If you think helping one another and carrying each other’s burdens is socialism than you better get your Bible out and read it more carefully. We would not have to depend on the government if we took care of each other when down and out. It’s not a free hand out it is a HANDUP. Back to what Jesus says all through the Word help one another, carry one another’s burdens, pray for one another (have you noticed how everyone seems to be for one’s own self these days and doesn’t give a hoot about old Joe down the street who has cancer and no way to get to his radiation treatments? Whats wrong with you???
Helping others is what we as Catholic Christians are obligated/taught supposed to do. But you are really stretching to say that everyone is for themselves and doesn’t give a hoot about old Joe. I have never seen where people don’t go out of there way and more to help a person in need. It is all around us.

Well Mr. or Mrs whoever you are, I don’t see it happening anymore and from what you said, tells me that you are of the pull yourself up by your bootstraps philosophy and there’s no such thing as a free lunch. Why do you think Jesus put us here in the first place…to place others before ourSELVES. Your post tells me that you are for the one who advocates self. Everything republicans advocate is self centered. Privitize medicare, health care, social security… this is not Christ like. It’s no more than hedonism and selfishness.

Not sure who you are responding to as you don’t indicate…but if it is me…you are assuming a lot of things that are not so.

Helping one another and carrying each other’s burdens is not socialism.

Being taxed – having money taken by force of law to pay for the charity we should be giving ourselves – that’s socialism
We would not have to depend on the government if we took care of each other when down and out.
If the government wouldn’t take so much from us and squander it, we’d have plenty to take care of the poor.

Then, why don’t churches stand up and do what they should be doing for the poor and mentally ill? If you say they are, then prove it to me with statistics and facts.

Pardon me, but what you have said here tells me that if you saw what we do routinely, you’d turn your head and still claim we do nothing.
Why do you think Jesus put us here in the first place…to place others before ourSELVES.
And we do that – we are not the kind of people who think other people should do it – and be forcibly taxed to pay for it.
Your post tells me that you are for the one who advocates self.
Odd, that’s the impression I get from your posts. You seem to advocate everyone else should be forced to do these things. I don’t see you advocating hard work, or accepting **personal **responsibility for the poor in your community.
Everything republicans advocate is self centered.
Everything Democrats advocate is self-centered – “Have government pay for it, don’t expect me to pull my share of the load.”
Privitize medicare, health care, social security… this is not Christ like. It’s no more than hedonism and selfishness.
Sociaiize medicare, health care, social security. Get someone else to pay for it. Don’t expect me to carry my share of the load… this is not Christ like. It’s no more than hedonism and selfishness

Here’s what my little church in Mountain View, Arkansas, does:

We have a Catholic Charities Disaster Relief team – we provide long-term services to victims of disasters.

We have designated our church as an emergency shelter – we are holding extra collections to buy a standby generator and lay in a stock of non-perishable food and bedding.

We have an outreach to a local Assisted Living facility – six of our congregation are mentially defficient, and we welcome them and incorporate them into the parish community.

We hold fundraisers for our local Right to Life chapter, and provide assistance to a crisis pregnancy center.

We work with other churches in Dorcas – a facility that collects clothes, kitchen gear and other necessities of life for the poor.

We took in a family from Hurricane Katrina, found jobs for them, and they decided to stay here with us.

Other members of the congregation independently do things – I tutor kids in math and science. My wife trains Certified Nursing Assistants. One couple has an adopted mixed-race child who is wheelchair bound and on a respirator – and will be so for the rest of his life.

I am not voting for any candidate because my conscience won’t let me. This forum makes me want to cry because everyone seems to be focused on one thing only. Abortion is horrible and anyone advocating it should be beheaded. I’m not sure I want to be catholic anymore. I’m pro-life. but I believe in the importance of other issues out there as well.
Hello Gloworm. I think you and I are of many of the same opinions in this thread. I have come to the conclusion I PROBABLY won’t vote (which is an easy out) because of the take on the Sanctity of Life by all candidates still running for the Presidency. What I think is there must be protection of life at the beginning, MIDDLE (any stage) and the end. Therefore I can’t vot eGOP because of the Iraqi war. I can’t vote DEM because of their outlook on abortion. Who is left, I would like to know? 🙂 Peace

I can assure you, no matter how much money the government takes from you and re-distributes to the poor or whomever, does not help you get to heaven. Personal charity however does.

Hi Elt1956,

I tend to think that people are having difficulty grasping the numbers. 50 million minutes ago it was 1912, the year the Titanic sank. We just hit 4,000 deaths in the war, 4,000 minutes was only two days ago. The war is like a bucket of water in the ocean as compared to abortion.

