I could write a list a mile long of “worst songs”…but I won’t.
The 3 I despise the most (all competing for first place) are:

Que Sera Sera by Doris Day
99 Balloons by Nena
Piece of My Heart by Janis Joplin
…better not to come over for a party at my place then…😉

The cheesiest song I can think of is “Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Bonnie Tyler. It’s so bad that it’s good though, and I can’t go to karaoke without singing it.

Turn around, Bright Eyes.
I love that song. I like most of Jim Steinman’s big hit songs – big, bombastic, anthemic, over-the-toip, angsty, with choirs and motorcycles.

You’ll probably hate these, too:

“Holding Out For A Hero”, Bonnie Tyler
“It’s All Coming Back To Me Now”, Celine Dion
“Making Love Out Of Nothing At All”, Air Supply
“Read 'Em And Weep”, Barry Manilow
“I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That)”, “Paradise By The Dashboard Light”, “Bat Out Of Hell”, “Two Out Of Three Ain’t Bad” by Meat Loaf

I am beginning to think that the wildly successful and tremendously talented songsters out there have one very bad song to their otherwise stellar repetoire.

Even my boys…Yes, my boys.

ACTUALLY, NO. let me clarify. THEY and the song are great. It’s the darned “ching” from the fake Partridge family background that is SOOOOO annoying…

I’ll think of really bad songs, don’t you worry…

First of all, I just spotted this thread, so I may be restating what others have already posted because I don’t have time presently to read the entire thing, but here goes:

ANYTHING by Bobby Goldsboro but ESPECIALLY “Honey” & the all-time worst syrupy insulin-shock inducing piece of insipid nonsense: “Watching Scotty Grow”

“The Cheater” (is this not one of the whiniest breakup songs of all-time?)
“MacArthur Park”
“Three Little Pigs” (although I get the satire at the end)
“Tell Laura I Love Her”
“Last Kiss”
“Patches” (FYI—I can tolerate SOME songs about dead teens, but these three are especially ridiculous to me! I can deal with “Hello This Is Joanie”)
“Puppy Love” (My sister had the biggest crush on Donny Osmond)
“Soulja Boy” (yeah I know that’s not the real title, but you all know which one I mean)

Okay this should be a start.

“It’s all about that bass” by whatever her name is,
Some song by Puddle of Mudd that comes on the radio a lot, don’t remember the name.

I think the Happy song also goes here. I know a lot of people liked it in the beginning, and there may not be anything inherently wrong with the melody. But the repetitiveness was really a turn off for me, especially after the 603rd time that I heard it on the radio.

Also any Katie Perry song might fit in this category. I really dislike music by Bastille as well. Macklemore too, all of his songs. And most of those hip-hop “artists” like Kanye West and the rest.

Are you referring to “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” by Bobby McFerrin (that song has grown on me over the years) or the recent one by Pharell Williams - I’m assuming it’s the latter.

Don’t Worry be Happy is one of my favorite songs.

Not because of the song being great or anything like that. It was out when I was a late teen. When I was in the car with my dad, the song would come on and he would sort of sing along.

My dad had a thick Italian accent, and the only part of the song he would sing was “Be Happy.” It was just silly and I would get the giggles.

Recently, my son was hospitalized for about 5 months, 4 months in a rehab hospital. A number of his specialist visits were out of the hospital, so he would be transported via ambulance. On the way to one of the visits, I was worried about what the findings would be. The ambulance driver was listening to the radio, and “Don’t Worry be Happy” came on.

I smiled, and remembered my Dad. He passed away 17 years ago, and the song made me think that maybe he had his grandson in his prayers.

I wish I had as nice a story as yours to tell about the song, but I just kind of like the melody and its ‘evergreen’ quality. Also if you listen to the lyrics enough times you realize there’s some nuance to the song that wasn’t always obvious to me in the 1980’s.

These classics were all meant to tug at our heart-strings. Have you never suffered longing or loss? It seems to me you haven’t a sentimental bone in your body :D.

“See the tree, how big its grown, the first day that she planted it, 'twas just a twig”
From Honey, by Bobby Goldsboro.
I’m tearing up now just from writing it :bighanky:

Of course I feel sentiment, but NOT when it’s FORCED. Granted, maybe the songs remind me of the movies, but I still tear up listening to Henry Mancini’s “Days Of Wine & Roses” as well as the closing song from “Paths Of Glory” which I dare most people not to tear up in at the end. However, that’s another thread if anybody wants to start it.

“Don’t Worry, Be Happy” and “I Believe I Can Fly”, and 99% of rap “songs”. Sorry, rap fans. To me, they are as mind-numbing as bouncing basketballs. 🤷
