My parish has female altar, and they don’t really bother me. Still, I sometimes wonder if the more traditionally oriented people may be right about it being helpful to increase the number of vocations to the priesthood to have boys only as altar servers. .
Bingo…

Well, if following ones bishop is proclaiming disobedience, which is what you are more or less acusing me off, then so be it!!!
I happen to know that my Archbishop, Sean Patrick O’Malley of Boston, is totally faithful to Rome and has been sent to my Archdiocese to do an awesome task…
BTW, you might spend some time praying for him and ALL bishops that they will be faithful to the Magisterium and all litugical practices…
What makes you arrogant enough to assume that I don’t do this already?

I remember when I started altar serving, girls were not allowed. Within a couple years they were permitted to serve but there were only a couple. When I graduated HS and stopped serving it was 50/50. Now it’s 90% altar girls. Any thoughts on why there would be such a disparity?

If boys are never close to priests and around priests and get to know priests then they will never consider being priests. I know many boys (ages 8- 12) who do not want to serve because girls are serving. Today we say “It’s their choice let them decide.” In the past the pastor or father of a family would say " you serve" and the boys would hapily serve even if reluctant at first.
Because of all the abuse claims, many pastors don’t want to get close to any kids…male or female. Sad but true.

Ouch!!! That wasn’t very nice …:tsktsk: I guess it’s by the tone of your post and threads… (I did a quick review.). I see that you are a very savy person but you just seem so busy putting the Church and everyone in their place… What gives…why are you so angry???
Anyway, I’ll add you to my prayer list.:blessyou:

At my parish, no adult can be alone in the same room with kids. I was up to my elbows the other day setting up the “stuff” for the creedence table and a kid walked into the sacristy.

I had to ask her to please backtrack, open the door and block it open.

Then I could continue…

Not only are you woefully arrogant, you also feel the need to judge me based on a “quick review” of the “tone” of my postings. C’mon, you really think that sorta stuff still plays in today’s world?

I’ll admit that I can be intolerant, but I’m simply tired of having my time wasted when trying to serve Jesus…

That is really upsetting to hear (read). Are you a deacon or priest? Or just a very involved adult? Regardless, it is disturbing.

I can’t believe you said that.

Topic? I don’t care for altar chicks*, just as I don’t care for the feminization of the liturgy. What I mean is that if one looks at the list of ministries for Sunday masses at my parish the participants are overwhelmingly female. Except for ministers of hospitality (ushers).

Dale Price had a great entry at his blog which was also published in the NOR (dead tree version). One of the lines went something like, “[AmChurch says]…men are cordially invited to sit down and shut-up.” I would just like to see more men, esp. young men involved in church ministries.

*it’s okay, I’m a chick myself and I save getting offended for serious things

I know this is about altar servers, but…women EMHC’s who distribute Holy Communion wearing jeans or dark red lipstick and nail polish drive me nuts!!! I will never be able to accept woman in roles on the altar. Even in my orthodox parish, the women are very prevalent on the altar. I am a woman, by the way. I love the role our Blessed Mother lays out for us, and also the other holy women in the Bible. They weren’t pushy, shovey, and controlling.

when you look at this, dont just look at it as being one thing changed. i think it was a bad idea. a lot of people think its just a small change, whats the difference. but its just one more step to go onto changing other bigger things. its a lot easier for people to consider having female priests when we already have female altar boys and females giving out communion. when you put some of these things into context you start to realize it might be abigger deal than you first thought.

Several years ago, my wife and I were on pastoral council. It was just before the priest abuse scandels hit the headlines. Our priest is a good man and used to be a boy scout leader, and loved it, but had to stop for his own self-protection. He really hated to do it, but had no choice. We have probably lost many vocations because of the abuse mess. The children aren’t scared of the priest. The priest is scared to be with the kids anymore. Very sad.

Suggestion: Add to “ignore” list too. It’s done wonders to lower my blood pressure in the past few hours.

But prayer is good too. It’ll take a lot to overcome that kind of rage and hatred. :gopray:

The whole thing just has a sort of “pagan-ness” to it, and it has nothing to do with the personal sanctity of women. The Church on the whole is becoming more feminized as women take over more and more of the roles in the Church. When that happens, it upsets the hierarchical nature of the Church, but because of feminism and society’s mistaken notion of equality, women are now in the Sanctuary. The altar is reserved for those representing Christ, so it should be men. There is a a whole different dynamic when it’s just men and boys on the altar than it is when it’s coed. Usually when some practice goes from all men to coed, it ends up becoming all female. Look the altars in your parishes. I bet that most of the Extraordinary Ministers, servers, and readers are girls. Some may hail this as progress, but it’s not. It’s leading to a departure from the nature of the Mass. Is it coincidence that this feminization of the altar coincides with the elimination of the vertical element in the Mass?

Your posting was a pleasure to read. It smacks of the truth.

Unfortunately if also ignites those 10’ long blue flames that shoot out of the bottoms of those sexist-feministas who are so intent in “bringing the Church into the 21st century.”

Thanks Dr. for the advice…I’ll consider it. Actually I have done it before to a few other “Pots” calling the “Kettle” black as it were…