My partner is Japanese, the two of us went up to the roof of our building and saw the second plane hit the WTC. We watched the whole City become swallowed by a cloud of rubble when the towers collapsed. We watched thousands of our innocent neighbors die in front of our very eyes, and worst of all, for no reason. From his perspective: “Japan had the dignity to fly planes with their own colors and the honor to attack a Military target. These Islamists lack every form of dignity, honor, nobility, pride and principle. Our President, instead of destroying them with nuclear bombs like Hiroshima and Nagasaki, took the noble action of trying to civilize their backward society by installing a cultured democratic government. Instead of locking up Arabs in camps like my grandparents, our President endeavors to ensure that they are treated with the very dignity in which they are completely devoid. And yet people have the audacity to say our President is warlike. How can they be so blind? This attack was far worse than Pearl Harbor. It was unprovoked. They attacked a civilian target, killing innocent woman and children. What were we supposed to do? Nothing?”

From what I am reading, it may take a Great Chastisement by God before people will respect life. I can understand God’s anger and wrath, we are degrading to a point in which even Roman Catholics are placing personal worldly interests over the massacre of innocent lives. That is why: “the good will perish along with the evil, Priests and the sinners alike.” Our lack of concern for the unborn warrants it. If the Great Chastisement is worse than the Great Flood, as we learned from Sister Agnes, you could probably count the survivors on one hand. Chances are that none will be an abortion doctor.

God Bless

Hi Glowworm57,

The Government? Our Liberal Governor (NY) was using it for $5,000 per hookers. Now it looks like his Liberal default replacement was using it for coke. Our former Liberal President was chasing young interns around the Oval Office with cigars. Any help for the poor from that party is only a charade.

God Bless

First I would like to say, I don’t like to argue about politics, or religion, but then I will say, our present administration had no proof that Hussein was involved in the Twin Towers attack. Yes, he was an evil man and I don’t have any sympathy for him, but, our present President DID NOT have enough evidence to attack Iraq. He had he opportunity to find another solution when he was presented with the so called facts by his cronies regarding the Iraqi regime and its involvement with 9/11. He questioned Tenet, Cheney and the rest, “Is this all the proof we have?” And then Tenet said the lines that will go down in infamy, “It’s a slam dunk”. Then the Pres.followed the group. I hold him responsible for what has happened to our soldiers and Iraqi civilians in Iraq no matter how many fingers he points in no matter how many directions. He is not a person of honor. He has placed us in a quagmire and we are stuck. I can see invading Afghanistan, there were terrorist camps there and they needed to be destroyedl, but the job in Afghanistan wasn’t finished before we were up and armed attacking Iraq. One war at a time please. And yes, the chatisement is on its way.

Exactly!

Voluntary, personal charity benefits two people. It benefits the receiver, but it benefits the giver even more – because he receives grace and merit.

But who benefits from forced taxation? There seem to be those who think that if they advocate forcibly taking someone else’s money for charity, by that advocacy (and not by giving personally) they gain that grace and merit.

This is not rocket science folks, nor do you need an advance degree in theology to understand that Obama/Clinton are FOR ABORTION at ALL stages of pregnancy and PARTIAL BIRTH ABORTION and will choose Supreme Court Justices who wil gaurantee abortion on demand - forever. John McCain has a 99% prolife voting record, that he was wrong on embryonic stem cell research is true, but he will choose Supreme Court Justices similar to Roberts, Alito, Thomas and Scalia. Babies in the womb HAVE NO CHANCE with OBAMA -CLINTON. They have a fighting chance with JOHN MCCAIN. Babies in the womb HAVE NO CHANCE with a write-in candidate who doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in Hades to win the presidency and they HAVE NO CHANCE if you sit at home and brood because no candidate met your expectation rather than voting for the candiate who CAN win and WHO will protect the life of the unborn in nearly every instance. You have a DUTY as a Catholic to vote for the candidate who can best protect the rights of the unborn, if you don’t go to confession.

I think McCain voted for federal funding embryonic stem cell research… but enough said about that.

Dang Mford is http://bestsmileys.com/shooting1/8.gif some of y’all. LOL.

Well, we liberals do support*** choice***.
Oh…I just can’t let this one go by…Talk about a target.

Really…Puhleeze.

Do liberals support my right to choose to bear arms if I so desire?
Do liberals support my right to choose to smoke if I so desire?
Do liberals support my right to do with my property as I so desire?

Property, smoking, and gun rights are just three rights that I can come up with in one minute that are being curtailed by the liberal agenda. Others are certainly welcome to come up with more.

Only one party is consistently “pro-choice” and that would be the Libertarian party. And I find it interesting that there is a pro-life faction within the Libertarian party (see Ron Paul). Some libertarians (who are the true pro-choicers out there philosophically) acknowledge that the defense of human life supercedes our rights of choice.

Note: I see this might have been an old post I was responding to. Sorry. But I’ll let this one stand. The idea that “choice” belongs to liberalism is just too wrong to let pass.

Anyway…carry on.

Not with smoking… do not do it next to me okay.
Not with bearing arms… do not shoot me.
Liberals have little desire to expropriate property.
