no true Scotsman fallacy

With regard to Elvisman’s response to me, as for your experiences, fair enough, but what’s to say they weren’t simply internal psychological reactions to perceived reality? There’s probably far more Christians who have prayed their butts off for dying loved ones, who ultimately lost their loved one (due to illness), so is it that they weren’t true Christians, or did God not love them as much as he loves you, or is the most logical answer, your dad probably wouldn’t have died anyway?

Does god always grant you exactly what you ask? If so you’d be the first (in my experience); and I’d think you weren’t being honest to boot. The fact is the way Christians validate prayer is a way that really gives us no evidence at all.

You pray, the thing you prayed for didn’t happen, but rather something else happened. You say, this is how god answered my prayers. Fine, but in all probability – had you not prayed – the same thing would have happened. In other words these type of soft claims prove nothing. Sometimes your prayers may be answered. Well, if you pray enough, occassionally (statistically speaking) something you want to happen will follow. Then you celebrate, god gave me exactly what I hoped for, what a great god?

In truth, in all probability, that thing would have happened anyway. I don’t pray, my life is still OK 🤷
My father DID die, 12 years later. As we prayed with him, he died in peace with a slight smile on his face.

What we were praying for 12 years earlir was that God** heal**** is gangrenous foot from being amputated.**
The doctor told us the healing process – if any – would take several weeks to several months.

That same doctor was stunned beyond belief, when the next morning he unwrapped the foot to take a look and put on a new dressing – only to find that the foot was almost completely healed.

There is no logical or scientific explanation for this – only the fervent prayers of his children and grandchildren.****

If you don’t believe in God - that’s something you’ll have to reconcile.
As for me - there is NO doubt.

Ok Bill I don’t know what you are talking about. Once again I never wrote the names down so how can you ask a question that my Bible doesn’t say the same thing yours says if I never wrote the names down in any post. It was elvisman that wrote the names down in post 333 in post 338 I responded to elvisman and I did not write down any of the names.
What is it that you want me to see in Matthew 10:2???
My Bible says the exact same thing yours says.
Its not a big think but My Bible say Apostle it not somthing you need to get a bee under your hat about, sorry I was not trying to upset and one,and the word Bishop I was just asking to see how you get the authority to use the word

You just don’t get it.
The Apostles were Disciples until Jesus ascended into heaven and were STILL learning up until Jesus Ascended into heaven.
Acts 1:1-2
** explicitly says:** “In the first book, Theophilus, I dealt with all that Jesus did and taught until the day he was taken up,** after giving instructions through the holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen****.“**

It wasn’t until Pentecost that they were able go out and boldly proclaim the gospel.
**In **post #329 you erroneously claimed that they were NOT Apostles before the Last Supper. You are WRONG and I have supplied you with ample Scriptural proof of this.

You just can’t seem to grasp the fact that even though they were Apostles early on – they were STILL disciples of Jesus. It’s not a case of either/or – it’s BOTH.

PS – Luke 6:5 was a typo. It’s Luke 6:13.
They were not Apostles at the last supper. In the Bible they are called disciples. They were disciples until Jesus sent them out to teach others like in Mark 6:30, Luke 9:10, Luke 17:5 that you gave me as proof they were apostles. You have been saying all along that they were apostles and now you say they weren’t apostles until the resurrection of Jesus. Which is it were they before or after the resurrection. Here in this post you say 2 different things. 1. you say that they were apostles at the last supper.and 2. you say they weren’t apostles until Jesus assended to heaven. As far a the apostles early on look at the 3 gosples above and what I wrote. It just confirms what you said about the apostles early on.

Matthew 101-2 "Jesus called his 12 disciples to him and gave them authority to cast out evil spirits and to heal every kind of disease and illness. Here are the names of the 12 apostles
first Simon {also called Peter}
then Andrew {Peters brother}
James {son of Zebedee}
John {Jame’s brother
Philip
Bartholomew
Thomas
Matthew {the tax collector}
James {son of Alphaeus}
Thaddaeus
Simon {the Zealot}
Judas Iscariot {who later betrayed him}

As far as the Bishop goes you know its not by the authority of the Catholic church and if its not from them according to the Catholics it don’t count. So why bother to ask.

