"YOU CAN ALWAYS tell when a public figure has written an indefensible book: when he refuses to debate it in the court of public opinion. And you can always tell when he’s a hypocrite to boot: when he says he wrote a book in order to stimulate a debate, and then he refuses to participate in any such debate. I’m talking about former president Jimmy Carter and his new book “Palestine Peace Not Apartheid.”

You quoting Alan Dershowitz? This is all “the bait” you’ve got?

If there is one person in the world that Jimmy Carter has faith in, it is Jimmy Carter. He has been an arrogant, meddling, thorn-in-the-side of every president who came after him: Reagan, Bush the First, Clinton, and now Bush #2.
I sincerely believe that this man, whose disastrous meddling in our allie’s internal affairs in the 70s caused the collapse of their governments, feels any need to debate anything with anybody as he can never believe that he could be wrong about anything.

Worst President since Buchannan. In the top 5 worst Presidents of all time.

MORE BAITING? This comment doesn’t even speak to your original post, Bob. But in the spirit of the season, let me give you an answer that gives you your money’s worth!😃

Top 5 Worst? Really Bob? You forgot to write: IMO.

The only president to broker a lasting peace agreement in the middle east is one of the worst? A Nobel Prize winner is one of the worst? A man with global respect and appreciation for his efforts to broker peace, ensure fair elections, build houses for the poor…well, that’s your idea of “worst”, not everyone’s.

As for the far-right shill Dershowitz, he just needs his media time.

Here is what Carter himself has to say in next week’s Newsweek about the debate in Israel, worldwide, and the lack of it here:

Of course, it depends on the survey and whether it is Historians ranking or the public. C-Span has a good list…
americanpresidents.org/survey/historians/

Regarding your other comments:
  1. What a president does after he leaves office does not effect whether he was a good or bad president. His foreign policies while he was in office are widely considered a failure.
  2. Arafat also won the Nobel Prize for Peace…it is a meaningless joke IMO.
  3. You are the only person I’ve ever heard describe Derschowitz as a “far-right shill.” He’s a liberal on just about everything - big Clinton fan, for example - but he happens to support the War on Terror.

I was a young buck of 17 to 21 while Carter was in the White House. I know Bush #2 is not a good president at all,
but Carter in office was absolutely horrendous. We had the highest unemployment and inflation rates I have ever seen.
Carter even planned to bring back the Draft had he been re-elected. When the economy went South, Carter actually had the Chutzpah to go on National Television and berate the American people. The guy was, and is, a self-promoting JERK.

What specifially did Mr Dershowitz write that was factually incorrect?

.
All one needs to know to realize what a farce the Nobel peace prize is to note that Arafat got one and Reagan did not.

It seems like Mr. Dershowitz is annoyed that Jimmy Carter won’t debate it with him, personally. His own article details various places where he has debated it in public, even if Mr Dershowitz isn’t satisifed with the quality of the debate. He was more than happy to write a column about it in The Guardian last week, for example.

(well, ok, it was a reprint from the LA Times)

What exactly do you think Reagan should have got a Peace Prize for? Invading Grenada? Bombing Libya? Funding the Contras? Arming Saddam Hussein? Refusing to apologise for the shooting down of an Iranian passenger plane? Funding the Mujahadeen in Afghanistan?

Arafat won the Peace Prize jointly with Peres and Rabin, at a time when Oslo looked like an important breakthrough. Perhaps it was somewhat premature, but I don’t see any bad faith in the award.

However, given that Kissinger won it, I have to agree that the Nobel Peace Prize can be somewhat of a farce.
