I very much want to quit the catholic church and become an
Assembly of God member. Am i doomed for hell?

I don’t fit in with the CC, there is no enthusiasm there.
Friend,

Changing churches isn’t always the answer. Sometimes our “dry spells” are part of our growing process. Have you chosen to practice some Catholic devotional traditions? Do you pray the rosary or attend adoration?

One’s walk with God really has nothing to do with other people’s enthusiasm…“en theos”…“In God” is where the word comes from…perhaps instead of seeking an “outside” worship experience…you should turn inward and find that Divine Center where the Spirit of God indwells you.

Leaving a religious institution does not doom one to hell…no more than going to a different grocery store causes bankruptsy…loosing one’s Center and contact with the Eternal is a problem that is only solved when we turn back to that Center of our Being and rest within Him.

I don’t typically tell people of other Christian traditions to go to a new or different tradition…but practice that tradition they are familiar with gleen the gems of faith and wisdom that exist within their tradition.

Then, enlighten me.

In Matt, 16:18-15, Jesus calls Simon, KEPHA and that on this KEPHA he would build his Church. He goes on to give him the keys to the Kingdom and the power to forgive sins or hold them bound on Heaven and earth.
How do you interpret this?

What does Matt. 18:15-18 mean, if not Authority of the Church?
Here, he gives the Apostles the power to forgive sins or hold them bound on Heaven and earth.

In John 16:12-15, Jesus spoke ONLY to the Apostles - not to his disciples in general.
How do you interpret this?

In John 20:21-23, he appeared to the Apostles and gave them the power to forgive or retain sins - again - in heaven and on earth.
How do you interpret this?

ALL of these things were understood by the Early Church in the SAME way they are now but the grown up Church.

Acts 1:20-26 PROVES that this was to be passed onto their successors.
Matthew 16:15-18 talking to Peter, Jesus said “upon this rock I will build my church…” If you notice Jesus said “my church” see Jesus is the head and we are the body
Ephesians 1:23 says, “And the church is his, meaning Jesus, body…”
Colossians 1:18 says, “Christ is the head of the church…”
See Christ or Jesus is the church. That is what Jesus meant when he told Peter upon this rock I will build “my church.” That Jesus is the head and you are to spread and to build on the teachings that he, Jesus, tought them.

John 16:12-15 Jesus is not talking to Apostles he is talking to Disciples. If you keep reading to verse 17 it says, “The Disciples asked eachother…” Not the Apostles. They were still learning which is what a Disciple it and they were not yet teachers is what a Apostle is.

John 20:21-23 Once again you need to read from verse 19 where is says, "That evening. on the first day of the week. the “Disciples” were meeting behind locked doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders.
Jesus was giving the Disciples their Spirit-powered and Spirit-guided mission, to preach the Good News about Jesus so peopl’s sins might be forgiven. The Disciples did not have the power to forgive sins only God can forgive sins} but Jesus gave them the privilege of telling new believers that their sins have been forgiven because they have accepted Jesus’ message. All believers have this same privilege. We can announce forgiveness of sins with certainly when we orselves have found repentance and faith.

Acts 1:20-26 There were many who consistently followed Jesus throughtout his ministry of earth. The 12 Disciples were in his inner circle. but the others shared the Disciples’ deep love for and commitment to Jesus.
The Apostles ahd to choose a replacement for Judas. They outlined specific criteria for making the choice. When the “finalists” had been chosen. the apostles prayed. asking God to guide the selection process.
The Disciples became Apostles. Disciple means follower or learner, and Apostle means messenger or missionaary. These men now had the special assignment of spreading the Good News of Jesus’ death and resurrection.

No. It does not. There are many aspects of this scripture which the Catholic position fails to address. The focus you provided is so bent on the “authority” apriori that you totally miss the “keys.” The average Catholic I have discussed this with has no clue exactly what the Scriptures mean with their use of “keys” in this text. Plus, the claim you make of Jesus speaking “only to the disciples” does not have half the indication which you have appointed to it with your understanding of Catholic dogma.

All scripture is for all people all of the time, as in all ages. Jesus gives all believers the power to confess their sins and to be forgiven directly by Jesus. 1 John 1:9 But this privilege of confessing and being forgiven is not “the keys” spoken of by scripture.

I liked your use of Ephesians 1:23 here. It is exciting to see how Jesus is in control of His Church; even allowing us to be a part of the body; but nowhere does scripture give allowance for humans to be the head; Christ is both, and He invites us to be a part of the great BODY of believers. It would be/is a disaster whenever a human tries to lay claim to being the head! I really liked the context of Ephesians 1:23, and I thought it would be quite pertinent to enclose it in more detail:

Eph 1:16 Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers;
17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:
18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,
19 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,
20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,
21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:
22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,
23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.
[/quote]

No; because every Church out there makes the claim to fame on that count. It takes all Churches and denominations, including Catholics, to make up “the Church.”