Are you for real?**
Do you have the ability to carry on an** intelligent**** conversation because if you don’t – I apologize for assuming that you did.**

YOU** are the one who says they were not apostles until AFTER the Last Supper.**
**I have PROVEN to you that they were called Apostles WAY before this. Read my post ****#338 **where I slammed you with no less than SIX verses that prove my point (Matt. 10:2, Mark 3:14, Mark 6:30, Luke 6:13, Luke 9:10, Luke 17:5).

No read very slowly*** so you’ll understand what I’ve been telling you:

The 12 were called “Apostles” very early on in the Scriptures. They were ALSO disciples up until the Ascension because Jesus was still instructing them.
As a matter of fact, they were receiving revelations beyond the Ascension and could be considered disciples after that.
They were BOTH Disciples AND Apostles.
Like I tried to tell you earlier – it’s not EITHER/OR – it’s BOTH.

Is that clear enough for you?

And there are MANY protestants who are better Christians
than MANY Catholics that is for sure!

How could you possibly know that for sure?

Most, if not all Catholics, pick and choose and manipulate the
CC system to get what they want.

The Reformation was based on that

:o
PS the Catholic Church HAS changed its doctrine.
They used to say people could not eat meat on Friday any Friday of the year.
Now they dont. Except for lenten fridays.
They used to say you couldn’t get divorced…gee, there are a TON of divorced catholics.
and REMARRIED catholics.
The catholic church is on unsteady ground, that is for sure.
and i WILL be leaving.
the mentality of the answers I received on here just cements my decision!
👍
Please research the faith. There are doctrines and disciplines. There is a difference. Not all Catholics understand their faith. Friday pennace was never revoked, it was just left to the individual to choose the type of pennace rather than assigning it to them. Do you know why we do pennance on Fridays? I do abstain from meat and I have actually informed Catholics and non Catholics of the meaning behind it just because I do abstain. It has worked as a way to evangelize.
You are right lots of Catholics are divorced, again many do not understand their faith. You seem to be one of them, so you will leave rather than find out what the Church has to offer you. You are free to do so.

Ok now if you look at Matthew 10:2 what do you see. Jesus called his 12 disciples (learners) and gave them authority to cast out evil spirits and to heal every kind of disease and illness. And here are the names of the 12 apostles (teachers) Now when Jesus sent out the 12 disciples, who are learners at this point, to go to the lost sheep. To go and announce to them the Kingdom of Heaven is near, at this point when Jesus sent them out, they then became apostiles, which are teachers.
Once again
disciple:learner
apostle:teacher

In order to know what Jesus was doing in Mark 3:14 you must first look at Mark 3:7 through16. Here Jesus picked he 12 disciples from the vast crowd. Now if you notice that in 13 it says “Afterward Jesus went up on a mountain and called the ones he wanted to go with him. And they came to him.” Now Jesus at this point called many disciples (learners) to go with him up the mountain. Then in 14 it says “Then he selected 12 of them to be his regular companions, calling them apostles. He sent them out to preach.”
(teachers) Now if you notice before he sent them out they were called disciples the when he sent them to preach they were calle apostles.

Mark 6:30 If you notice the words in this verse, it says they gathered around Jesus and reported all the had done and taught. They taught, teachers that are apostles.

Luke 6:5 says “And Jesus added, I, the Son of Man, am master even of the Sabbath.”
Where did you get your Luke 6:5 from.

Luke 9:10 same explaination as Mark 6:30.

Luke 17:5 is talking about faith not about learning or teaching. It says we need more faith. See although they were apostles (teachers) they did not have the faith necessary for such radical forgiveness.

In order to understand you need to read a few verses before and a few verses after the one you stress to get the whole picture of what is going on and what the meaning is.

Sorry brother but you are wrong and need to study more and understand more about Scriptuer.
Here is post 338 now tell me where I said they weren’t apostiles.

Mark 6:30 I said the were apostles. “The apostles returned to Jesus from their ministry…” They were teaching.

Luke 6:5 typo on your part.

Luke 9:10 I said the same as Mark 6:30 the were apostles.“When the apostles returned. the told Jesus everything the had done.” They were teaching.

Luke 17:5 talking about faith I said they were apostles. “One day the apostles said the the Lord. We need more faith, tell us how to get it.” Notice the word apostles.

