My Grandma and I were talking the other night about life issues such as abortion and then cloning. Anyway we were wondering if a clone would have a soul. You see it is our belief that a soul is given to a human the moment of conception. But what if it is a clone that is created via scientific means and not through God’s natural plan? Does it then not get a soul?

I don’t think there is an actual for sure answer out there but I am interested in hearing peoples opinions on the subject. It is a facinating thought.

Yes it has a soul. As do IVF children. As do both identical twins in a pair. God is very generous, regardless of the stupid things his children do.🙂

Theologically speaking, it is not possible for a person to exist without having both a body and an immortal soul.
Therefore the question is that of whether a clone would indeed be a person. This is no different than if a dead corpse were to be brought back to life as in Frankenstein, it is a material ‘body’ but absent of an immortal soul. It would be asking if God would infuse a soul into a body such as a dead corpse brought back to life through unnatural means apart from the usual male/female pro-creation relationship.

That’s a very good question. My view is that if a person, whether he/she is created through cloning, IVF or some other artificial means, as long as that being has the capacity to love and honor Him, then the Holy Spirit does reside in that person, and he/she does indeed have a soul.

But a clone may not have that capacity. No one knows the answer to that one.

this question bothers me too… i would think that it must have some sort of soul, but it may be like the soul of a monkey or dog, just a little higher. it may be that God grants it an immortal soul. i think that the only way to know would be to examine a clone (which of course cannot be done because it would mean that we cloned human life and that is a no-no) and see if it was capaple of love, virtue, conscience, philosophy and that sort of thing. a soul of a clone-man may be so like our own that it may be hard to tell the difference. it is good to keep in mind that if if it does not have an immortal human soul, then it is not human. I really hope that we never have to answer this question through experiance

ps- this is really a good question for philosophy- there are different types of souls, and not all of them immortal. personhood is a broader issue too

I still would like to again point our that, yes a clone would have a soul. The Lord might not bless the manner of conception…be it cloning, in vitro, artificial insemination or even extra marital relations, or pre marital relations.

But every human being is created in God’s likeness, and every human being has a soul.

i hope they have a soul!!! it’s scary to think a person could live without a soul…then again cloning is scary to think about too!!

I would think a clone does have a soul because is it not the soul that gives us life…? is the soul not the very breath of God in us?
Even if a person was un-naturally and immorally conceived if its alive it would (in my opinion) have a soul.

Frankly, we already have the biological equivalent of clones right now… they’re called identical twins. In essence, a man-made clone is the creation of an identical twin that’s just many years removed in time. (Well, more or less.) If twins have souls, why not clones?

“Would a human clone have a soul?”

Yes…but it would be a cloned soul, e.g., a ‘franken’ soul.😃

For some reason, this makes me think of that show Weird Science!
It’s funny that “Wyatt” proposed that we “make one and find out” - wasnt’ that the guy’s name in the movie, too?

I believe that a clone would have a soul.

In the Apocalypse St. John describes "… the evil leader and his power and (paraphraising) the people will worship the beast AND the image of the beast…’

many believe the “image of the beast” is his clone.

so then to you what is the soul…doesn’t the soul give us life along with our understanding our will which makes us different from animals

well my opinion is our soul (our life) is the very breath of God

If a body can be cloned can the soul be cloned as well? Isn’t this playing God? IMO, if a clone of a human ever happens the cloned body will be animated by evil spirit(s) same as possession …only to a GREATER degree.

Cloning is not of God.

Cloning is a way the devil can be “incarnated.”

Think about it.

This is starting to sound like some of those B-horror films from the 1950’s & 1960’s …

" … having no mother & father but created in a lab test tube, she had no soul and was driven by pure evil … "
