Worst song ever?

Well, the one I am thinking about is not a single, as far as I know. It’s a song in a current commercial for the series Friday Night Lights.

The lyrics are, “I was livin’ in a devil town. Oh Lord, the devil town, brings me down,” or something like that. The melody is ridiculous and the song (and commercial) is so annoying to me that I turn the channel when I see the commercial come on.

Other than that, there are too many bad songs to remember here.

Hey, I like ‘Saftey Dance’!

I mean at least it’s not that song by ChumbaWhumba…

Hey, I quite like that Chumbawumba song (it’s called ‘Tubthumping’ by the way), although I concede it’s sounds best when one is in a state of at least mild intoxication, in a large group, at full volume.

Actually, I like it too-- it’s on my playlist for strenous activity, like bump skiing.

But you aren’t supposed to name it, or quote it: you just say Chumbawhumba, and people who aren’t terribly familar with it pause for a minute, trying to think what it is-- they can feel it coming like a truck through an intersection, but can’t quite make it out-- then, WHAM!!! IGETKNOCKEDDOWNBUTIGETUPAGAIN…

Kind of a fun effect, really.

I may be repeating someone else, but my least favorite of all time is:

“Feeeeelings, woe woe woe feeli-ings.” (spelling of “woe” is deliberate!)

Also any country, disco, punk, hip-hop, (etc etc) re-recording of anything Motown. I’ll take my Motown straight, thanks. The same applies to the Beatles and the Beach Boys. No new covers, please!

I’ll generally agree with you in principle. Altho’ the exception that I believe proves the rule is Nick Cave’s version of “Let It Be”, which I think was excellently done.

I’m going to go with just about anything on the Top 40 radio station right now, but I am currently annoyed by:

No Air by Jordan Sparx
The one about how her divorce has made her so happy, by Pink
The one about how it’s just great that sometimes she’s a super B#@$#@, by Christina Aguilera

Thankfully, the Alvin and the Chipmunks album isn’t too grating, so my daughter and I listen to that in the car together. 🙂

I’m starting to sound like my mother!! 😃

'Imagine" by John Lennon.
I know, John Lennon was a great songwriter, but every time I hear “Imagine” or one of his similar songs, I feel like whacking the radio. I strongly dislike how people are so obsessed with it. Even Rain, which is supposed to be a Beatles tribute band, played it on one of those annoying PBS fund raiser thingies.

Yeah. I want to make it clear that when I say “Beatles,” I mean the Fab Four, not their various recordings after the break-up. Lennon did write some good music, but his lyrics - feh!

And I have heard some decent covers of some Beatles tunes - but I tend to think they’re decent because it’s hard to ruin great music. Of course, none of the covers I liked were breathy, howled, whined, off-tempo, or off-key. Nor did they change the rhythm or mess with the chord chart.

Even the Beatles had a few I didn’t like, though not to the point of a “worst ever” list. (Like, “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.”) But the same goes for any musicians. I’ve only had one album I loved every single song on - Earth Music, by the Youngbloods. (When did Neil Young get so whiny?)

God bless us all,

Ruthie

Omygosh, yes - Midnight at the Oasis. That’s close to the top in my book and I’d (mercifully) forgotten it.

Also, add California Dreamin’ by the M&P’s; it’s just slightly enough off-key it makes my vocal chords ache trying to get them back up where they should be.
Love California Dreamin’

“I’d like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony …” … yeccccch. The most irritating ditty ever recorded.

Although I am a HUGE Beatle’s fan, they have several songs which could be nominated:

This Boy (A Hard Days Night)
Revolution #9 (White Album)
Don’t Pass Me By (White Album)
Wild Honey Pie (WHite Album)
The Continuing Adventures of Bungalow Bill (White Album)
Act Naturally (Help!)

I guess this makes The White Album the most overrated album of all time

Number nine. Number nine. Number nine. Number nine. Number nine. Repeat until you feel like chucking something at the speakers. 😛

Whilst a few of the Beatles’ songs listed are weird/overrated (agreed with “Revolution #9”), I strongly disagree with a few of your choices there. I like “Don’t Pass Me By” and “Act Naturally”; Ringo makes those songs worthwhile just with his straight-faced British singing (indeed, he wrote “Don’t Pass Me By”; it was the first of two songs he wrote on his own that were recorded by the Beatles, the other one being “Octopus’ Garden”). And “The Continuing Adventures of Bungalow Bill” is funny because it’s silly.

Beatles tracks I dislike? Hmm…well, I can think of a few overrated ones. “I Me Mine” is apparently hailed as a George Harrison classic, but the lyrics and music are nothing special, and the song itself is both too short and too repetitive. “Another Girl” is another low spot - as with most Beatles’ songs, it has a nice, catchy melody, but the lyrics advocate abandoning one’s girlfriends whenever someone prettier comes along  .

I actually think “I Me Mine” is a rather well written blues-ballad-thingie. It’s a bit repetitive because Phil Spector copied a section and added overdubs. I don’t quite interpret “Another Girl” quite as negatively as you do. The line “Another girl who will love me till the end; through thick and thin she will always be my friend” sounds to me like the guy was cheated on. But I do think the part of the movie where they use the song was rather unnecessary.

Oh I still tear up at the remembrance of the original commercial. But then I cry at Folger’s ads – “Peter! You’re home!”