Now who couldn’t predict here that someone wouldn’t try this? 😃 To the Catholic, Jesus is head of the Church, by proxy, through the Pope. That’s not something Scripture would support.

Those verses have important meaning, why criticise them? What do you want him to do quote the whole Bible just so you can’t accuse him with your proof text excuses? All you did here was to excuse/dismiss away God’s Word.

Now who couldn’t predict here that someone wouldn’t try this? 😃 To the Catholic, Jesus is head of the Church, by proxy, through the Pope. That’s not something Scripture would support.
No, Jesus is not the head of the Church by proxy through the Pope. The Bishop of Rome is the head of the college of bishops, and is the visible/earthly leader of the Church. The Church is the Body of Christ, and Jesus Christ is the head of the Church, the head of His own Body. He is not the head by proxy through the Pope (whatever that means).

No Bill I don’t just go from verse to verse. I do some research from various sources. Besides I’m responding to the verses that the Catholics have written trying to prove their point. If you would look at the other posts you will see this. Instead of asking me, ask them if they pick up a bible and go from verse to verse trying to prove their point. It sure seems like it when they have the name, chapter, and verse quoted. Is it alright for them to do that but not alright for us to do that. Come on Bill be fair on both sides. If you accuse one of doing it and not the others thats pretty one way to me if you ask me.
Look at posts 258 and 265 you will see that I’m responding to their verses they wrote from the bible. How do you respond to what is written I know its not from memory.

Since this objection (Jesus is head of the Church, by proxy, through the Pope)
has been clarified, that’s one hurdle less in understanding that the Church (now known as the Catholic Church) as the Church that Jesus founded.

Now who couldn’t predict here that someone wouldn’t try this? 😃 To the Catholic, Jesus is head of the Church, by proxy, through the Pope. That’s not something Scripture would support.
You phrased that wrongly. The Catholic Church says that Jesus is the head and the Pope is His Vicar. In John 21, Jesus gave Peter the charge of His sheep. If we belong to Jesus Christ’s sheepfol, then Jesus put Peter in charge of us. And the pope is Peter’s successor.

So really, to know whether you are part of Jesus’s sheepfold, you have to find out who is tending you. If you are not being tended by Peter and his successors, then you are probably part of another sheepfold. 😃

you’re using a book I think is ancient nonsense to prove the veracity of a concept I think is more ancient nonsense? Hmmm … any REAL evidence?

Nevertheless, I don’t want to derail this thread (there’s a few atheist threads in this forum, where I’m glad to reduce theistic arguments to absurdity).
No atheist has been able to reduce theistic arguments to absurdity. Smarter men than you have tried though. 🙂

Do not ever judge my belief in our Father Please. I don’t question your faith as a Catholic.
And where did I question your belief?
You have no idea how strong my faith is and just because I don’t see it the Catholic way don’t meand its not right and if you were taught the Catholic way so be it.
If there are two opposing beliefs, only one could be true. We can’t both be right. That is the point of this forums.
But I don’t believe your Catholic church or any church except Jesus who is the true church
Jesus never ever claimed He is the Church. He did however say He will build a church. That is why I said you ought to read your Bible better.
Sounds sorta stuck up to me but keep on believing what your church tell you to think, say, and do.
Not stuck. It is not stuck up to say what is true. A man with an IQ of 170 who claims he is intelligient is not being stuck up, merely stating a truth.
Same with the claim of the Church. The Catholic Church was born at Pentecost. Your church came probably 1600 plus years later.
And this is something you can verify if you read history.
They don’t want you to have a mind of your own.
Actually they do. That is why the Catholic Church can be said to be the founder of western civilization. She founded universities, painstakingly preserverd the Bible, was the instrument God used to write the Bible, set the canon of the Bible etc, etc.
And all this you can find out for yourself IF you are capable of thinking for yourself. 🙂
They don’t want you to because you might see things in a clear light or in a way that they don’t want you to see.
You ought to read the conversion stories of Scott and Kimberly Hahn and other protestants how have come home to the Church.

It was when they started STUDYING by themselves that they found out that the true Church is indeed the Catholic Church.

