Jars, Please try to remember this form has many diff faith and all are not go to agree on all things so yes we do get in some bad debates but you here to get both sides, and you can always hit the ignort button and claim down,I know I .v learn a lot here,Stay claim,Stay here and enjoy your self, dont run at the first sign of trouble
Thanks Bill! Yeah, I think this will be very enjoyable (difficult at times to, but I’m in control of what I say and what I respond to - so I need to remember that, right?). I really like reading different points of view and in just the few days I’ve been here I’ve learned a lot. As someone who is a former Catholic (me) I was quite taken aback to have read terminology that I have used was insulting to other Catholics. These are terms that I use everyday, with other Catholics (my entire family is Catholic), many of my friends are Catholic, there are at least 3 Catholic churches within walking distance of my house, and not one person who I’ve every said this to, was insulted. Not one. Where I come from it’s normal conversation. When I speak about praying “to” statues - I have done that and I continue to see it done “here” all the time. I’ve mentioned the word “veneration” to some of my friends here (a word that I’ve seen used here) - no one here knows what I’m talking about. I’m not in some 3rd world nation…I’m in the northeastern part of the US.

Again, I don’t want to reheat an already discussed topic - not my intention. I’m just stating my continued personal experience.

But - I do want to thank you Bill for your encouragement and I really look forward to future discussions in other threads (or this one if I see more conversation addressed to me). 🙂

Blessings!

I very much want to quit the catholic church and become an
Assembly of God member. Am i doomed for hell?

I don’t fit in with the CC, there is no enthusiasm there.
People only go to hell if they want to. They have to reject Christ and His Church aka sin against the Holy Spirit which is blasphemy which is the unforgivable sin.

You have to seriously re-think your decision as to “why” you would leave a Church for another. Christ did not take on human flesh, die and resurrect Himself establishing His Church in the process to “ENTERTAIN” you with “enthusiasm” (or anyone else for that matter). He did it to allow you the opportunity to accept Him into your heart and life through His Church to be saved.

The only reason to leave one Church for another is to search out the Church that Christ did in fact establish. It is NOT a valid reason to leave one Church for another because you weren’t properly entertained due to lack of “enthusiasm” there.

First you have to discern if the Church you are in could have been the Church which Christ established…does it have a history which takes it back to the Apostles and Christ Himself or not. The answer that is: YES. The Roman Catholic Church can trace it’s lineage back to the mid-1st Century to Sts. Peter and Paul and they were the Apostles of Christ Himself.

Next question: does the Church you are thinking of going to…does it have a history which takes it back to the Apostles and Christ Himself or not. The answer is: NO. The Assemblies of God can trace it’s lineage back to April 2-12, 1914 to Eudorus N. Bell & J. Roswell Flower and they were…??? Who knows - what we do know is that they started their church about 1,900 years after the Church in Rome had already been established - which shows that there is no way that the Assemblies of God could be the Church which Christ came to earth to establish for the sake of our salvation!

If you want to move to another Church, then do some research…are there any other Churches besides the Catholic Church which trace their lineage back to the Apostles and Christ Himself - if so, then it or they are the only ones who, besides the Catholic Church could possibly be the Church Christ established for the sake of your salvation. Pray for discernment and research only those Churches which actually “could be” the Church Christ established.

Don’t waste your time and do not risk your salvation, over looking into any churches which could not possibly be His Church.

Can you see yourself on Judgement Day and Christ says: “So why do you reject My Church that I died to establish for the sake of your salvation?” Are you really prepared to answer Him, “Well, you know Jesus, the people in Your Church weren’t very ‘enthusiastic’ so I joined a church which clearly could have in no way been Your Church but that didn’t matter to me since at least they had the enthusiasm I craved. Now, uh, will you please let me into Your Heaven?” Serious, why should He allow you into His Heaven, if you wouldn’t even refused to go (stay) in His Church?

Come on people, we’ve got to think things through! God gave us a brain for us to use it. 🙂

The CATHOLIC (he never mentioned “Roman”) Church traces it’s lineage all the way back to the apostles (all twelve) and Christ on the day of Pentecost to be exact (the Church was universal from the first, as was evidenced by the different tongues spoken).

