Wore my veil at the NO today

Oh my you made me laugh OUT LOUD!!!
I wear the most beautiful mantillas in the world from www.halo-works.com .I spent most of the first few Masses (they are all NO) feeling the edge of the beautiful lace, wondering if I looked as beautiful as I felt, then feeling like a white washed tomb. I have prayed for and have been given the gift and now trying to accept it, of not caring what people think. It’s pretty fab. Anyway, now I am accustomed to it. I am not aware of anybody looking at me funny, maybe little kids. I find myself dressing nicer for Mass than I used to, no jeans anymore. I feel like I stick out in most churches in this diocese some anyway, I bow for the part in the Nicene Creed when you are supposed to, kneel after receiving Holy Communion (on the tongue) don’t clap for everybody, etc etc. I think it might be pleasing to all the angels and saints that are there also, so that is one reason why I wear a veil. I sew a little comb in mine, you can get the best deal at Kmart as far a price and colors.

There is one thing I would like to ask about. I went to a NO Mass at a neighboring diocese, there were quite a few women wearing veils, but they wouldn’t do the Sign of Peace and jerked on their kids when they responded to people around them. What’s the deal with that?

Sign of peace is optional, and no one (aside from the priest, I think) is required to do it.

That, and it can disrupt the atmosphere prior to receiving the Eucharist.
 
Women jerking their kids around didn’t do much for creating an atmosphere for receiving the Eucharist. I was embarrassed to be a fellow veil wearer in that company! Oh, well…raising children is hard enough without me criticizing any little thing.

I used to feel awkward, since it does draw attention, but I don’t any longer. Look at it this way, some of those who are staring may start to wonder why you wear your veil, and once they’ve looked into the reason behind it, they may begin to wear one themselves.

Always take the opportunity to be a good example!

I am converting at the mo. RCIA starts in September. I will wear a mantilla to Mass although don’t think I can yet (can I?). I think they look really nice and feel I should. I went to a Catholic Covent School for a few years and wanted to be a nun when I was 10 so maybe that is where it comes from.

I was given a black scarf with sequinned butterflies by a friend but think that is a bit too much (was from Abu Dhabi though) 🙂

If you’re not Baptized yet, you may still wear a veil if you are at Mass.

I did not start wearing one until I went a TLM, but I wear one all of the time now. No matter where I am. TLM or NO.

This is a perfect way to ruin a piece of lace. A veil or mantilla of lace should ONLY be washed by hand and allowed to air dry. Most lace is far too delicate to go in the machine. :tsktsk:

I think your scarf sounds wonderful! I’m sure it would be fine if it’s not too loud - but if it’s mostly black I’m sure it’s ok.

Of course you can cover your head now - it is a lovely practice!!

And - to the OP - don’t worry about what other folks say. I cover my head at any Mass or adoration, mostly with a veil, but sometimes with a small brimmed velvet hat in the winter.

I’ve been covering my head for almost two years now I think - maybe a bit less. I’ve NEVER had anyone say anything nasty to me, only positive comments. Only one time did an EMHC (a woman) give me a VERY strange look when I went up to receive the Precious Blood from her. It was almost as if I made HER very uncomfortable, she hardly could even look at me, and looked almost distraught or angry. But this was at a middle of the road semi-liberal parish where NO ONE would be covering their head.

🤷 Oh well, what can ya do I suppose.

It does draw attention, but then again (depending on the parish) so does being reverent. I wear mine whenever I’m in the nave/chapel…feel sort of naked without it now.

I am currently a seminarian studying for the priesthood. I just want to say that I love that traditional things are coming back into the church. If you wear your veil to mass GREAT! It is a beautiful sign of your faith. I wish that in seminary we could go back to wearing our cassocks for class and mass. But you wear your veil. Remember the first time a woman didn’t wear her veil she was probably looked at, stared at and sneered at! God Bless!

I always veil at the TLM and at Adoration but not at the NO. I think I will now. If Jesus deserves my honor at a TLM and Adoration and He is still the Lord at the NO and I should honor Him the same whether anyone else does or not.
 
I wear a veil at both TLM and the NO. I also wear my veil when I travel and go to other parishes. I have never been aware of any inappropriate attention being drawn to myself. I feel called to try to influence people in my parish and other parishes to be more reverent at Mass and in Church. I always wear a skirt to Church. My Pastor is very supportive.
 
I realize TLM means Traditional Latin Mass, but please tell me what NO means. I am bracing myself for a most obvious answer. Thank you in advance. Catherine

NO stands for Novus Ordo. The New Order of the Mass after Vatican II. It is also called the Ordinary Form of the Mass or OF.

I’ve never understood why some women who cover their heads at the TLM don’t do so at other times when they are in the presence of Christ in the Eucharist for the very reasons you cite. If Jesus is there at the TLM, He is surely just as there at the NO, so why would someone act differently?

So glad to see you have also reached the same conclusion that I have - it does not matter which form of the Mass we attend, Jesus is there just the same. 🙂

They were at the very back of the shop, I asked for them at the little window. The lady had to get it for me, I don’t think they were out on display.
