Would you be willing to cut your cable cord?

The Great Cable Cord Cut:

I have been reading threads about morally offensive tv programming. Some of those include: ER, The Book of Daniel, Desperate Housewives, South Park, the list goes on.

Sure, we can write letters here and there, complaining about content in programming or commercials, we can turn it off, but it doesnt’ make much of a dent. Are Christians getting what we pay for? Do we continue to pay for it? Do we have a moral obligation to not pay for it?

If we are serious about change? There needs to be an organized boycott throughout the Christian community of cancelling Cable or satellite subscribtions for one year with a carefully chosen list of shows that we would like to see removed, and possibly sold to HBO or Movie channels. They would fit in well with Six Feet Under, The L. Word, etc. If not removed from local channels we will continue the boycott, only to watch acceptable sitcoms, movies etc. on DVD or video. That would seriously hit the pocketbook.

If we really wanted to make a change, we would do that. Are Americans that tough? Could we go without the Boob toob for that long? Can we go without the lulling, hypnotizing, sedating effect of mindless tv, and only rent/ borrow/ buy the DVDs that are thought provoking and morally sound?

There is a market for immoral and God-mocking entertainment, let it be on special cable channels so that we have a choice of whether we want to pay for it. I’m not proposing we burn books or DVDs or Cable boxes. I am proposing that consumers have more choice. I would like to see local programming and basic cable, be less offensive so that we dont’ have to pay for it, let the blatantly offensive material go to special cable providers, if consumers want that programming they can order it. Let the consumer consume what they want, rather than buying it only to turn it off.

I want freedom. Shouldn’t consumers have a say as to what we want to pay for, what we want to promote with our hard- earned dollars? We wouldn’t be forcing censureship, but refusing to promote programming we do not find acceptable or entertaining. That is simply smart shopping.

As many people say, “If you don’t like it, turn it off.” I agree, but I say “If you don’t like it, don’t pay for it.”

As a solution, Perhaps Catholic Video store owners could join forces to create a “netflix” mail order DVD business which carries only Christian- friendly DVDs… And all you people hooked on Soap Operas could give them up for lent… and the folks who like to watch football or other sports would have to invite yourselves over to a friend’s house, LOL. Think of how much more time we would have to spend with family and in the community of we didn’t have endless hours of tv to watch. If I do this I will get my news from the internet, and rent DVDs.

I know many people who actually save money by not paying for Cable or satellite, but rent sitcom series and movies on DVD. They see more of what they actually like, and don’t pay for any of the garbage.

At Catholic Answers in the Family forum, I started a thread about American Girl, several of us members started a boycott, We were effective at contacting other Pro-life, Pro-family groups, and the American Girl boycott went National. I will probably cut the cable on my own, for my own family… would anyone care to join me?

I have two questions:
  1. Would any of you be willing to cut the cord for one year as an experiment?
  2. Regardless of whether you could do it…What is your top ten list of the tv shows you wish were not on basic cable?
(*not including *shows on HBO, cinamax or the movie channel PayPer View etc.)

No, because there are a lot of good shows. And they are not on cable.

now boycotting sponsors…that might get something done.

I am going to rent those good shows on DVD, and save the $60 per month I am paying for very little good programming, to put toward only the good programming.

I would boycott sponsors too, but there are so many to boycott!

I have already taken a step towards this by removing all premium channel services from my cable. My family now gets basic cable. If things continue as they are, I might have to take another step. I am hoping that the push for consumers to have control over which cable channels they pay for will become a reality sometime soon.

I think your propition is poorly thought out, and would have the opposite effect than the one you intend.

With a single exception, all the morally offensive shows that you list are not cable shows, so cutting the cable would have no effect on the broadcasters (the vast majority of which do not receive payment from the cable providers). Cutting the cable would, though, take away ETWN and other religious programming, first from my home and eventually from the everyone’s home.

My cable box and my PVR silently report every show I watch to the people who crunch numbers. If a significant number of conservative Christians were cut the cable, what the providers will see is a drop in viewership for these wholesome channels. If the wholesome channels no longer bring in customers, why would the providers continue to carry them? They’d be better served by cutting EWTN and other and replacing them with “The Gay Channel”.

I don’t have cable or satelite and haven’t for 3 years now. I’ve been doing just fine without it. If something disgusting comes on regular TV, we watch DVDs or rent a movie.

I have already done so! I finally got sick of the general low quality programming all around, the continuos price increases and the fact that I did not want to explain to my son what erectile dysfunction was before we even talked about sex!

Peace,

George

Yes, in a few months (after the Soccer World Cup 😛 ) when our contract expires, the Dish and Cable are history!! I am so glad that we put off getting the TiVo for about a month–because then we realized that we didn’t NEED to be able to tape one thing and watch another. And it gave us time to make the decision to ditch the dish and cut the cable when the contract expires.

Talking of cutting the cable makes me think of cutting a baby’s umbilical cord! Isn’t that what it has become for most Americans?? They don’t think they can survive without it, but when they do cut it, they discover a whole new world “outside of TV.”

How does one determine which channels they are paying for, and which they are getting for free? Let’s say a particular channel makes a profit from its advertising. The more eyeballs they get on their channel, the more sponsors will pay for advertising. So, it is in the interest of that channel to pay cable companies to give their channel to subscribers.

The economic situation varies from one channel to another. One obviously pays for premium channels since they have no commercials, and hence no advertising revenue.

But does anyone think they actually pay for the Shopping Network?

Those are the extremes, but it is impossible to tell what we pay for without having acces to the financial info for both the channel and the cable company.

I wouldn’t give up cable because it’s the only way you can get a decent picture for the supposed “free” channels.

There are more important things to organize than a group of Christians that while not admitting it outloud are actually for CENSORSHIP …arguing that theres too many unwashed out there who simply are too stupid and will fall for everything and lose their faith, so WE who know best are doing it for their good. Nope…I will never side with Christians over this matter.

The REMOTE and the V-CHIP are the great equalizers when it comes to ratings and content.

Cut the cable about 2 years ago and regular TV as well. We’re strickly on DVD’s and VHS. No regrets.

Cut the cable here, too. And the regular TV. We still get a few public channels but almost never have the TV on now. Don’t miss it in the least!

We use to be so wrapped up in TV shows and needing to follow the characters. Now we don’t have a clue. And we’re free to be wrapped up in books and music and games and family. Life is much quieter and peaceful and content now!

(Good analogy CatholicSam!)

i would be lost without ewtn. i wish i could cut the cable cord and send the money i pay for cable each month to ewtn. that is what i would do if i had the choice. i could live without all the other channels ~ period

We have not had cable for over a year now and to be honest, I do not feel that we are missing that much. I would love to have EWTN, but do not have that much time to watch anyways.

We just moved into a new house and instead of paying a minimum of $30/month for basic cable or dish/directv we went to Wal-Mart and bought an antenna for $80 and put it in the attic. The picture is not crystal clear, but saving $30/month is more important than a little fuzz on a picture. And it keeps the kids from migrating in front of the TV for hours and hours.

This is my humble opinion.

I second that.