I believe this is in responce to my post that was commented on. Now if you read my post I said “not where I live.” How is this being prejudice if I’m speaking the truth about this where I live. Now if you speak the truth is being prejudice? I’m far from being prejudice. I never said anything bad about the priests, as a matter of fact I have said in other sites that I respect them and have nothing against them. Now I’m prejudice because I said nothing against them except “not where I live” that don’t sound prejudice to me. Look at the whole picture before you call others prejudice.
If you looked at the whole picture you would not have mentioned anything about our priests (since they sacrifice much to become what they are and preach in places most people would avoid).

p.s. Please explain what you meant by “I wonder why”?
Look I said on my post that I tell them to do what their religion does. I preach both ways about baptism, infant and adult. Instead of questioning me about this you should be happy that someone is going to these people spreading the word of God. There are no Catholic priests doing it. I wonder why?

I’ve responded to your posts in detail but you have not replied back. I think you are pulling out because you are afraid: afraid that you may have got it wrong afterall.

I pray that the Holy Spirit grant you the courage and humility to face the Truth. Seek the Truth and follow it wherever it lead you.

So I can’t speak the truth now. If you read my post I said that I have nothing against them and that I respect them. Why can’t I? Its true they don’t where I live. Sorry if the truth hurts but its true.
The I wonder why thing. Yes I wonder why the don’t go to the nursing homes where I live. Why don’t they, I am wondering why. And I have not got an answer or even any kind of explination except “you would not have mentioned anything about our priests.”
I think instead of telling me to look at the whole picture you need to read what I said, and there was no disrepect for the priests in what I said.

Oh Benedictus2 you make me smile! But I must tell you that I’m not taking the bait you laid out for me, but nice try! I love your challenging tactic to label me as “afraid.” Tally-ho friend - good try! If there are folks here that want to think I’m afraid - so be it. Think what you want - harmless to me and doesn’t make it true.

In all seriousness - I have no desire to prove I’m right to you or anyone else here, what would that get me here? I would need a case of Pepto-Bismal just to get through a few conflicting posts! This a Catholic forum! I’m Protestant! The truth is we are not going to agree. We believe different things. Bottom line is - I’m right you’re wrong. Infuriating to read that isn’t it? It’s better to say, and more accurate to say, I have my opinion, you have yours.

By the way, I do however love the fact that you prayed for the Holy Spirit to grant me courage and humility to face the Truth. THAT is fantastic prayer that I would never turn down. I pray the same for you.

Have a great day, ok? 😉 Really - your comment made my day!

(Oh, and FYI - I’m not pulling out of the forum - I was pulling out of this thread for further comments unless directed to me. Somehow I’m strangely drawn to this thread!)

That’s good. I knew I’d make someone happy today :).

That’s good, In that case, how about replying to my posts 574, 575, 576, 577, 578?

You see, in your later posts you still are going on about us being idolatrous and I explained all that in detail in these posts. Now I think I have clarified the Catholic position on these posts and yet you persist in your misconception.

So if you have cause to believe what you still believe about these things then perhaps you would rebut what I posted. Unless you have no rebuttal in which case I may right? 😉

Hey Benedictus2:

Let’s see…If I don’t have a rebuttal to respond to your postings, than you’re correct? Ha! You’re pulling my leg! Let’s see - I wrote a comment to state what I believed as true, then you wrote what you believed as true, so you were the last person to post, and therefore THAT makes you correct! (Could you imagine how long these threads would be if THAT were true – there would be no end!) Again, you made me smile!

Now Benedictus2, I appreciated your comments and opinions, but there really wasn’t a whole lot of new information in what you wrote, so it didn’t seem to need a response (but I did appreciate that you took the time to comment). AND Yes, you clarified the Catholic position, but you and I know stating a position doesn’t mean the action is correct. It means you declared what you do or believe - nothing more - nothing less.

With all that said, I am happy to go through the postings you gave me and answer the questions you directed to me. If I missed any let me know, ok?

Number 574 Your asked: My question is to you HOW do you know it is indeed the word of God. Why do YOU believe it is the Word of God? Everything else you wrote there is your own comments / opinions.

