I would NEVER attend a parish where the OF Mass was referred to as the “novus ordo” or “n.o.” mass. So while the opening frame of the video is fine, it’s YouTube name is repugnant.

You probably need an option for those who would prefer the Mass to be more reverential, (incense, traditional music, vestments, etc.) but who wish it in the vernacular. Choosing "I would not attend this Mass, I like my Mass just the way it is", is not an accurate choice as I would like to see some changes in the Mass I regularly attend. They just don’t happen to be the changes suggested in the link you provided. Give me a Mass that looks and sounds like an Anglican-use High Mass but is versus populum and that would be the perfect Mass for me.

I don’t think those things can make a Mass more “reverent.” They can make a Mass more solemn though.

To some on here, they are one in the same. Reverent is defined in various dictionaries as: Feeling or showing deep and solemn respect. In that light, I feel quite comfortable in my use of the word reverent above. One of the possible definitions of solemn is: Formal and dignified.

I have no problem with the use of either word.

I would rather attend their Solemn High Anglican Use Mass. At this time the CDF are working on a new liturgy, which hopefully will be very close to the TLM, but in the vernacular.

As to the congregations interaction in AU liturgies, yes the congregation has a very strong role in the prayers i.e. Gloria, Santus, Creed etc., except when the music for these parts are in Latin and the chior plays a more prominent role.

Anglican Use parishes are allowed to celebrate the EF, OF and Anglican Use liturgies.

The new translation of the Roman Rite will be much closer to much of the AU Mass.

Didn’t your mommy ever tell you that life isn’t fair.

At the end of the day, the Anglican Use High Mass is based off of the Latin TLM from the 16th century. All you have to do is translate the pre-vatican II Missal into French or Polish and you will be good to go!

I personally prefer the Gloria, and the Sanctus in Latin, the Kyrie in Greek and the rest in the vernacular.

I understand it is not the PC thing to say, but why do you get so angry at that? Is the definition of Novus Ordo insulting?

Yesterday I went to a solemn high mass for the feast of Saint James. I won’t call it a novus order church so as not to ruffle feathers but they usually have mass in the OF.

The group doing the EF mass was a visiting traditional group. During the celebrant’s homily he spoke of how the church gives us different rites and forms and how it’s all good. He said there is the extraordinary form and the novus order. Immediately I thought of this forum. No one seemed to care.

Yep, and many others. That is part of what makes the Catholic Church truly universal in nature and scope. Its one of the many things that makes me glad to be Catholic.

I know some of the Orders are starting to practice their rites again and that the Ambrosian rite is being celebrated again. I am all for bringing all of these old rites back and maintaining them, particularly for different cultures. Allowing our local cultures to influence the rites organically over the centuries helps to make the liturgy meaningful to the people in those cultures. As long as they are reverent and conducted properly, I think it is a wonderful thing and it shows the true Catholic nature of the Church.

I think this mass is absolutely awesome. I also believe it may be the form of the mass that is being celebrated 100 years from now – the so-called future hybrid mass that some allude to.

Gorgeous OF Mass

If this mass were less than a mile from your home, how many of you who attend the OF or EF would be happy celebrating a mass such as this every Sunday?

Mass in our parish is just as beautiful. A few weeks ago, Trinity Sunday, the priest was incensing the altar and the sun was coming through the Lamb of God rose window in the sanctuary casting streams of colored light down around the altar as the incense swirled up highlighting the colorful rays. It was beautiful, as usual. But on that day there was a little girls behind me about 4 years old who said, “Mommy why is there a rainbow inside the church?”

The seminarians I study with have to do the basics of Latin but it is a very soft course and only goes for 6 months.

I doubt they’d be able to do it, additionally, the congregational resposes Ive heard at most Latin Masses Ive seen/ heard/ been to leave a lot to be desired.

Exactly.

In real life that is really the term I hear. “Novus Ordo”. Also, I rarely hear regular parishioners say extraordinary form. I hear them say Latin mass or Tridentine Mass.

That’s a problem that is fixable. Vatican II made it clear that the Bishops were responsible for making sure that all Catholics knew the common prayers in Latin. Some Bishops did that; others did not. Just because some Bishops were disobedient, doesn’t mean the language of the Mass should be abandoned.

Fortunately, it appears from the video that someone is taking Vatican II to heart since all those kids seem to know the responses in Latin.

FWIW, the amount of Latin used for responses in a typical Mass isn’t that much and is pretty easy to follow. I did it when I was five years old and first learning to read.
