I said nothing of teaching “tolerance,” which means saying that someone doing something you do not agree with is alright. Though I do think respect for the people around you and for the fact that they may have different beliefs/make different choices than you do is important so that all students can feel like it’s a supportive learning environment. Standing up for ANY kid who gets picked on has been a priority of mine in child care/teaching situations in the past, and I don’t see why I would ever change that. Students can’t learn if they feel the school environment is hostile.

And what if the child chooses not to share because they believe that their property is theirs? Our school has changed the concept of sharing from a noble voluntary act to a school mandated pooling of property . We have bought decent clothing and school supplies for our children and I have told them that they were under no obligation to share them. Further they were forbidden from giving their (our) property away without my permission. But still the schools try to cooerce them into giving up their personal property.

"Standing up for ANY kid who gets picked on has been a priority of mine in child care/teaching situations in the past, and I don’t see why I would ever change that. Students can’t learn if they feel the school environment is hostile.’’

As a school teacher, it is also a priority of mine. Nobody is disputing the fact that students can’t learn in a hostile environment and that no child should be bullied. It does not follow, however, and is not logical to suggest that the only way a nurturing environment can be achieved is by having a sexually-oriented (Yes, I said sexually-oriented) club on campus.

All schools (and all parents) indoctrinate. Indoctrination is not always bad. Schools indoctrinate children to: be able to sit still for a while (important life skill), share (important life skill), wait their turn in conversation (imporant life skill), not be reckless with school property (important life skill). It’s the hidden curriculum and it’s not all bad.
Thank you so much for proving my point. Teachers as a whole cannot be trusted. While I have a friend who is a teacher, and her I trust, you certainly demonstrate that teachers as a whole, cannot be trusted with our children.

Thank you for clearing this up.

By the way, the rate of sex abuse by public school teachers is about 10 times the rate of priest sex abuse. The only difference is that people can sue the Church because of discriminatory laws.

Have a problem with public schools? Don’t send your children there.

PS: For a poster whom I have seen repeatedly call people “dishonest” in their posting, it’s a little silly of you not to expect me to ask to see proof of your “sex abuse” allegations.

According to the Christian tradition all sex outside of marriage is sinful, and gay sex is sinful as well. Setting up this club would be like having a club for heterosexual students who engage in premarital sex. Or it would be like the city setting up a club for those who commit adultery, a club where city adulterers are loved and accepted.

Gay/Bisexual Conversation w/12 yr old

Okay. So I am stunned and need your feed back! My Dd is 12, as some of you may know. So she came home from school yesterday and told me that a little girl in one of her classes approached her in front of everyone in her clas and said…do you want to go out with me? Dd said did not catch on to this and said go out with you to where? And this little girl said…no, do you want to go out with me? Then dd said that she realized what this little girl was asking her. She said she felt her face get red and felt so uncomfortable and she responded…no, I don’t go out with girls. And that at that moment the kids in the classroom started laughing at this little girl. DD said that at break she went up to this little girl and said I am sorry if I made you feel bad but I don’t date girls. I don’t like girls like that. Girls are my friends only. Dd explained again how uncomfortable she felt and told me this little girl is always starring at her. And she doesn’t know what to do. I told her to never be disrespectful to anyone. That even if you’re gay or bisexual you deserve respect because you are a humanbeing. I told her if this girl makes her uncomfortable just to try to avoid being around her but not to ever be rude. I also explained to her that even if other kids are making fun of this little girl for being openly gay that she should never participate in making fun at her because no one deserves that treatment gay or not. I am just so shaken by this whole experience and what our kids are being exposed to! I was so shocked. I just hope that I am guiding my daughter in the right path. Life can be so challenging with all these things that our kids are being thrown at every day! I mean is this crazy or what? I ask myself did I say or do the right thing to my dd? I mean what do you say to a 12 year old when they are approached by something like this? I don’t want to mistreat people that are gay and I don’t hate them but then at the same time I don’t like the diea that this stuff this is being shoved down their throats nowadays!! Then of course the topic of gay marriages came up in our conversation (since it was recently legalized in Ca) and I explained to dd that God made marriage to be between a man a woman but that we are no one to judge and that the only one to judge is God. It’s like I want to explain to her our beliefs but at the same time without sounding like I’m discriminating. It’s just so hard. This really makes me confused and sad. I almost feel like dd’s innocence is being taken away with all these things that are out there nowadays! Help! How else can I explain to dd these things? Help!

Thanks in advance for your advice and (name removed by moderator)ut.

Blessings

Jesus, Mary, I love you, Save Souls.

Not sure what to think. My wife is a high school teacher at the local public high school, she is popular with the students, but still strict with her students.

A student wants to start up a Gay-Lesbian-Straight club at the school. All clubs need a teacher sponsor who oversees the activities of the club to make sure they stay within the guidelines of school conduct.

I think the club is being set up to focus on “tolerance” which I believe is something that our social justice teachings would agree with. I do not think it is being set up to promote the G-L agenda, but I’m sure it could steer that way.

Thoughts? She has not committed.
I haven’t read the whole thread…what did your wife decide? If it were me, I would have politely declined. Better to stay out of such issues in a work/school setting.

Oddly enough, I am more against the homosexual agenda than anyone and take the view of public schools as social experimentation labs to be avoided, but I’m actually against school vouchers. That is, any money taken from Caesar will eventually come with strings. So they get us dependent on vouchers and later decide, “Hey! Where’s your comprehensive sex-ed program?(likely put together by a panel including Planned Parenthood members) Implement it now or we’ll pull the plug on your vouchers!”

I’m all for breaking the stranglehold of educational romanticism on public schools, but I’m not so sure vouchers are the way to do it.

See: The age of educational romanticism: On requiring every child to be above average
Educational romanticism characterizes reformers of both Left and Right, though in different ways. Educational romantics of the Left focus on race, class, and gender. It is children of color, children of poor parents, and girls whose performance is artificially depressed, and their academic achievement will blossom as soon as they are liberated from the racism, classism, and sexism embedded in American education. Those of the Right see public education as an ineffectual monopoly, and think that educational achievement will blossom when school choice liberates children from politically correct curricula and obdurate teachers’ unions
.

This is an interesting topic worth starting a thread on. It is difficult though to deal will with two different topics on the same thread.

Move to another country?
Are simply push for a school voucher system. That we you support publically funded education without supporting public schools any more than other, more godly, alternatives.

Vouchers just make racial inequality in education worse, because the poorest students tend to be students of color, and they will be left in schools that are even more underfunded and undesirable as other families take funds that would be used to run existing schools.

It is for the poor that I wish we could make a way for them to have a choice. Why should only those that can pay school taxes and pay school tuition be allowed a choice of school that avoids mixing immorality with scholastics? I wouldn’t even mind having having it graduated to help the poor. Race should not even enter the picture. I do not support racism.

So we get equality by making sure everybody gets an equally poor education?

Or we work to make the current system better so it serves everyone and gives everyone as good an education as it gave my siblings (I attended Catholic high school, but they attend the fabulous local public school)

A gay lesbian straight club is going to go much farther than teaching tolerance. It is going to strive to present homosexual behavior as acceptable. Given that how could a Catholic possibly sponsor such a group?
Ditto… I’d steer clear of this little opportunity.