Matthew 10:2 I said they were both disciples and apostles. “Jesus called his 12 disciples to him and gave them authority to cast out evil spirits and to heal every kind of disease and illness. Here are the names of the 12 apostles.”

Mark 3:14 I said they were apostles."Then he selected 12 of them to be his regularl companions, calling them apostles. He sent them out to preach. teachers.
Now what part did I not agree with you on.
Why are you having a hard time comprehending that someone agreed with you. Can’t you see that. Didn’t I say the were apostles. Calm down and read it.

Are you for real?**
Do you have the ability to carry on an** intelligent**** conversation because if you don’t – I apologize for assuming that you did**.

Read what I said. I said they were not apostles at the last supper. The bible called them disciples. Matthew 26:20 “When it was evening, Jesus sat down at the table with the 12 disciples.” See the word disciples and read the first line notice the words not apostles AT the last supper.
Now I said that they were disciples until Jesus sent them out to teach. Notice the words until Jesus sent them out to teach. I have even given you proof of that. Mark 6:30, Luke 9:10 and Luke 17:5 saying they were apostles.
As far as proving your point. I agreed with you otherwise I wouldn’t have given you Mark 6:30 Luke 9:10 and Luke 17:5.
The 12 apostles…I agreed with you.
Now read very slowl*y so you will understand that I ageed with you except the defination of a disciple and apostle. That is what started the crud, a defination
disciples, learner
apostle, teacher
The 12 both
IS THAT CLEAR ENOUGH FOR YOU???

You are correct in observing that there would also likely be a problem with the indivdual, and not just that church. I thought I had implied that in my post, but maybe I intended to and did not do a great job. I would say that it takes two to tangle, and that it is likely that both would have to share blame when an individua leaves a Church.
That is true and those responsible for scandal and for error will certainly be held accountable for it by God.

At the same time, I think of those who inspite of the scandal, abuse, corruption have remained faithful to the Church. These are the men and women who saw passed the much and recognized in the Church her divine institution.

I think of St Thomas Moore who from what I have read was critical of the conduct of the Church heirarchy at the time and yet he died for his faith. He was able to discern between conduct and doctrine and realized that what Henry XVIII was proposing is a serious error in doctrine.

I don’t believe I questioned that or even brought it up. Now all this Disciple stuff came from elvisman post. He said and I quote, The Disciples didn’t become Apostles there were 12 Apostles plus a few more…then he names 3 of them. I was showing elvisman that they were not Apostles from the beginning. The were Disciples first.
I think what Elvis is trying to explain here is that the term disciples apply to everyone who followed Jesus. The term disciple derives from the latin word fo pupil. There were many who were sort of learning from Jesus but Jesus specifically picks 12. Only these twelve are Jesus’s Apostles. When the mission to make disciples of all men was made, this mission was given to the twelve, to the apostles. At the last supper there was only the twelve. When he gave them the authority to forgive sins, it was just the twelve. But at Pentecost it was not just the twelve.

Hi, Hisalone,

Sorry for joining late…🙂 Ah, but, it is good to see you haven’t changed much since I last read one of your posts… 😃
Now your theology is as bad as Elvis’ 😉

Christs body is His Church which is made up of all who believe in Him. That is interesting… Did you know that Christ’s Body (Blood, Human Soul and Divinity, too) are present in the Eucharist. If you go to John 6 you can find out how Christ feed the 5,000 and then a little later stated that if you do not eat His Flesh and drink His Blood, you have no life in you. For someone interested in going to Hell - those are Words to ponder deeply in your heart.

What are the gates of hell? Glad you asked. This is really poetic language, where a part stands for the whole. This would be similar to getting the ‘keys’ to the car - you are actually getting the whole car. Hmmmm… that reminds me about another set of ‘keys’ found in Matt 16…😉 But that is another story. When the ‘Gates’ are identified, what is meant is all of hell - all of the deceit that the Devil can provide - (and judging from the butchered interpretations of Scripture, the Devils has been hard at work!) in additions to the various temptations of the flesh and the world. There is no way we could fight the Devil without the Grace of God. And, did you know that a superabundant source of God’s Grace comes from the Sacraments - given by the Catholic Church. These, you will find are outward signs, institutued by Christ, that give Grace. For someone concerned about going to Hell, having a ready source of God’s Special Sacramental Graces sounds like effective ammuntion in fighting off the Devil.

