Zerinus, do a Google search of “latae sententiae”, then continue the discussion. You are misunderstanding the whole point of it. The most prominent example of latae sententiae excommunication is abortion. If you do that search, you will see it upheld that a Catholic that receives an abortion is “automatically excommunicated”. Similarly, a Catholic that believes heretical doctrines, such as the Father having a body of flesh and bones, would also be “automatically excommunicated”. That is what excommunication latae sententiae means. I have already cited the Canon Law that defines what a heretic is, what an apostate is, etc. I don’t have to declare why me anything, the Canon Law defines it. So please, try again. You may not agree with it, but this is standard Catholic doctrine, on excommunication latae sententiae.

"In the Canon Law of the Catholic Church, the term latae sententiae refers to a penalty that is incurred automatically without the need for a Bishop or other Church superior explicitely declaring it.

The latae sententiae penalty is always connected to a specific offence, so if someone commits such an offense, he/she is automatically subjected to the penalty, providing the general conditions of being punishable are met (such as age, free will, etc).

Only those penalties are latae sententiae that Canon Law expressly declares as such. All others are ferendae sententiae and do not apply until a Church authority officially proclaims them." (which is what you keep referring to, and which I am not even talking about).

From the Catholic Encyclopedia:
**
“The spiritual penalties are of two kinds: latae and ferendae sententiae. The former are incurred by the mere fact of heresy**, no judicial sentence being required; the latter are inflicted after trial by an ecclesiastical court, or by a bishop acting ex informata conscientia, that is, on his own certain knowledge, and dispensing with the usual procedure”
**
“On the contrary, excommunication is occult when the offence entailing it is known to no one or almost no one.”**

Clearly, you are wrong here. No one needs to be declared by an authority to be in heresy or apostasy to be declared excommunicated latae sententiae. They are excommunicated by the simple fact of what they have done. It is clear what joining a false (in the Church’s view) church is. It doesn’t need to be explicitly stated.

Again, read before commenting on this.
You still do not understand. The Canon Law (or any other law) can only define what an act of heresy is. But it cannot establish if a particular individual has committed that act or not. That can only be done by a judge; and you are not that judge.

I suppose if you were someone good at acting and duplicity something like this might be possible. I can’t see why any person would want to try something like this though.
But the person in question is not acting in duplicity, as far as I can tell. He has made his status known to both churches.

It’s clear that you haven’t even read about this. Try doing a google search on this if you really care and want to speak knowledgeably on this subject. The simple act of the heresy or apostasy is automatic excommunication, even if “no one knows” (occult excommunication) according to the Catholic Encyclopedia. You keep replying “you are not that judge” as if to insert some sort of personal jab, which is too funny. One day you’ll actually read about this, and you’ll see that you have no idea what excommunication latae sententiae, or automatic excommunication, is about.

Sorry for butting in…Zerinus, these catholics are very patient, don’t go on clinging to this false notion that a procedure is necessary for someone to be an excommunicant. What Catholics have been trying to inform you of is that there are things that people do that demonstrate that they are already excommunicants. The act demonstrates the truth of things it isn’t the cause nor could any procedure cause someone to be a heretic.
Ignore zerinus, he is trying to tell Catholics that he knows better about our beliefs and laws. He doesn’t get that acts of abortion or apostasy (by joining another religion) causes an immediate excommunication, without the need for someone to declare you excommunicated (hence “latae sententiae”). Someone does not need to declare you an apostate or heretic for this to occur.

If only he would actually read about this instead of trying to sound knowledgeable on it with no knowledge on it.

As in Mothra worship ?

More about Mothra here:
Rule of Life for a Child of Mothra:
Liturgical Paraphernalia:

Church of the First Cylon, anyone ? 😉 If Starbuck’s is named after a character in “Battlestar Galactica”, does that make Starbuck’s a house of worship ?

Gottle, LOL!!! If Mothra worship will lead Motholics back to the Mother church, and Marian theology, all for it. 😃 They can syncrete all they want, but they only have to get back to the beginning, which is the end. 😛

What is amazing is that honesty is not always the best policy. I could have remained silent about my situation and just posted my posts. Life would have been more peaceful on this board.

Oh evil Catholic priest, just wants you to drink alcohol, just cause.??? Oh really it’s okay just have this drink, nothing wrong having a drink. Catholic priests just live to get others to drink alcohol, it’s their rasion de etre. Like whyme said every priest I’ve ever met have always urged me to drink. Cause that’s what they do???:mad::rolleyes::mad:
The priest in question is a friend of mine. I took no offense with what he said. I understood where he is coming from. In the catholic faith there is nothing wrong with having a glass of beer. But with my cultural mormonism I still would not drink a beer or any alcoholic drink. That was my point.