I answered that in my response to you in # 541 in which I said: To me this statement is enough to verify that the Bible (Scripture) is the authority over all of us. There is no other book in this world that is God-breathed. 2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.

Number 575 is not directed to me and it contains no questions.

Number 576 you asked me if I remember a comment I made to someone else. Yes, I do remember, and that person understood what I was speaking about. The rest of your posting there seems to be your opinion.

Number 577 You asked: When you were Catholic did you even bother to find out what the Catholic Church really believed? Answer: Yes I did. As a matter of fact, I went to a Catholic College. It was there that a Catholic priest told my class that the bible was a fairy tale. The name of the class was “Christian Spirituality” - he was teaching from a Catholic bible. He “taught” a lot of other things too…if you think that’s insulting…you’d be really hurt to hear more. Everything else in the posting was your comments / opinion.

Number 578 You asked: Have you seen people talk to pictures of their loved ones especially when the loved one has just passed away? I haven’t seen anyone talk to photographs of their dead loved ones. I’ve seen them look at them to remember good times or just memories (as I did just this last month when my mom died). I didn’t talk to her picture nor did my sister or anyone else at her wake. I’m not saying people don’t do this as I’m assuming by your question to me that you’ve either seen this done or you do this. (If you told me you’ve seen people do this I wouldn’t tell you that this is a misconception by you - I’d say, wow - that’s too bad - I hope those folks overcome that issue.)

In my later posts I wrote what I see my Catholic friends and family do, in the neighborhood where I live and in the churches. This is not a misconception. As much as you want to keep telling me I’m not seeing this, I am seeing it. Obviously you don’t do what they do, and you and I finally agree! That’s a good thing! It’s nice that we agree about something!

So, Benedictus2, I’m not exactly sure what it is here that you’re longing to be correct about, but by all means if it makes you happy to declare you’re correct, it’s perfectly ok with me. Victory is yours!

No. It is not about being the last one to post. I was just curious as to why you did not rebut any of my posts.

And no this is not about me being correct or your being correct but find out which claim is true. Are we not supposed to seek after the truth?

So, to the rest of your post.
And to this I replied, the scripture being referred to in 2 Tim is the Old Testament. Now the Bible has both OT and NT

Therefore the question still remains: How do you know that the Bible is indeed the word of God?

Second question: After reading my posts and those of others do you still believe that:
a) Catholics worship Mary
b) Catholics commit idolatry by using statues to remind them of the saints and our Blessed Mother
c) We cannot ask the Mary and the saints to pray for us?

Number 577 You asked: When you were Catholic did you even bother to find out what the Catholic Church really believed? Answer: Yes I did. As a matter of fact, I went to a Catholic College. It was there that a Catholic priest told my class that the bible was a fairy tale. The name of the class was “Christian Spirituality” - he was teaching from a Catholic bible. He “taught” a lot of other things too…if you think that’s insulting…you’d be really hurt to hear more. Everything else in the posting was your comments / opinion.
First, your teacher was sort of right and wrong. I don’t know what exactly he said but yes some stories in the Bible are indeed myths, that is not historical events or people. But it does not mean that because they are not inspired.

So since Catholic doctrine is not just about whether some stories in the Bible are myths or not, did you actually find out what we really believe regarding:
a) Mary and the saint ( now this one I dont’t you did or you would not have posted what you posted before)
b) the Eucharist - which is the the source and summit of the Christian life
c) the Sacraments
d) the Pope, Magisterium and Papal infallibility
e) Why we are saved, what we are saved from and what we are saved for?
Number 578 You asked: Have you seen people talk to pictures of their loved ones especially when the loved one has just passed away? I haven’t seen anyone talk to photographs of their dead loved ones. (If you told me you’ve seen people do this I wouldn’t tell you that this is a misconception by you - I’d say, wow - that’s too bad - I hope those folks overcome that issue.)
I think you completely missed teh point there. We are both material and spiritual beings. when we worship, we used matter. (Okay you will think that that is just another comment but this comment is so you will know why we do the things we do)
In my later posts I wrote what I see my Catholic friends and family do, in the neighborhood where I live and in the churches. This is not a misconception. As much as you want to keep telling me I’m not seeing this, I am seeing it. Obviously you don’t do what they do, and you and I finally agree! That’s a good thing! It’s nice that we agree about something!
Did you actually try to dig deeper and find out what it is they actually do?
When they said they do not worship but they “venerate”, did you try to understand what that means? If you did, would you care to share how you understood that word and why you have an issue with venerating saints?

