You can always send some money to the FSSP and orders like that.Yes, it is pretty extreme that I have to use the USCCB as a litmus test for charities to avoid. I’ll give to Peter’s Pence and my parish. Charitable giving I scrutinize closely.
There’s no end to their boldness, huh? There seems to be only one word to describe the CCHD: scam.CCHD has said they will NOT release the list of organizations they will support until affter their yearly collection.
It was absolutely inevitable that this would happen from the moment the CCHD was created. This is their mission statement: "Its mission is to address the root causes of poverty in America…"The question is, how did the political arm get so powerful to the detriment of the faith?
Exactly! There’s no end to their boldness, huh? There seems to be only one word to describe the CCHD: scam.
Do you have a source for this claim?CCHD has said they will NOT release the list of organizations they will support until affter their yearly collection.
Maybe Mary and her neighbors need to hear about the troubles and wrongs of abortion alsoExactly!
BTW check out the USCCB web site they just made a “cartoon” to ecplain what CCHD is/does. Oh brother give me a break!
VERY well said!It was absolutely inevitable that this would happen from the moment the CCHD was created. This is their mission statement: "Its mission is to address the root causes of poverty in America…"
This is a political objective, not a moral conundrum. There is simply no dispute that you would find different organizations being funded if the money was being distributed by conservatives rather than by liberals. This is not meant to take shots at either side, only to point out that ones personal view of how the world works will determine how one would address the “root causes of poverty.”
The distribution of CCHD funds is controlled by people with unavoidable biases as to the solution to this prudential question. The political arm of the USCCB became powerful because it disburses millions of dollars addressing political issues. Given the objective of the CCHD it is every bit as political a group as the DNC and the RNC - and it is not reformable.

And here lies the confusion. When well-meaning Catholics hear the words “poverty together with USCCB and social justice,” (these are our bishops, after all) they will good-heartedly pull out their checkbooks with the immediate intention of helping the poor never giving a second thought nor realizing the political dimension. Which brings us to another point…is the CCHD honoring donor intent? But when one thinks to address the “root causes of poverty” one is going political.
I really am having difficulty seeing how this organization can ever be anything but political in its fundamental nature. No matter how well meaning anyone is, addressing the “root causes” of poverty implies some kind of structural societal failing OTHER than a lack of immediate charity.
I don’t much think they are, to be frank about it. It has been my impression that the CCHD is into a sort of “Liberation Theology Lite”; something I don’t think most Catholics willingly support. And here lies the confusion. Thanks for that link. That article was a nice summation of the whole thing.osv.com/tabid/7621/itemid/7119/US-bishops-overhaul-controversial-program.aspx
Scroll down to the section Critics silenced, I also heard this from RealCatholicTV
From what I remember hearing was that last year and years before that, the list was available for public view, but again that’s what I heard and have no real proof for thatThanks for that link. That article was a nice summation of the whole thing.
I do think you’re reading into it a bit too much, though. The article said:
“But since the list won’t be available until after the annual CCHD collection this month, Gasper said there is still cause for concern.”

The article does not say (as you imply) that CCHD has refused to release the list until after the collection. It simply says that the list won’t be available until after the collection. I can think of a dozen less sinister explanations for that than CCHD’s obstinate and calculated refusal. We should not jump to conclusions.
I whole-heartedly agree. It would be nice to go to the CCHD website and see links to the websites for all the groups they give money to. I think such a gesture would go a long way considering all the mistakes they have made in the past. If anything, such a thing should encourage people to give more. From what I remember hearing was that last year and years before that, the list was available for public view, but again that’s what I heard and have no real proof for that
But I would still say that if CCHD wants to move away from this blow then they should consider releasing the list, I mean what do they have to hide?