As a matter of fact it is the protestants (or at least some of them) who do not want you to find out the truth. That is why they spread lies about the Catholic Church and what she believes. The only reason they would lie is because they do not want you to find out the truth. Because if you do, then you would want to become Catholic too.
But at least I have a mindset to think on my own and not just think the way some church tells you to think.
If you really have a mind of your own then start reading. Start reading things other than what your fellow protestants feed you. Read Rome Sweet Home by Scott and Kimberly Hahn. Read Surprised by Truth. If you are not afraid for your longheld beliefs to be shaken, that is. 🙂

Well, I have been studying for 3 years with this web site and forum; and I don’t want to become Catholic at all. The “testimonies” you link to are subjective in nature; and are similar to many testimonies one can read about those who leave other Churches. In fact, I have come to see Protestants who supposedly “convert” to Catholicism as leaving home, not coming home.

Well since the Catholic Church is the Church that Christ founded on earth, and the Protestant Churches are just branches that sprouted 1500 years later, then I would say that those who left are coming Home, and not the other way around.

The Conversion stories are not just subjective. And that is the beauty of it. They actually present the objective reasons for them converting. And conversion for them was not easy. Many agonized for years. But in the end, they had to follow where truth led them. Those who converted are not your run of the mill Protestant. They are well educated people with theology degrees. They converted as if almost against their will.
In the end they had to bend to Truth.

Scott Hahn put it so well. He made a promise to God to follow the Truth wherever it led. And Truth led Him to the Catholic Church.

And this is only reasonable. Since Christ is the Truth, then any search for Truth will lead you to Christ. And Christ can only lead you to His Church.

The subjective aspect of the conversion stories give it the human touch, the warmth. But what led these people to convert is objective truth.

That you have not converted is understandable. Your conversion is not in our time but in God’s time. But one day the blinders will fall off and you will see it and you will have a Eureka moment. 🙂 But all in God’s time.

Scott and Kimberley’s story is interesting. Scott ploughed on with his studies (reading hundreds of books and studying till 2am!) so he was convicted of the truth easily. Kimberly refused to study or even read. She even stopped praying a prayer that essentially went ’ I will follow you Lord where you lead" because she was afraid that this might mean the Catholic Church. I think it was only 5 years later, after she finally prayed that prayer, her heart melted and she started to read and study again. After that she was received into the Church.

All in God’s time. But we must not harden our hearts and set our own agenda’s. We must pray for an open heart and an open mind.

No - YOU lost when you rejected the Lord and his Church (Luke 10:16).
That’s the tragedy of Protestantism - spiritual pride, rebellion and arrogance.

As for being killed for what you believe in - tell it to the Martyrs of Gorkum who were killed my Calvinists in the 16th century for being Catholic.

Tell it to John Fisher, Thomas More and countless others murdered by Henry VIII for being Catholic.
T****ell it to the thousands butchered by Elizabeth I for being Catholic.

**Don’t **waste my time by trying to tell me that Catholics are the only ones in history with blood on their hands. There’s plenty of blame to go around.

The only difference is that, after all of your railing against the Church - you’ll still be seperated from the Body of Christ.

Elvis long before the martyr of Gorkum, King Henry or Queen Elizabeth Roman Catholics tortured, murdered those they diagreed with. Long before.
The Roman Cahtolic Church was extrememtly corrupted at the time of the reformation. Church offices were being sold. After the reformation that process stopped. The RCC was actively involved in civil matters crownong princes and kings deposing princes and kings. Is this the work of Gods Church? After the reformation most of this stopped. Before the reformation The RCC charged taxes to civil governments. Is the the wordk of Christ Church is this a practice of the apostles? Again after the reformation this practice stopped. These are just a few.
The Reformation was a God sent against a coruupt, abusive apostate church.

Yes you can practice your faith freely and that is good. Freedom to worship whatever god/s one wishes to worship is enscribed in civil law.

But that doesn’t say anything at all save that you are free to do what you want in this regard.

New agers worship crystals, alliens, Satanists worship satan, etc, etc,. It doesn’t mean anything.

The fact remains that Christ established one Church. If you are a Christian, then you are either following His expressed will by remaiing in His Church or insisting on your own will by stubbornly remaining separate. But yes, you are right, you are free to do either.
Christ founded a Church an assembly a congregation. The Roman Catholic element of that Church went wayward, lost its moorings. This element became extremely corrupt, abusive and apostate. Yet you deny the seriousness of that sin and insist that all follow you. This can only be termed foolishness.

Christ founded a Church an assembly a congregation.
Yes indeed He did. And that congregation was and is the Catholic Church. And everyone who was baptized into the Trinity was baptized into the Church. That is why in Acts 2:47 it is written that the Lord was adding to their number all those who were being saved.

That Church then is the same Catholic Church now.
The Roman Catholic element of that Church went wayward, lost its moorings.
In practice yes. In doctrine no. That is why she always recovers. Because no matter how some of her members got, she never taught error so there is always the Truth to go back to.

