Women and Dress

For people who believe a skirt is better because it disguises the ‘curve’ of a woman’s body - what about when a man finds skirts more sexually attractive? Should we then abandon skirts? And yes, there are some men who are turned on by a woman in a dress or skirt.
I find this to be a curious example of trying to argue from both sides of one’s mouth. Wearing dresses is supposed to be more modest. But then it’s also more feminine. So, shouldn’t pants—which are supposedly less feminine—make women less attractive? So, for modesty sake, shouldn’t we encourage women to wear pants? 😁

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan of modesty. But some of the arbitrary “rules” I come across online make me scratch my head a bit.

When you’re a new Catholic and it’s your big sister and only other Catholic family member telling you that you’re not a real woman because of what you wear… that’s a bit insulting and upsetting. Haha.

But back to OP - men and women should both dress in such a way that they both are part of society but stand out from it. So instead of wearing a blouse that’s unbuttoned to reveal copious cleavage, you wear it so it’s unbuttoned just enough to breathe but not to be scandalous. And for men, instead of running around in a speedo, you wear modest swim trunks. It’s just subtle but obvious separations from the immodest culture that I think we need to display.

I guess I see it differently because I was surrounded by fundamentalist Baptists who thought the same thing - and I was like, no, that’s not how that works, but nice try, and I need a new pair of jeans so you likely don’t need to come to the mall with me. LOL.

You’re still obviously the bigger person, and I’m sorry your sister hurt your feelings. 🌹

Well put. My wife likes to be fashionable, but also modest. She doesn’t wear sleeveless stuff, or go around with an exposed mid-section. And sometimes she even wears pants (even to Mass! 😱). But she doesn’t own any burkas or potato sacks as far as I know.

It makes it tricky to find the right clothes at times, but she manages to do so. It’s possible. 🙂

I learned from hard experience that wearing a skirt makes me more of a target for harassment from men on the street.

Also when in crowded public transportation there is the increasing likelihood of upskirting where people take photos using their phones up a woman’s skirt. It’s a lot more common than people think.

Here’s some news on upskirting

I call for a crusade to convert the upper thighs to Christianity right now! Honestly

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

This thread is hilarious. I think we need a new modesty thread every week!

We can start with potato sacks that coordinate with the liturgical seasons and graduate to potato sacks with different designs for the various feasts!

I saw this guy - who I thought was rather monk-like -
about 32 or so - beard - somewhat long hair - calm expression -
noticed him sitting here and there at church - which I think is cool.
But last time - he sat in front of me with a black concert tee shirt on - not cool.
A heavy metal Christian band concert tee shirt - STRYPER - ?
At church - as the Priest with a light blue alb on - offers up the Eucharist -
ehh

Clutches her pearls and her St. Benedict crucifix ! 😱😱😱😱

There must be TWO potato sacks!

That’s kind of disturbing. I’ve not heard of “upskirting” before.

I’ve heard of it enough to own a few pairs of bike shorts or slip shorts.

I’d definitely agree with @Sarcelle though. More feminine outfits tended to actually increase harassment over jeans and a t-shirt.

I would really like to see one of those haute couture designers to have potato sacks in their collection.

They can market it as recycled potato sacks and very eco friendly.

Trivia tidbit: the iPhone I’m currently using is one I bought from the cell carrier in South Korea. Upskirting became such a problem in the ROK (and according to my friend who’s done six years in Japan, it’s also a known problem there) that on all phones over there, you cannot disable or silent the camera “shutter click” sound. (I thought it was a setting issue until I asked the guy who sold me the phone, who was clearly embarrassed that he had to explain why. Others who got phones from different carriers were also told the same thing.)
