Yes, it is pretty extreme that I have to use the USCCB as a litmus test for charities to avoid. I’ll give to Peter’s Pence and my parish. Charitable giving I scrutinize closely.
You can always send some money to the FSSP and orders like that.

CCHD has said they will NOT release the list of organizations they will support until affter their yearly collection.

There’s no end to their boldness, huh? There seems to be only one word to describe the CCHD: scam.

The question is, how did the political arm get so powerful to the detriment of the faith?
It was absolutely inevitable that this would happen from the moment the CCHD was created. This is their mission statement: "Its mission is to address the root causes of poverty in America…"

This is a political objective, not a moral conundrum. There is simply no dispute that you would find different organizations being funded if the money was being distributed by conservatives rather than by liberals. This is not meant to take shots at either side, only to point out that ones personal view of how the world works will determine how one would address the “root causes of poverty.”

The distribution of CCHD funds is controlled by people with unavoidable biases as to the solution to this prudential question. The political arm of the USCCB became powerful because it disburses millions of dollars addressing political issues. Given the objective of the CCHD it is every bit as political a group as the DNC and the RNC - and it is not reformable.

VERY well said!

This is my problem with it as well. Short-term misjudgments, ignorance or even political biases are one thing. They can be corrected. But when one thinks to address the “root causes of poverty” one is going political. Conservatives, for instance, (and with some justification) think the main root cause of poverty in the U.S. is single parenthood. Some who are further to the right think single parenthood is affirmatively encouraged by the welfare system. Liberals believe it is an unjust distribution of wealth. Some think it is basically exploitation of workers by the powerful. Far leftists believe it is systemic and can only be cured by revolutionary changes in the economic structure.

I really am having difficulty seeing how this organization can ever be anything but political in its fundamental nature. No matter how well meaning anyone is, addressing the “root causes” of poverty implies some kind of structural societal failing OTHER than a lack of immediate charity.

"The victory would not have been achieved without the help of the Chinese Staff and Workers’ Association (CSWA), which began in 1979 as the first workers’ center for Chinese workers in New York City. Assisted by a mix of local and national grants from the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, the organization has not only made a profound impact on the Chinese but has improved working conditions for all ethnic groups throughout New York City and the tri-state area.

Other CSWA successes over the past 30 years include: over $50 million in backwages awarded to workers; establishment of the first independent restaurant union in the Chinatown neighborhood in New York City; securing the first wage increase in ten years for New York state’s tipped employees; and winning a legal decision prohibiting employers from stealing tips.

Echoing Catholic social teaching’s concern about solidarity and the rights of workers, CSWA’s mission is to promote solidarity with and between workers while advocating for improved working conditions and policy changes. This means the local work it does has big repercussions."

The above is from the CCHD website, concerning Chinese workers in NY. What does any of this have to do with the Catholic Church? “Establishment of the first independent restaurant union”? Promoting “solidarity with and between workers” and advocating for “policy changes”? And yet this was assisted by CCHD.

And here lies the confusion. When well-meaning Catholics hear the words “poverty together with USCCB and social justice,” (these are our bishops, after all) they will good-heartedly pull out their checkbooks with the immediate intention of helping the poor never giving a second thought nor realizing the political dimension. Which brings us to another point…is the CCHD honoring donor intent?

I don’t much think they are, to be frank about it. It has been my impression that the CCHD is into a sort of “Liberation Theology Lite”; something I don’t think most Catholics willingly support.

Scroll down to the section Critics silenced, I also heard this from RealCatholicTV
Thanks for that link. That article was a nice summation of the whole thing. 👍

I do think you’re reading into it a bit too much, though. The article said:

“But since the list won’t be available until after the annual CCHD collection this month, Gasper said there is still cause for concern.”

The article does not say (as you imply) that CCHD has refused to release the list until after the collection. It simply says that the list won’t be available until after the collection. I can think of a dozen less sinister explanations for that than CCHD’s obstinate and calculated refusal. We should not jump to conclusions.

From what I remember hearing was that last year and years before that, the list was available for public view, but again that’s what I heard and have no real proof for that 😦
But I would still say that if CCHD wants to move away from this blow then they should consider releasing the list, I mean what do they have to hide?

I whole-heartedly agree. It would be nice to go to the CCHD website and see links to the websites for all the groups they give money to. I think such a gesture would go a long way considering all the mistakes they have made in the past. If anything, such a thing should encourage people to give more.

Perhaps this present evaluation will lead to more transparency in that regard.

I have no faith that the CCHD will reform and I know that they will not be getting any of my limited funds. I will give to charities I feel I can trust as I am able. CCHD is not one of them. I went to their website and looked on the latest report I could find. (2008). What I saw made it clear to me that they will not be getting any of my money any time soon.

again- How would you go about finding which organisations are safe to fund that don’t directly or indirectly help out areas that go against church teachings?