Not so with protestantism, because she taught error, no matter how holy some of the members are, the splintering and wayward way will continue becuase the truth has been adulterated. That is why to this day only the Catholic Church has been able to hold on to the truth regarding contraception. The truth that even Calvin and Luther held on to but which all protestant denominations have since eschewed.

But the Catholic Church did not lose it’s moorings. It was always and will ever be anchored on Christ. That was never in jeopardy because Christ made that promise, that the gates of hell will not prevail against his Church. And He has kept that promise. Through all that time of decadence she never taught error.
This element became extremely corrupt, abusive and apostate.
Corrupt and abusive yes, apostate no. That is why she is able to recover from corruption.
Yet you deny the seriousness of that sin and insist that all follow you.
Oh but we are not denying the sin. And yes it was very serious. We are not asking you to follow the sin. but the truth. Because she always and will always teach the truth. We have Chrsit’s words on that.

It would be like if your dad was philandering and causing your mother heartache but he says 'son don’t do what I am doing because what I am doing is a sin".

Some of her members may not have practiced what she preached but they never preached what they practiced.
This can only be termed foolishness.
Nope. Wisdom. Wisdom to be able to separate practice from doctrine. What we are seeking is objective Truth. And that Christ has given to His Church.

BTW, my husband grew up in the Assemblies of God. There were a lot of problems in that denomination. About twenty years ago, his parents left the Assemblies of God after a major conflict with church politics, and didn’t attend ANY church for fourteen years because they were so disgusted with church
I was raised pagan, and took a break from paganism to attend an AoG church for about 2 1/2 years during my search for God. The AoG church I went to messed me up way more than I can convey here.
I had been dating a guy before I went to this church that beat on me. After he went to jail he started going to this church and claimed to me he was changed and that I should go. That’s how I got there. I was very involved in this church, teaching Sunday school and Wed night classes, I was there every morning for prayer, and nothing ever seemed like it was enough. A few months after joining this church the pastor informed me during prayer that if I didn’t marry this guy, I would be going to hell. By this point, I was (for lack of a better word) brainwashed. So I married the guy, even though I knew I shouldn’t. He was still beating me, and very abusive. The entire church knew he beat on me too, I’d show up with swollen eyes, cut lips, black eyes, bruises all over and I even told the pastor and others what was going on. You know what I was told? “Wives submit to your husbands as unto the Lord”, this was the general response to him beating me.
On top of that, whenever I had a question about the Bible (even though I was a Sunday school teacher), I was told “you’re a baby in Christ, you need milk, not meat”. We (most there at the church) were made to feel guilty constantly for anything we did that didn’t match up with what the pastor thought needed to be done. For instance, if we didn’t give more than 10% tithe, we were facing hell. If we didn’t believe just as the pastor said, we were facing hell. If we didn’t do as the pastor said, we were facing hell. It was exhausting trying to be perfect in the pastor’s eyes. Oh yes, I should mention, this was a “name it and claim it” word of life, type church. You know, the kind where they believe that you must give lots of money to the church so you can get rich. and if we spoke anything contrary to what the pastor said/believed, not only were we going to hell, but we were told “you can’t speak against God’s anointed”.
It got to a point with me that my ex, who I never felt I was really married to, tried to kill me and was chasing me with a knife to finish me off. I left him with the kids for our safety (I must mention, none of my kids were his, they were from a previous marriage). After fleeing to another state about 1000 miles away, he found me. At that point, I decided that if he was going to find me anyway, I was going back where I knew people, and file a protection order and divorce. During court, the entire church stood with him in court and I had nobody. I tried to still go to the church after the divorce, but I was treated awful as were my kids, we were pretty much shunned and treated like we were evil. At this point, because of how they were treating my kids mainly, we left the church (except for my oldest daughter who continued there until last April-that’s a subject for another thread though).
After I left the church, they even went so far as to kidnap my youngest son and hold him “until I returned to the church”. Needless to say, I called the police and got my son back fairly easy, but the police didn’t do anything to the church, just told them they weren’t allowed to take kids like that and slapped them on the wrist so to speak.
Because of all this “spiritual abuse” I left all churches, returned to paganism and witchcraft for years. It was only because of the Grace of God that I am in RCIA today. I guess God heard my cries even when I was with this abusive church and pity on me, so He drew me to the Catholic church, the church I believe is the True church.
So in reading what the OP said, I can’t understand why someone would want to go “backwards” from where I have been.
And for the person I quoted here, at least I know that the issues with the AoG was shared by others (your husbands parents), it makes me feel ‘not so alone’ in what I’ve been through.
OP, as someone else stated, there are charismatic Catholic services, I suggest you check them out before making your decision. I will pray for you.
Rachel