No. It is not about being the last one to post. I was just curious as to why you did not rebut any of my posts.

And no this is not about me being correct or your being correct but find out which claim is true. Are we not supposed to seek after the truth?

c) We cannot ask the Mary and the saints to pray for us?
You asked me what I thought and believed so I told you. Then you told me. No response required. It’s on me to further question you. I know what I believe and why. I didn’t need to hear your comments further. If I did - I would have asked you.

You asked me “How do I know the Bible is the Word of God” and I told you. If don’t accept my response - it’s your choice. If you’re going to throw in a rule NOW about Old AND New Testatment - well that’s your problem. I just asked a question to someone else in another thread regarding Joseph and Mary having sex during the length of their marriage - after Jesus was born - and that person could only provide me with a quote from the Old Testament. I didn’t go back to that person and say - Now show me the New Testament. (Really, give me a break.) I’m not going to keep responding to you until you find an answer you like.

Ok - your last three questions above:
Catholics worship Mary? My response: Yes, my family and friends do it - their words not mine. Do all Catholics worship Mary - no - you told me you don’t.

Catholics commit idolatry? Same answer as above - yes some do - some don’t.

We cannot ask Mary and the saints to pray for us? You do - my friends and family do. I’m not sure what that’s going to get for you. I don’t - I pray to Jesus. He hears me. I don’t need to pray to Mary or the Saints.

Does that answer your questions?

So I can’t speak the truth now. If you read my post I said that I have nothing against them and that I respect them. Why can’t I? Its true they don’t where I live. Sorry if the truth hurts but its true.
The I wonder why thing. Yes I wonder why the don’t go to the nursing homes where I live. Why don’t they, I am wondering why. And I have not got an answer or even any kind of explination except “you would not have mentioned anything about our priests.”

I think you meant to be critical, i.e., judgmental, please reread what you said.

p.s. And the truth doesn’t hurt because while you’re going to nearby nursing homes (a good deed) many priests are giving up the luxuries of civilized society in order to preach the Word of God.

I know what I meant and I don’t have to re-read it. I was not being judgmental. If that were the case I would have said “I wonder why!” ! this is judgmental "I wonder why? ? this is a question. Notice the difference.
Do I think a priest need to be on call 24/7 Yes I do.
This as a very nice lady and one of God.

Bill where are you getting your information.
What do you mean by “if your pastor does not come to your church each week then may be you are not doing your job.” I’m doing my job. With comments like this I’m starting to loose respect for you.
How many priests do I have at my church 0 I’m not Catholic.
Now I said we have one Catholic church in my city and in the surrounding area I’m pretty sure there is more then one.
I am doing my job I go to the nursing homes so don’t tell me I’m not doing my job. The priests aren’t doing their jobs by not going. Why don’t you say that instead making false accusations about me. I resent your comment about me. And the respect is dwindiling away as we speak.
I don’t have a church.
I’m not the only pastor that does this in my city. Why is it my job to go to them to find out they should be doing it in the first place. With this comment, the respect is gone. I have had enough of the blame the Rev., attack the Rev., make false accusations against the Rev., I’m doing my job its the priests, yes the priests that aren’t doing their job. But lets put it all on the Rev. because he’s not Catholic and we can’t say anything against our priests so its all the Rev’s. falt that our priests aren’t doing their job. Instead of blaming the one who is doing his job blame the one’s who aren’t. Your Catholic priests.

I think you meant to be critical, i.e., judgmental, please reread what you said.

Did you notice the ? mark after it? That indicates a question.
Did you notice a ! mark after it? That would have indicated being judgmental.
But you did not see ! instead you saw ?

Giving up luxuries like what? Are they living in boxes on the streets, are they eating out of dumpsters, do they have dirty smelly close, do they freeze in the winter because they have no heat, do they burn up in the summer because they have no A/C,do they go without medical treatment because of no insurance, when they retire are they going to be out on the street with no money.

