Hi,

You are supposed to work on SUNday. Work 6 days, rest on the sabbath, WHICH IS Saturday. Nowhere in the Bible does it say to rest on the 1st day.

You do know that Catholics are not bound to the Bible and we also follow Jesus’ church, don’t you? Why we sould listen to what your cult teaches?

Please do not hijack the thread.

kamz,

I’m in the military and at times have to work on Sunday as well. However, I’m glad my parish offers a Saturday evening Mass which fulfills my Sunday obligation.
That’s a good point. Years ago, I also had to work Sundays, but was not Catholic at that point and unfortunately did not have the option of Saturday services. My pet peeve are retailers who make their clerks work on holidays, and that’s why we try our best to avoid shopping on those days. On the other hand, what about those of us who enjoy going out to eat with friends after Sunday Mass? Is our patronage encouraging the need for those employees to be at work–as opposed to home with their families? Just something to think about…

What about very long, hard work on your own home on Sunday?

I started a major renovation by myself on our own ‘domestic Church’ and it is very close to ‘more than I can chew’. I have been working my *** off, for long hours, on weekends and after work for about 8 weeks now, with about 8 weeks to go. I have not been spending the time with my wife and kids that they’re used to.

We’re saving tens of thousands of $$$, and my wife is helping where she can. She is also supportive of these very necessary renovations.

The problem is I’m working every Sunday from 05:00 until about 21:00, or 16 hours. I do break for Mass, but that’s about it. (I’ve missed mass once)

Father didn’t mention it as a problem in confession, and gave me one of the easiest penance’s on record. Does that mean what I’m doing is OK?

Another poll where I could not choose any of them.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church expresses my view

If I work Mon-Fri, (not Saturdays) at a parish, and the pastor asks me to work in an apostolate as helping with the catechism classes and registartion of the kids for religion classes etc, (from 9:00AM-12:00PM, all the while I am actually getting paid, thank God) how do you view this??? I mean I could not say no, I needed the work, and extra pay as well, and I did major in religion with a degree in that. Otherwise In would not have any other chance to SPREAD the faith as well.
Any other opinions here?? What would you guys do??? Is this a good thing I am doing???. GREAT pastor/orthodox by the way too.

Our Lady of La Salette wept over this one.

I personally would not work on a Sunday, …if I was at all worried abo, I would discuss it with my priest.

I think that helping with a catechism class at church (whether you are paid or not) is part of what celebrating the Lord’s Day is all about. You are helping others learn about God and advancing the faith. The basic work/activities prohibition is against work or activities “that hinder the worship owed to God.”

As others have commented too, work that is necessary such as caring for the sick or keeping communities safe (fireman and policeman) must carry on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Even Jesus healed the sick on the Sabbath.
As for others who work on Sunday at jobs we may consider “unnecessary”, we must remember that God understands the need to provide and care for our families. God doesn’t expect us to quit our jobs and become homeless because our employers make us work on Sundays. Of course it’s best to try to find a job where one doesn’t have to work on Sunday or at least works very few Sundays. But that is not possible for everyone. It is a sad statement on our society today that stores, restaurants and all kinds of entertainment are expected to be open on Sunday. As several others have posted here, we can do our best to avoid shopping and going to restaurants on Sunday.
One thing we can do to help those in our lives who must work on Sunday is to welcome them home on Sunday as if we are welcoming them to a Christmas dinner. We can be especially sympathetic toward their plight and do our best to provide a meal and a relaxing time for them when they get home from work/or before they leave for work Sunday afternoon. We can extend this charitable effort (as our holy mission) to helping them have the best possible Sunday/Lord’s Day that they can in spite of their work.
God bless all those who have to work on Sundays. May we all set aside a little time to honor God and appreciate our families even when we have to work on the Lord’s Day.

I work Monday thru Friday. The weekends are when I do “extra” stuff. Generally, though, I leave time to just enjoy nature, by going for a walk. I live in the city and i try finding nature in people’s gardens or windowboxes.Sometimes I walk in the cemetary to really enjoy the quiet. And then lots of times I sit on my back step and just read.

This is a commandment, not an option. Who said following God’s law was a piece of cake, and if it isn’t for you, then by all means, make your own rules? Thousands of years had Sunday as the Lord’s Day, but now, it’s just like any other day, only we go to Church for an hour first. Our society has reckless habits, indeed.

My husband is a Paramedic and must work some Sundays. He is NOT committing a sin. I bet if you had a heart attack & called 911 and nobody came and the hospitals all closed you’d be complaining and upset. I consider his work an “important social service” read CCC #2185.

May God bless him, and all the others like him who are in most ‘important social service.’

I have always struggled with this commandment. I keep going back to the fact that this is the only commandment that begins with the word " remember the Sabbath and keep it holy".

Sounds like to me That God knew we would forget.

Like I said it’s been a struggle with me. I don’t work weekends now and thats a good thing. I try to keep Sat. and Sun. free of work outside of my home.

Housework, gardening, cooking, being with family, attending birthday parties, ect. seem ok with me.

I am confused about this and pray for the right answere.

I love it when this thread pops on a long weekend for me. I am working 40 hours this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I don’t feel so alone in this problem. Fortunately on this current shift I can make Saturday vigil Mass. This is not always the case and I always treasure the Sunday liturgy more when I have to miss a week.

I found this thread intriguing because I struggle with it alot. I desire to attend Sunday obligations, but work in a job that oft-times keeps me from that obligation. I am an oilfield worker and am away 2 weeks ata time, so I miss mass at least twice a month. I go to confession when I return and my priest tells me that it is venial sin since my work prevents me from attending. Often times however, I feel very guilty for not attending and I wonder what my obligations truly are…and it is somewhat of a struggle to think I’m putting my family (i.e. working to support them) before God.