You think I’m hostile and I think you are lying to the people you present yourself to as a believing Catholic. I think by doing this you are disrespecting their belief. I would not present myself for Communion in an Orthodox Church out of respect for their belief why do you feel it’s okay to participate under false pretenses?
If I wasn’t born catholic, I wouldn’t take communion either. But I was born catholic and took communion many times as a child and as a teenager.

What is a believing catholic? The sisters around saint faustina treated her with unkindness and envy. And during the height of her illness they were uncharitable, unloving, mean, and uncaring. Were they believing catholics? In fact, during the last stages of her illness she was often left alone and in a prayer to jesus she called him her only friend. Were these sisters who celebrated daily mass, adorations, and prayers believing catholics? I don’t think so. But they received communion daily without a problem.

And so what is a believing catholic? Describe a believing catholiic.

Jesus didn’t have a ‘peaceful’ life. Why should you?😃
That is true. But what is strange is that on the mormon apologetic site all know that I have leanings toward the catholic faith and I experienced no problems. But here…with the ‘christians’ I have all sorts of problems. I see no love, kindness, understanding, charity, caring etc. And yet all these should be a part of every catholics life. Being a catholic is not just about dogma but about one’s actions. Many of the posters need to read mother teresa who showed her missionary work through love and not preaching or in judgementalism.

Why me, if you were Catholic, you’d respect the fact that you cannot take communion whilst in a state of mortal sin. To do so constitutes a sacrilige.

Do you attend mass every Sunday, out of curiousity?

PS- Just because there are a lot of bad Catholics who take communion in a state of mortal sin, that doesn’t give you an excuse to commit a sacrilige too.

But who gets to determine if he has committed that act or not? I don’t think it is you. If it is, then your decision must be wrong, because your church apparently disagrees with you, and I trust your church’s decision more than yours.

. . . acts of . . . apostasy (by joining another religion) causes an immediate excommunication, without the need for someone to declare you excommunicated . . .
Then you are at odds with your church, because your church apparently doesn’t think that he is, and I trust their decision more than yours.

It actually doesn’t disagree. And I think I’d trust in my Church and those Catholics that have interpreted her laws over a non-Catholic that isn’t even understanding it.

No one has to determine whether the act was committed or not. That is what excommunication latae sententiae means!!! Committing the act automatically confers the excommunication in this situation. If you would actual look this up, you would see that those that have abortions are automatically excommunicated, and there is no need to have someone determine whether the abortion actually happened or not, and declare that person excommunicated. Sorry, I trust my Church’s views on this, which I have repeatedly stated, more than your lack of knowledge on this subject.

Then you are at odds with your church, because your church apparently doesn’t think that he is, and I trust their decision more than yours.
Actually the Church does. Similarly, a person that gets an abortion is automatically excommunicated. Try and look up occult excommunication. The act of heresy or apostasy doesn’t need to be known by anyone or determined by anyone for latae sententiae excommunication to occur. I trust Catholics that write on this subject over your non-Catholic false view of it.

**
The phrase “latae sententiae” means a judgment or sentence which has already been brought, in other words, a sentence or judgment which does not need a future additional judgment from someone in authority; it refers to a type of excommunication which is automatic. Such a sentence of excommunication is incurred “by the very commission of the offense,” (CCC 2272*) and does not require the future particular judgment of a case by competent authority*. **

You are doing okay as far as I am concerned, whichever church you decide to support, as long as you do so with fairness and reason, which I think you are doing.

cumecclesia.blogspot.com/2009/03/latae-sententiae-excommunication.html

Thirdly, and most importantly, there is a point that might have been lost in translation or in the rush to make political capital out of the story: In saying that “the church was excommunicating all those responsible for the abortion: the medical team and the girl’s mother… The adults who approved, who carried out this abortion, will be excommunicated”, the archbishop may simply have been pointing out that anyone who procurs or cooperates in the procurement of an abortion is automatically (ie. latae sententiae) excommunicated. An explicit act of the Church is not required for such an excommunication to come into effect.

Sorry zerinus, but your false view of latae sententiae excommunication is not supported by the Catholic Encyclopedia and my fellow Catholics, and I trust those opinions more than yours.
