The OP’s gym tale reminded me of when I read of a “Catholic Community” in… Ohio? Wisconsin? other?

They do not calle themselves a “Catholic Church” but a “Catholic Community”.
They have Mass in the gym on Sundays.

On Holy Thursday, they had a complete Seder meal: tables throughout the gym to accomadate a large number of parishioners; followed directly with Holy Thursday Mass.
Eat then Mass.

There’s group of orthodox laity who have formed a group and they are always writing to their Bishop about this.

travellers, beware of "Catholic Community"s

I was wondering about the Diocese of Richmond VA- they have had a new bishop- Have things changed very much there?

CatholicNerd:
The Novus Ordo, when celebrated Ad Orientem and in the Latin, is a beautiful and reverent liturgy that to most Catholics could look just like the Tridentine High Mass.

.
The Novus Ordo (Mass of Paul VI) in my parish is celebrated reverently, priest facing the congregation and in English. It is quite beautiful and reverent. The music? Well, not always the best (I wish someone would slap an interdict on Oregon Catholic Press), but we’re working on it. Our Bishop and our Pastor takes GIRM very seriously and the Pastor made a huge effort to catechise us on the requirements. Our choir director is taking the introits and Communion antiphons right from the missal and arranging them, usually in a minor key. The result is a very austere sound for which we (the choir) rec. a lot of compliments…of course, the congregation may well simply be relieved to be spared Hass and Haugen. The problem, as I see it, is that too many priests want to “stamp” the liturgy, leave their mark on it. To many liturgists and musicians are worried about “contemporary” sounds. They’ve all bought into the notion of “relevancy.” Jesus said,“If I be lifted up, I will draw all men unto me.” That’s what we need to be doing, lifting up the Crucified Christ in the Sacrifice of the Mass. That’s about as “relevant” as one could ever get.

Actually Catholic doctrine has a preference for boys serving at the altar. In most cases in the US, there is no reason to have altar servettes in flip-flops except to please the feminists who feel “left out”.

With respect, it isn’t a doctrine, it’s a discipline. I’m not saying that altar girls are a good idea, just that they fall under the category of discipline, not doctrine or dogma.

Well regardless of discipline, I still do not understand the reason for altar girls.

Apparently JPII approved of Bishops allowing them if there was a need. Not a lot different than EMHC. The abuse starts, continues, prevails, and then is declared a norm.

Benedict may change this during the year of the Eucharist.

At my parish we have 65 MALE altar servers…no girls any longer… thanks to the efforts of ONE MOM !!! Period!http://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon14.gif

What is the big deal with female altar servers? Is it an echo of the male-only priesthood?

Big Deal?? Why don’t you ask the feminist pagans masquerading as Catholics who are using them as a wedge to introduce their arguments for priestesses?

I know this doesn’t help, but thank you for helping me to appreciate the parish I am in.

The more I read these forums, the more thankful I am for our parish.
Abuses in our parish? if you could ever call it an abuse - Maybe once someone might have bowed their head when a profound bow was called for.

I’ll be praying for you and for your parish and ever grateful for the parish AND diocese I’m in.
Ditto…ditto…ditto…and ditto!

I invite you all to go to www.ewtn.com

click on the television link, then live t.v. and then on the media you prefer, either real video or windows media and then you can watch ewtn on your computer. It may take some downloading if its the first time you are ever watching something on your computer, but it doesn’t take long and its well worth it, just read through it and be sure to click on the right things.

then, if your Mass isn’t like this, why not find a Parish where it is? No matter how long it takes. Go to a different Church every day or every week, I am sure you will find one in your vicinity. Write to your Bishops and don’t get discouraged and like an earlier poster said, send your donations to EWTN instead of the parishes where you are finding such horrific stunts going on, it is really sad that someone would sit through that for two years, I wouldn’t have lasted through the whole Mass in that Parish.

I believe you and the other poster were probably referring to St. Joan of Arc (poor St Joan is turning in her grave) in Minneapolis. Ugh! :bigyikes:
