Wore my veil at the NO today

Hi Again, Ladies,

I have a question that I neglected to ask the last time I posted: Where do you sit when you go to Church? In the front, the middle, or the back of the Church? I think the reason that no one bothers me is because I sit in the second pew from the front and the only people I see are the little ladies that sit in front of me…that and the Altar and Priest,…and Altar Servers. I have no idea what the people behind me are doing or thinking as I don’t see them, so maybe you guys need to move to the front…?

I also sit in the 2nd or 3rd row. I find it less distracting-no fidgeting kids and such (but I do love seeing them go to commumion). I actually have a friend I sometimes go to Mass with but we never sit together. I like as close to the altar as I can and she likes the middle.

Lol. It was the norm to me - every parish I’d ever gone to did it, so when dad started to stop doing it, it was almost insulting. Then he explained it, and mom and I followed his example. I had one lady who actually reached out and grabbed my hand when I didn’t offer it. I could only sigh and go along with it.

When I decided to no longer hold hands during the Our Father, I just clamped my eyes shut, bowed my head and folded my hands in prayer. No one ever had the nerve to interrupt; and in time people got used to it. No one offers me a hand now!

That’s what I was doing, actually, when that lady grabbed my hand Now I’m in a parish where no one does it, praise God.

The grabbing incidents reminded me of something: we were in Mass one day and a lady we had never seen before grabbed ahold of my sister’s hand during the Our Father. My sister does NOT like to be touched; you just don’t do it. :tsktsk: Also, she was quite startled by the lady’s action and let out this kind of SQUEAK. The lady dropped my sister’s hand like it was radioactive and I spent the rest of Mass trying not to laugh.

I wear a headcovering at the NO and no one really notices. My mom used to make comments but largely it was due to the fact that it was a kerchief that didn’t match what I was wearing. She got me another thing so she’s shut up. My grandma is always happy to see me wearing it to mass along with long skirts.

I would say teal is a bit bold; I would go with neutral/subdued colors, black, or white. Nothing too flashy or extravagant, just something simple.

Black or white are the usual colours. My mom has red, baby blue, and pale pink as well. If you’ve got an outfit with a lot of teal in it, I don’t think it would look odd.

That’s hilarious! I’m imagining to myself how the “squeak” must have sounded, and giggling at my keyboard.

We don’t hold hands (thank Heaven!) at my Parish, but at the next parish over they do. It’s not in the rubrics, so no one should do it. When I visited the hand-holding parish, it made me uncomfortable.

I’ve seen teal before; it looked nice and went with her outfit. I have had my eye on a purple one for Lent.

This thread had started right after my daughter (age 10) and I hadf decided to veil for whatever Mass we attend. (we are members of a very liberal parish but the the EF and go as often as we can make my hubby watch the little boys so I can have peace there)
We had ordered ours last weekend and wore them yesterday for the 1st time to the NO and got several great comments from folks we knew and didn’t know) A couple ladies said they have been wanting to wear theirs but were chicken, so I told them to get bold for Jesus. And a little ‘older’ lady who just moved in to our area yakked something at me in ? Italian that I assume was complimentary, so I guess it went well. Our liberal pastor wasn’t there and the one we had was wonderful so it was a great ‘1st time’ for us. My DH shudders at all the ‘new’ trends we start (like taking communion on the tongue- how novel)

Ha! That’s such a great first time to have. It’s nice that you might’ve helped to embolden some of the other women. That’s too bad about your DH, though. Hopefully he’ll get used to it? Hehe. When I told my dad that I’d like to take communion kneeling but have always been chicken about losing my balance getting back up, he told me he’d be right behind me to help me up if I needed it, and he’s done that ever since.

There is a lady that sells them somewhat cheaper after our TLM Mass but she hadn’t had them out for awhile and once I decided I was ready I wanted to do it now…plus the lady here doesn’t have as nice of lace as the one from Hanceville and they got here in 4-5 days.

I have a veil from that seller, I really love it!! Though I have to say that the lace is a bit heavier than some of my old vintage veils (yes, I have quite a collection ) - it is more sturdy and not as easy to snag or rip as the old ones. I need pins to hold it on, not so with the very light old lace - I ordered the large in black, it really is very lovely!

The vintage ones look nice too, but I heard the lace is a lot more fragile and I am rough on materials, so I went with the heavier new stuff. I didn’t have hairpins and it only slid marginally, but will take bobby pins next week for good measure.

Yes - my old ones are pretty fragile - I think I have about six. Two mantilla style and the others are triangles. They are very beautiful, but I save them for special occasions like weddings, funerals, and certain feast days. My newer ones are more the every day toss in your purse type.

Hi All,

I just found this great blog with discussion about veiling:

and thought of you all here discussing veiling.

I like the idea of wearing a veil to Mass, but feel really uncomfortable with the idea that I will probably be drawing attention to myself, which is the opposite intent (modesty and humility before God) of wearing the veil in the first place.

My parish is considered “traditional” by modern standards (which I guess is not saying much!) but I have not observed anyone else veiling. I have seen ladies wearing wool hats, though. But it’s winter, so perhaps that is the reason. There is no vestibule in which to leave coats and hats.

Argh, so I’m not sure wether to “take the plunge” and wear a veil, which seems an appropriate Catholic custom, or not.

I don’t even want to ask Father about it, for fear he will think I"m really weird. I mean, I’m not even officially Catholic yet, although that is what I self-identify as. I don’t want to be the new weirdo convert in my parish.

Thoughts? Words of wisdom?