Christ is the truth and the light. It is so nice to find something we agree on, Hisalone,

Christ is the very presence of Jesus in and on and around His people. I am not really familiar with the distinction you appear to be making between “Christ” and “Jesus”. Would you kindly clarify that for me? As I understand it, “Jesus Christ” is True Man and the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity.

For centuries Roman Catholics have attempted to deny this truth to others that will not succumb to thier enslavement. Ah, Hisalone, did you know that this was the part in your post that caught my eye. You know, I am sure your bitterness knows no bounds - but, for almost 2000 years, the Catholic Church has preached that Jesus Christ is Lord, that Jesus Christ founded His Church on Peter - and carries on to this very day under Benedict XVI, that Jesus Christ died for our sins so we would not be slaves of the Devil, and that Jesus Christ is offering Himself Totally to us in the Eucharist. Now, if you considered being a bond slave to Christ (as Paul did) as something to avoid - then there will be little doubt that Hell looks like your final destination. Face it, we will either be ‘enslaved’ by Christ in His Chruch (and, that would be the Catholic Church) or the Devil. Take your pick. The choice really is yours - and both Heaven and Hell are examples of the use of Free Will.

God bless

Sorry but we will never agree. Have a good day.
I find this reply interesting. You say we will never agree. I am sure you feel the same way about the other’s posts, but you bother to at least post rebuttal.

How about we go 1 item at a time on what you disagree with?

I believe there is objective truth, i.e. truth that is not determined by our opinion. Somethng that we can established by rational thought processes.

So really, for earnest searchers of truth, “agree to disagree” is a cop out.

Hi, Bridgeforsale
there’s no such thing as hell, so the answer is emphatically NO!
That is a categorical statement. What do you base this on?

Remember, this is a discussion group, not a place where one plunks down one-liners and then leaves. In some circles, this is considered rude. Did you intend it this way?

God bless

Hi, Rev Kevin

I guess my age is catching up with me, Rev Kevin … but, I found the way you posted your remarks rather difficult to follow so that I could understand what it is you are saying. It has been my experience that when this happens a lot of mis-understanding get needlessly generated. And, no body wants that, eh? 👍
Wrong About what?

Who is Jesus, he is Christ. Who is Christ, he is Jesus. Christ: The Son of God, The Messiah, The Anointed One. I can’t argue with that. But, considering it is the Christmas Season, I would have added Christ was the Son of Mary…🙂

Never said the Bible was. Was what? And, as I look down… we have more of these really terse responses. While one-word of ultra brief responses are fine for some things - CAF is for dialogue. This is a place for people to share ideas. In my opinin, the method you have chosen to provide your answers actually hampers dialogue. Is this what you wanted?

Tell 'ya what … just answer the two questions I asked above and let me catch just what it is you are saying. Does that seem reasonable?

From a study Bible and the Catholic web sites.Where do you get yours?

Wrong
Matthew 26:20 When Jesus sat down at the table with hes 12 DISCIPLES …
Matthew 26:47 And even as he said this, Judas, one of the 12 DISCIPLES.
Matthew 26:19 So the DISCIPLES did as Jesus told them and prepared the Passover supper there.
Matthew 26:1 When Jesus had finished saying these things, he said to his DISCIPLES,…
Matther 28:18 Jesus came and told his DISCIPLES…
Mark 16:14 Still later he appeared the the 11 DISCIPLES…
Mark 6:30 The APOSTLES returned…{ Mark uses the word Apostles here and in 3:12. Apostle means “one sent” as messemger, authorized agent, or missionary. The word became an official title for Jesus’ 12 Disciples after his death and resurrection. Acts 1:25,26 Ephesians 2:20}

Wrong it says DISCIPLES

You need to read the Bible. Who are you to put words in his mouth and twist the meanings.
But I can see that you didn’t say anything about you questioning my faith. because you were wrong and I was right.

God bless

Hi, P101,

I thought I had lost track of you… 😃

You know… I have had a similar set of experiences…:),
Well, I wouldnt claim to know all the answers to questions about God; but what I do know of Him I have no problems with. When I pray; He has one of several answers - yes, no maybe or wait. What we call “unanswered prayer,” often is. We just don’t like the answer. But whatever His answer, He is always a great God!

