if so, how would you accomplish this?

I believe NO.
The reason that you cannot be both a mormon and a catholic is because mormons believe that the catholic church broke the covanent after Christ placed it on Peter. Mormons believe that the catholic church is “still trying to continue to administrate the kingdom” even though Christ has stopped putting his holy spirit to guide it and allow it to have authority to what what goes and what doesn’t.

Therefore how can one person be mormon and catholic if apparently the catholicS were so heretical that Christ abandoned them and instead placed his authority in Joseph Smith (BTW; a fictional character)?

All religions are cults, by definition, PJM.

I just happen to have the Oxford English Dictionary up, for an answer to another post.

Cult: Worship; reverential homage rendered to a divine being or beings.

If you are going to throw gratuitous insults around, it might be a good idea to look up the meaning of the words you use.
A cult is a group of followers to a belief that really just strayed from an original religion and just went about making up thier own rules. Cult; a group of followers of a religion that they made up.

No one can be both a Mormon and a Catholic!

That is like being a Muslim and a Christian at the same time! The two are against each other…

oh, gee, Zundrah…

I got my definition from the Oxford English dictionary and Mirriam-Webster. Would you care to share where your definition came from, and why yours trumps theirs?

Zundrah,
You went to public school, right?

Personally, I think it rather absurd to suggest that Mormons, as a group, are “evil gossipers” more than the common run of humanity.

What kind of research or “experience” could so vast a judgment possibly be based upon? Are you talking about Western American Mormons only? Do you include Eastern American Mormons? Does it apply to Mexican Mormons? Canadian Mormons? Nigerian Mormons? Brazilian Mormons? Japanese Mormons? Russian Mormons? Taiwanese Mormons? Male and female Mormons equally? Young and old Mormons? Poor Mormons and wealthy Mormons? New converts to Mormonism as well as multi-generational Mormons?

Can we examine your data?

By what mechanism does the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teach its members to gossip “evilly”? Does it offer courses? Material inducements? Why does it do so?

For an examination of the term cult and whether or not it applies to Mormonism, see

***No and be grateful. LDS and JW’s are CULTS not religions:thumbsup:

Love and prayers***
Every time I see the term ‘cult’ being used in this fashion I cringe in horror just thinking how a perfectly good sociological term was hijacked by Evangelicals and used indiscriminately for religious apologetic reasons rendering the term (in a sociological framework) completely meaningless!

I just learned a few weeks ago that the general consensus in the social sciences is that real ‘cults’ (which Mormonism once was in America) are now called “New Religious Movements”. The really odd thing is due to the term ‘cult’ being hijacked, social scientists are now forced to call religious groups that are atypical for the respective geographic setting “New Religious Movements” regardless of the age of the religion itself!!! This means we now are calling Zoroastrian communities in America “New Religious Movements” even though Zoroastrianism itself predates Judaism.

But I guess I shouldn’t complain. Language does evolve after all, even if at times abruptly.

In any case, I digress…

WhyMe:

I understand that you’re awfully busy in this thread considering that you are the subject of it, so maybe you missed my earlier question posed twice:

I’d like to know how you reconcile the competing claims of authority of the Catholic and LDS churches. In your opinion, who is St. Peter’s lawful successor? Thomas S. Monson or Joseph Ratzinger?

Here is the defination of “religion”

The moral virtue by which a person is disposed to render to God the worship and service he desrves*. It is sometimes identified with the virtue of justice toward God, whose rights are rooted in his complete dominion over all creation. Religion is also a composite of all the virtues that arise from a human being’s relationship to God as the author of his or her being, even as love is a cluster of all the virtues arising from human response to God as the destiny of his or her being. Religion thus corresponds to the practice of piety toward God as Creator of the universe. (Etym. probably Latin religare, to tie , fasten, bind, or relegere, to gather up, treat with care**

Indeed your defination is true without in this case being correct.

Cult: Worship; reverential homage rendered to a divine being or beings.

They do not accept God as Creator, Jesus as God, God as Triune, accept the Bible Catholic or KJV in entirety, do not believe in heave or hell and the list goes on. There idea of diety or dieties is far different than those of a Christian God.

***Sorry if I hit a nerve.😦

Love and prayers,***

Christ gave to Peter the power to bind and release, but your LDS church teaches that that never happened right? …or that he dropped the keys while walking one evening, so Joseph Smith just decided to pick them up?

Actually, you are misrepresenting “their’ beliefs quite completely. Since I am one of ‘them,’ I would know that. We most certainly DO 'accept God as Creator,” and “Jesus as God” (He is the second member of the Godhead). True, we are not trinitarians in the way that Catholics claim to be, but we most certainly 'accept the Bible…in entirety" (though you are going to have to explain that one). We most certainly believe in heaven and hell, both.

All that said, I am confused. Don’t you worship a divine Being? Is there something horrific about doing that?

Not to mention, I am confused about your introduction of the definition of 'religion." How does your misrepresentation of our beliefs prove that we aren’t a religion?

Is there some rule that says that if a belief system doesn’t agree with you, it’s not only not Christian, but not even a religion?

May I ask what your native language is?

Zundrah, you are changing the subject. We already know you don’t like Mormonism or agree with it. The topic is a word definition and why you think yours should trump that of every English Dictionary on the web and in the library.

How about doing something refreshing? How about simply learning something new, saying thank you, and then NOT slapping the person who taught you?

It’s a thought.

The topic is;
WhyMe and others: Can you Be Catholic and LDS at the same time?
The answer is; Christ gave to Peter the power to bind and release, but the LDS church teaches peter lost that authority and there fore the catholic church has lost its authority to baptize, teach and even stand.

So no, I wasn’t off topic, and no, you cannot be mormon and Catholic at the same time.

The specific subtopic was your claim about what the word ‘cult’ meant. I corrected you, and you came back with an insulting comment, as if your opinion of Mormonism made your definition correct. It does not.

As for the thread topic, on that I think you are correct. You can’t be a true believing Catholic and a true believing Mormon at the same time. I suppose that legally you can be both, however…you are a Mormon as long as your baptism is still valid, on paper, at least. The Catholics, too, have a similar belief. “Once a Catholic, always a Catholic” in that if a lapsed Catholic becomes Mormon, and then comes back to the Catholic faith, he doesn’t have to be rebaptized.

We do share many beliefs and cultural expectations. Even some fairly fundamental ones. However, you do have to, finally, choose one or the other. Trying to be both is, in reality, being neither.

Now.

How about taking another look at your own vocabulary and prejudices, Zundrah? Criticizing other beliefs and slamming them with gratuitous and incorrect insults doesn’t make you look faithful, just…dumb.

***Friend either your brand of Mormonism is unique or they have made whosale Theolgical changes of common belief:shrug:

Please share with me your faiths understanding of Jesus. And do you use the entire Catholic and or KJV, or your “New World Testament” bible. If the KJV for something other to try to disprove Christianity, what then is the “Book of Mormon?” And what is your churchs understanding of heaven and hell? ***

Love and prayers, and can we please play nice:rolleyes:

Diana I know we disagree on a many things and even agree  with many others but I can not sufficiently impart how happy I am for you that you believe the above! 👍
