Last year someone sent me a meme on Facebook comparing the lyrics of a Nicki Minaj song (which you can thank me for not posting here) and “Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin. Now the Nicki Minaj song they quoted is a terrible in every aspect, and I love Zeppelin; but the person who put together the meme was trying to paint with a broad brush saying old=good and new=bad.

I replied with the lyrics from a song from the same year as Stairway. Some of you folks in my age range or older may remember “Fly Robin Fly” by Silver Convention. The lyrics (repeated 3 times) are as follows:

Fly, robin fly
Fly, robin fly
Fly, robin fly
Up, up to the sky

So apart from that, I have one more song that I heard once and got legitimately angry about. Mary J. Blige covered “You’re All I Need to Get By” (originally by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell). Hearing what I consider one of the most beautiful modern songs get destroyed and its message distorted was too much. On its own the cover would just be merely awful, but when compared to the amazing source material they strayed from makes it one of the worst songs to me.

Wuh uh oh oh oh, lol.

Same can be said about new “country” artists. Everything sounds the same. Rap country, their girl is cool or beautiful and drinks like a guy and wears a baseball cap. Country whoop.

I have a feeling that the reason why people say that older music is better is because the garbage from that era that may have been popular for two seconds has had enough time to fade into obscurity.

I have a feeling it’s for two reasons:
  1. nostalgic feeling for their youth
  2. more actual instruments and instrumental prowess on display in the old stuff as opposed to the electronic processing, sampling, beats etc. that dominate the newer stuff.

We sang Beatles songs at Mass in grammar school twice. It only occurred to me in high school that that was probably inappropriate.

Never liked them too much.

Everything they did before rubber soul was just music for teenage girls. In fact if it weren’t for Elvis and the Beatles there probably would be no Justin Bieber today

Gucci Gang by Lil Pump.
Repeats the title of the song over fifty times and includes such gems like “Me and my grandma take meds” and “your mom still sleep in a tent”.
And it is somewhat stuck in my head too.

I think there is some truth to this. But, I also think there were a lot more really talented musicians. If you go back far enough people had to entertain themselves. So lots of folks could sing and play instruments. This was true for all different classes of people. And until not long ago plenty of people learned music, especially to sing, from church.

I guess everyone has forgotten the abysmal “MacArther’s Parl” and the horrid “Muskrat Love”.

ewwwwwww

both sooooooo creepy. 😒

What’s the matter pianistclare, did someone leave your cake out in the rain with all the sweet cream icing flowing down? 🎂

I dislike 99% of Anything after the 90’s. I prefer music from the 50s 60s and some 70s. I don’t even seek out listening to anything new because anytime I hear something new I never like it. With the exception of “Redbone” by childish gambino. That’s the song, not the 70s group.

With that said, I use to listen to the oldies station as a kid (oldies stations now only play 80s music) and they use to constantly play “you lost that loving feeling” by the righteous brothers. It was such Popular Song apparently but I could never figure out why. I hated that song. I have not heard it in many years so I don’t know how I would feel now if I heard it but I hated it as a kid and teenager.