We have families that give up the luxuries to witness to people in other countries. These families live in shacks in the forests. Not just one person were talking whole families with young children who have given up luxuries. Children willing to do this to spread the word of God. They weren’t sent there by someone or told they have to go. They want to go, they ask to go. They raised their hands and said take us we want to go.

When they said they do not worship but they “venerate”, did you try to understand what that means? If you did, would you care to share how you understood that word and why you have an issue with venerating saints?
So in relation to the OP; will I go to “hell” if I don’t do any of these things or agree with Catholics on them?

**Giving up luxuries like what? ** Are they living in boxes on the streets, are they eating out of dumpsters, do they have dirty smelly close, do they freeze in the winter because they have no heat, do they burn up in the summer because they have no A/C,do they go without medical treatment because of no insurance, when they retire are they going to be out on the street with no money.

The amenities of civilized society like electricity, indoor plumbing, and other things that make life a little easier, I don’t think that’s too hard to understand, furthermore, priests are well aware that they might be told to live in areas which are underdeveloped and poor as such it is a choice they make beforehand. They also do not have the comfort of being close to their family and friends but again they are well aware of this before they become priests. There are many other things that priests give up willingly and that sacrifice is greater than you realize (to take a vow of celibacy and poverty is not easy nowadays).

Moreover, priests work really hard (whenever they are needed) to administer the sacraments, while shepherding a community of believers. Here’s just something of what priests do in respect to their calling:

**"When Our Lady of Angels became a parish 50 years ago, two priests ministered to a total of 230 parishioners. Today, three priests, and for now two priests, minister to more than 10,000 registered parishioners, including about 2,500 Spanish-speaking parishioners. The priests offer daily and Sunday masses, and with the assistance of two deacons, visit those at assisted-living facilities and the sick at home, at nursing homes and at hospitals (priests are on call day and night).

They handle funerals and burials, weddings, baptisms, confessions (morning and evening), help the Bishop with confirmations, perform other religious services, teach and take part in classroom and individual religion instructions and attend meetings of parish organizations and activities, in addition to having responsibility for business aspects of the parish and maintenance of the church and other buildings, including some responsibility for a regional school.

They minister to the spiritual needs of so many with disabilities of aging and retardation, strokes, Alzheimer’s, hypertension, cancer, depression, addiction and character disorders, conditions not as prevalent 50 years ago.

The priests live together. Human nature suggests they are not going to always agree together. They get a few days off every now and then, or may go on a retreat occasionally, but the stress and pressures are still always present.

Say a prayer daily for priests and for ministers of all religion denominations." **

p.s. It doesn’t matter whether or not you had a question mark at the end of your sentence (you could be playing coy and/or being passive aggressive). And I still find your question offensive (especially when you take into effect what you said before that).

I do some of the same thingd they do exept confession and the Bishop thing and I do it being disabled myself. So see we have a lot in common, I know you will disagree.

Ya know now matter what I do or what I say you will always find falt with it, even if its the truth. If you don’t believe what I say about the ? and ! it really don’t matter, at least I know it wasn’t meant in any disrespecting way. I do commend the priests for all the work they do which I never denied. It was a simple question and a simple statement about where I live. But I guess nobody understands that I said “not where I live” which has nothing to do with anyplace eles. It was taken out of context and turned into this anti-Rev movement because I spoke the truth where I live. I have never said anything nasty about the Catholic religion itself, I just disagree with some of the teachings and some of their ways. If that is being disrespecting then I’m sorry you feel that way. All I see is a anti-Rev., attack Rev. and twist his meanings. Well enough is enough If you don’t believe me then you don’t, there is nothing I can do or say to make you believe me.

That is why using secular historians help. You can’t say that they stacking the odds in favour of the Catholic Church.
LOL, OH yes I can! And I will. Wikipedia is one good example, but there are others, not online.

But in regards to your comment above re Protestants with no doctrine of love, and falling for the wiles of Calvinism; I have to say that is not factual either. Calvinism is not entirely representative of Protestantism; and much of what he teaches is not in fact accepted by all of us
