there are so many beautiful wedding songs that could be played during the ceremony or the first dance,i like the most : Lily was here - Candy Dulfer Dave Stewart

Just reading some of this and…wow, some of these songs were actually played in a Catholic church during a wedding Mass?

When I get married in June, my fiancee and I are not having any kind of pop music whatsoever during or around the Mass. Canon in D will be used as a prelude, we’ll have Ave Maria as we are honoring our Blessed Mother with flowers during the Mass, etc.

As far as the reception, there will be a very large “banned” list for our DJ. She put the whole category of rap on that list.

One song I’ve never understood couples using for a first dance song in Garth Brooks’ The Dance. Hello, it’s a breakup song people!

I can’t recall any really bad songs during a wedding, but I heard some that raised the hairs on the back of my neck during receptions. We went to one shortly after we got married and the first song the wedding party danced to was Should I Stay Or Should I Go by the Clash.

We were at one reception where they played Why Don’t We Get Drunk… by Jimmy Buffet not once, not twice, but three times! We’d have left if our son had been with us at the time.

At another reception, all they played was Led Zeppelin. Most everyone was in the mood to dance and have fun, but instead the lights were turned down real low and the wedding party sat over in the corner. To paraphrase Three Dog Night, those cigarettes they were smoking 'bout scared me half to death. We didn’t stay long at that one.

At our reception, we gave the DJ a list of songs we wanted played, and even gave him a stack of CD’s to make sure he had each of them. He played a few of our CD’s before we arrived, but after we got there the only song from our list that he played was the song for our first dance (he even played the wrong songs for the father-daughter dance and mother-son dance). There were several songs that we didn’t want played. Having been to several events he’d DJ’d, we knew were favorites of his and we made a point of telling him we didn’t want to hear those songs. Even though we told him not to play them, he managed to squeeze in each and every one of them, including I’m Too Sexy by Right Said Fred. Instead of enjoying my reception, (among other things) I got to make at least seven trips to the DJ station to question/argue with him over the music selection. At least three people refused to use him as the DJ for their weddings after hearing about ours.

I had some minor surgery this past fall. I’m friends with a few of the people in the operating room at the hospital where I work, and Jimmy Buffet’s legendary “Why don’t we get drunk…” was what they serenaded me with just before the anesthesiologist did his thang! I suppose I had to take it in the spirit in which it was offered, but it wasn’t all that reassuring to someone who is about to go under the knife!

I still hold that “Here Comes the Bride” is one of the worst wedding pieces I’ve ever heard. I have a large extended family, and got pressed into bridesmaid duty seventeen times. I’m not kidding. One of the brides was very obese, and as we processed two by two down the aisle, my mind kept sticking in the words “big, fat, and wide.” Uncharitable, I know, but I really couldn’t help it: You could have safely parachuted with that dress she was wearing! And ever since that wedding, “big, fat and wide” still pops into my head whenever I hear it played!

The sappy seventies pieces? Puh-leeze! Some of them were so sugary I felt I needed insulin after listening to them! Most of the lyrics were so annoying, and not at all representative of what Christian marriage should be.

I love classical music, and think that most brides should stick to those, or sacred music. If you’re going to spend a small fortune to wear a dress to make yourself look like your own conception of a fairy princess, go with something regal, not with something that sounds like it should be performed at a country bar! However, some of the ill-advised weddings I’ve been to really should have had Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries,” (the music used in the helicopter assault scene of “Apocalypse Now,”) or the overture of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony as processionals. Or perhaps Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor. That would be “truth in advertising!”

Of course, the contemporary generation of brides doesn’t consult me for my opinion, which is probably worth about as much as they’d pay for it! So—live and let live.

My own wedding had Clarke’s “Prince of Denmark March” (also known as the Trumpet Voluntary) as the processional, and used an elaborate organ prelude of “Praise to the Lord” as the recessional. We had wanted Handel’s “Water Music,” but the organist wasn’t comfortable with the chord riffs in it.

DD had to get the priest’s permission for this music as it wasn’t “churchy” enough
but as they were supplying the musicians (church had nobody but amateur guitarists) they called the shots. They were in a brass ensemble at the time and really wanted the first one

What’s wrong with Disney songs? I think they’re beautiful, and it seems harshly cruel for you to be judging that. Didn’t you ver stop and think maybe they mean something special to the couple?

I was married in September and my entrance song was Now I See The Light from Tangled. Go ahead and think it’s cheesy and laugh, but as a girl who grew up isolated by an overzealous grandmother, who had no friends, no connections and no real family until my prince arrived to free me and teach me how to enjoy the world, it was perfect.

In other words, **** YOU.

All-time worst reception/first dance song? “The Lady is a Tramp,” a la Frank Sinatra.

shudder

The wedding itself? Oh, how about “Purple Rain” for the bridesmaids’ processional because (oh, how…cute…) the bridesmaids were wearing–you guessed it–purple.

Wow. Isn’t that a little harsh? I was totally in agreement with you, even happy for you, until I read the last line. :tsktsk: Uncalled for…

If I have to sing “Annie’s Song” by John Denver at a wedding again I will throw up. (…you fill up my senses, like a night in the forest…)
OR even more putrid, “Sunrise, Sunset” from the musical “Fiddler on the Roof”. LOL

White Wedding by Billy Idol. Still like the song just not a good one for weddings.

This thread is inspired by the discussion of “Here Comes the Bride”. What do think would be (or you have actually heard) the worst Wedding song ever?

I’m thinking maybe like that one with the lyric “love cuts like a knife”.

Any other suggestions?
That song Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow sing. What’s it called?

I can’t look at you while I’m lying with him… or whatever. That would be the worst wedding song ever.

Followed by the creepy stalker song: Every move you make,
every breath you take,
every single day I’ll be watching you.

CREEPY STALKER. Why are you marrying a creepy stalker???

Edited to Add: I haven’t heard the first song in a wedding but I hear the second song in weddings all the time and I just hate it. I really think it’s cringe worthy not romantic at all.

I got really fortunate here: The priest who married us was an old friend of mine from high school days, and my overworked pastor had no problem letting him officiate at our nuptial Mass. Our pastor did review the musical selections, and had no problem with them either.

Our wedding service had traditional Catholic mass music and “Here comes the Bride” was not played - our priest has banned it in weddings he performs.

The wedding reception was another story. Bob Seger’s C’est La Vie was the first song.

Don’t know if I should bump this up but I’ve encountered some pretty awful music at weddings (both the ceremony and reception).

For my best friend’s wedding last year, her recessional was “Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life”. Love the song but kinda odd for a recessional. I was expecting it for the last song at the reception.

At a few weddings I’ve attended, I’ve heard “Everything I Do” as an interlude. If there’s a Bryan Adams song I’m can’t stand, it’s that one.

And then I’ve attended weddings when either there’s no dancing or everything was Christian Pop. At my cousin’s wedding in 2006, it was nothing but gospel and Christian Pop. Kinda hard to dance to anything to that.

Worst I’ve ever heard was at a my mom’s friend’s wedding when the bride walked down to “The Power Of Love” and her first dance was “I Will Always Love You”.

Don’t hate me for this but my fiance and I are planning to enter the reception to either The Cure “Just Like Heaven” or The Flaming Lips “Race For The Prize”. He’s loves both bands.