Actually, P101, He is the Greatest!

God bless

Hi, P101,

Benedictus2 actually gives some of the best answers around … but, I looked and did not cathch where your question was answered… so, I thought I would pitch in…🙂
I have a general observation/question for posters in this topic, if I may? I understand before asking it that answers may vary, depending upon which denomination you are from. But it has ocurred to me that maybe we are missing something here? I would agree with that…😉

All of us would agree that there definitely is a hell; ahhhhhhh… apparently not. There is a poster who just identified - more like a news flash - there there was no hell! This caught me by surprise… and they did not say if they believed in heaven, either! So, the best I can come up with is that MOST OF US would agree on their being these two places for the eternal reward or punishment of the soul.

just as we would that heaven is real. While our various denominations would not agree on the specific nature of the two; we do agree that both exist. Right?

Now, obviously, God gives many warnings in Scripture re hell and hell fire. He doesn’t want us to end up there, right? Therefore, shouldn’t there be a way to determine if we will end up in one or the other? Actually, you will be delighted to know that there are several ways, P101. Here is a simple test - go to Matt 5:1-12 - the section where Christ taught the Beatitudes. Christ repeats the phrase, “Blessed are…” now, that would indicate that if you are doing these identified things, you will be rewarded in Heaven. This greatly simplifies things - because, you can not be doing these things and breaking the 10 Commandments at the same time… 🙂

Remember, I said this was a simple test - not an EASY one! As you probably guessed, it does not end there. For example:

Christ clearly says that Baptism is necessary for salvation - (John 3) - so are you baptized?

Christ clearly says that we are to confess our sins to the men He has appointed if we are to be forgiven - (John 20) - so do you confess your sins to a priest?

Christ clearly says we are to eat His Flesh and Drink His Blood if we are to have eternal life - (John 6) - so do you take the Eucharist as Christ commanded?

I think the key here is that if you do what Christ has told you do - and all of this is right there in your (abridged) Bible - then you should be rewarded with eternal life!

Does God leave us wondering all our lives? I really think these items I gave you will prove helpful. But, remember, we can do nothing without His Grace - and you know that God wills the salvation of all men.

Why do we have such a hard time figuring this out and having assurance of our salvation in Christ alone? But, you know, even doing all this does NOT give us an ASSURANCE! 👍 Paul tells that, “… we are work our salvation in fear and trembling” (Phili 2:12). And, while you are at it … take a look at Matt 25:2 - the parable of the five wise and five foolish virgins. I won’t boar you with the story … just the ending. Here are these five women pounding on the door to be let in with their newly oiled lamps. Notice, the Lord of the House does NOT say, “Well, you were pretty good girls …come on in!” No. Not even close. They were probably ‘pretty good girls’ but, for whatever reason - they blew it at the end! And, it cost them dearly.

To say only God knows if we will go to hell, is to say only He can know if we are going to heaven too. God is ALL KNOWING!

So where is the assurance of salvation if “we cannot know?” You know, Faith is not like a warranty card on your car! Just take a look at little children - they do not ask for ASSURANCE - they believe and are obedient. If we are to accept the Kingdom of God as a little child (Mark 10:13) then we will be following what Christ told us to do. Remember, little children lovinging run into the arms of their parents - they do not go “This is step 1 and this is stept 2…” it really is a process that they have incorporated into their selves. Now, go back to the beginning of the post - incorporate what I said previously and I think you will be on your way to accepting God’s Love in His Church (and, that would be the Church Christ founded on Peter).

Surely God is not into this kind of guessing game? Salvation by charades? You know, Calvin was plagued throughout his life with his misguided view of predestination. His is not the example to follow!

I am particularly looking forward to benedictus2’s answers and thoughts on this! 🙂 Well, you’re stuck with me…😉 I hope you find this helpful. Who knows, maybe Benedictus2 will visit … let’s hope she does not put a lump of coal in your stocking for your ‘charades’ comment!

God bless

Kevin - wake up and READ the Scriptures in CONTEXT:

Luke 22:14

(The Last Supper)
When the hour came, he took his place at table with the apostles
.

You keep saying that the Apostles weren’t present at the Last Supper.
WHY would you say that?
You’re DEAD wrong.
