiovascular benefits.
I do know the havoc alcoholism can wreak in a family and if someone chooses not to drink for that reason fine but dont paint those of us who drink as terrible people. I don’t drink every day but it is fine if someone does.

I dont drink. I used to. I think drinking enough to get drunk and lose control over ones free will on purpose is a sin many people commit and excuse away. I think the problem is not addressed in and out if Church the way it should be. I also think there is nothing wrong and maybe even something a tad bit theological about alchohol. Personally I dont like wine and I think beer is disgusting, but “hard” alcohol I find incredibly delicious. Alcoholic beverages are not evil, they can and should be used and enjoyed by those who enjoy them.

Yup. I had a beer last year on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. 🍻
I’m drinking a beer and smoking my pipe. 😈

Good man.
Beer is very nutritious, IF…you are not quaffing the mass produced brews, which are nutrition-neutral.
I can guarantee you, the beer I make in the garage is heavy on nutrition, and is a good attitude adjuster also.

The others have answered about the reasons for not doing this in the past. I’d guess why they don’t change it nowadays might be because of the addictions people have to alcohol (so it is really up to them to sort out in their own time - ie that freedom of choice God gave us) and the fact that there is already the limit of moderation on drinking alcohol so again with the freedom of choice and then we always have the choice (freedom of) to give it up for Lent and/or to limit it for Lent if it is necessary or to Fast from it on those days. Just cos we are told to give up meat on those days and fast on others doesnt mean we can’t add on our own fasts, or that we shouldn’t. If we are able we absolutely should. In fact we should be doing that as a matter of course every day of every year, giving up little things here and there for love of God.

Heck, the actual Puritans drank!

The roots of American prohibition had a strong link to Anti-Catholicism. Ken Burns’ “Prohibition” is a good place for our OP to begin learning about this.

Can you elaborate on this? I can’t recall ever hearing about Jesus getting in trouble lol
my assumption was His comment about the folks who couldn’t be satisfied by anything, fist complaining about John’s austerity, and now about him coming eating and drinking, but . . .
