Ignore imperialism all you want when your side does it. Blowback is real.

People do not like being denigrated, even if the stabber is courteous and mellifluous while doing it. So yes, this may be a reason there is so much division in the country.

I’ve encountered enough ‘independents’ who emphasize ‘civility’ and ‘dialogue’ to tell that if it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, etc.

Remember Bahrain.
 
The current administration is all about denigration. It thrives on it like fuel to a fire.

Nations are fragile things, in part because they’re created not natural entities. Leaders who fracture the community by their use of demeaning language and bullying tactics are far more dangerous to the overall health of the republic. The rhetoric used currently encourages entrenched tribalism and silos rather than nation-building. We’re on the precipice of a splinter becoming a break. To imagine that this threat isn’t real and serious is woefully naive.
 
So now I’m an independent. A moment ago I’m quite sure I was assumed to be a Democrat. I wonder what the assumption will be next.

Where did I say you were a Democrat? I said your side. To think sides are limited by parties is oversimplification.
 
You seem completely unaware of the divisions in our nation which existed long before Trump was elected.
 
Not at all. The difference is that now we’re completely unable to discuss our divisions.
 
Clarity? Was there confusion before? Giving license to our own biases isn’t clarity.

Dude, civility is a cloak when discussing power relationships that are inherently economic and ruthless.

The left constantly condescends to those they don’t think are worth talking to. An extreme example is Kronstadt. Centrists are guilty of this as well.

Civility between people of vastly different political position is possible. Our nation and its constitution are based on an acknowledgment and a civil handling of those differences. We have had moments in the past when civility was respected. We could have it again. We have also had moments when it was worse than it is now - much worse - and yet we have recovered from those moments. So there is hope.
