Hopefully, the recently proposed (requested) a la carte pricing will be implemented (by the FCC).
Then you’ll be able to buy ONLY the channels you want.
That would solve my problem. It allows for a free market and doesn’t censor anyone unnecessarily. That is what I would like to see happen.

Yeah, that’s what I’m talking about… basic cable. Do some of you get the basic network channels without paying for a cable box package or satellite such as Dish Network? I certainly don’t. For me it is part of a Basic Cable Package.
Yes, when DH and I moved into our home, it was at least a week before we had cable hooked up. We dug out the big antenna, plugged it in, and got ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, PBS, and WB from the local affiliates. If we cut cable, we will get the same channels for the price of the electricity needed to run the TV.

I imagine that in rural areas, this becomes much more difficult, if not impossible to do.

I’m all about the “a-la-carte” way of doing it. I would love the opportunity to only buy a half-dozen cable channels. That’s all we watch, anyway.

You’re preaching to the chior. If you want to do the Lord’s work, we should all be writing letters. Starting with the network, the shows’ cast and crew, and your local network affiliate.

I’d cut the dang thing in a New York second, plus toss the TV, but DH would curl up and experience intense withdrawal.
I would miss Law & Order, though not enough to keep the TV.

There are more important things to organize than a group of Christians that while not admitting it outloud are actually for CENSORSHIP …arguing that theres too many unwashed out there who simply are too stupid and will fall for everything and lose their faith, so WE who know best are doing it for their good. Nope…I will never side with Christians over this matter.

The REMOTE and the V-CHIP are the great equalizers when it comes to ratings and content.
👍

I have been reading threads about morally offensive tv programming. Some of those include: ER, The Book of Daniel, Desperate Housewives, South Park, the list goes on.
What’s so offensive about The Book of Daniel? Is it because the priest has problems? Are men of God supposed to be perfect? Are all Catholic/Christian families supposed to be perfect?
Sure, we can write letters here and there, complaining about content in programming or commercials, we can turn it off, but it doesnt’ make much of a dent. Are Christians getting what we pay for? Do we continue to pay for it? Do we have a moral obligation to not pay for it?
Simple solution: Don’t watch what you don’t like.
If we are serious about change? There needs to be an organized boycott throughout the Christian community of cancelling Cable or satellite subscribtions for one year with a carefully chosen list of shows that we would like to see removed, and possibly sold to HBO or Movie channels. They would fit in well with Six Feet Under, The L. Word, etc. If not removed from local channels we will continue the boycott, only to watch acceptable sitcoms, movies etc. on DVD or video. That would seriously hit the pocketbook.
Simple solution: Don’t watch what you don’t like.
There is a market for immoral and God-mocking entertainment, let it be on special cable channels so that we have a choice of whether we want to pay for it. I’m not proposing we burn books or DVDs or Cable boxes. I am proposing that consumers have more choice. I would like to see local programming and basic cable, be less offensive so that we dont’ have to pay for it, let the blatantly offensive material go to special cable providers, if consumers want that programming they can order it. Let the consumer consume what they want, rather than buying it only to turn it off.
I want freedom. Shouldn’t consumers have a say as to what we want to pay for, what we want to promote with our hard- earned dollars? We wouldn’t be forcing censureship, but refusing to promote programming we do not find acceptable or entertaining. That is simply smart shopping.
Well not everybody holds the same beliefs as you. It wouldn’t be so fair if Southpark, and other shows meant for entertainment, were removed from everybody’s homes.
As many people say, “If you don’t like it, turn it off.” I agree, but I say “If you don’t like it, don’t pay for it.”
Sure, that’s all your choice if you don’t want to pay for it.
Just get rid of your tv, or keep only the PAX channel. Almost everything you see on tv will most likely offend you, so there’s no point in boycotting every single thing you’re against.
As a solution, Perhaps Catholic Video store owners could join forces to create a “netflix” mail order DVD business which carries only Christian- friendly DVDs… And all you people hooked on Soap Operas could give them up for lent… and the folks who like to watch football or other sports would have to invite yourselves over to a friend’s house, LOL. Think of how much more time we would have to spend with family and in the community of we didn’t have endless hours of tv to watch. If I do this I will get my news from the internet, and rent DVDs.
Wouldn’t really work.
At Catholic Answers in the Family forum, I started a thread about American Girl, several of us members started a boycott, We were effective at contacting other Pro-life, Pro-family groups, and the American Girl boycott went National. I will probably cut the cable on my own, for my own family… would anyone care to join me?
Naw.

1. Would any of you be willing to cut the cord for one year as an experiment?
Nope.
2. Regardless of whether you could do it…What is your top ten list of the tv shows you wish were not on basic cable?
Home Improvement. Umm, can’t think of any other lame shows right now.

No I would not. I simply block any channel I find offensive. I only have basic. I go to blockbuster and choose what Movies I want to see. No HBO, Showtime or any other premium channels. Not only are they expensive, no control over what is on there (nudity, violence, cursing, ect) even “good movies” are repeated so much that you get so sick of them by the end of the month.

Netflix has become our primary means of entertainment. The selection is excellent, convenience is awesome, and I never have to go into the video stores and view those terrible VHS/DVD cases. I never, ever brought my children into those stores.
