Would you be willing to cut your cable cord?

Island Oak:
I actually rely on cable for GOOD programming because the networks have slid so far into sensationalistic programming. I enjoy the History Channel, Discovery, Animal Planet and some of the events/competitions featured on the sports channels.

3/4 shows listed by the OP are network shows. It’s getting to the point that I can’t have the Today show with Matt & Katie on anymore while feeding my kids breakfast --if it’s not some sex-saturated segment or celebrity pregnancy/divorce/drug-bust/bulemia update, it’s the commercials in between featuring clips for that afternoon’s Dr. Phil, Tyra or Oprah shows–all of which are obsessed with cheaters, swingers, sex-addicts, teens who dress/act like hookers, abusers, etc… I’m not a soap opera watcher, but from what I’ve heard it’s nothing less than soft-core porn. What ever happened to all the oversight and tight rules on content for network broadcasts since children have easy access to all this smut?
Exactly. We watch our good basic cable channels more than the basic cable package network channels. The OP is talking about cutting it all cold turkey, including network channels. I would rather pay for only the good programming through DVD purchase, rental etc. and a donation to EWTN.

Do all of you get the basic network channels free and clearly without paying for a cable package? I don’t .

Since when are ABC, NBC, FOX, etc. not “cable channels”? My take is that we have to pay to get them (yeah, bunny ears might provide some fuzzy reception for some of them, but mostly not), so how are they not cable? Hmmm? :ehh:

With all the high-tech TVs/audio anymore, is it even possible to just plug in a TV and get a picture? We have cable on 5 TVs in our house just to get something other than ant races. Many of the flat screen TVs are just monitors with separate reception boxes that receive the cable/broadcast signal.

Yeah, that’s what I’m talking about… basic cable. Do some of you get the basic network channels without paying for a cable box package or satellite such as Dish Network? I certainly don’t. For me it is part of a Basic Cable Package. I just think families should have a choice to be free of the blatantly immoral garbage (especially before 9:00pm) with basic cable and network channels (ABC, NBC, FOX etc.) If people want to pay extra for the higher level cable channels let them watch what they want. The basic channels are becomming more and more vile and I am paying for them… more than we give at Mass some months. There is something wrong with this picture.

BTW… does anyone get NOGGIN? Daytime is great for little kids, but don’t let your kids watch it at night, thinking it’s a good channel for kids. It’s awful.

Mike Dye:
If I had cable I would cut it. The only thing else I can think of is to throw a brick through the regular TV screen, but that wouldn’t fly very well with the little dove who has been patiently waiting for the return of “American Idol”!.. Yuck!!!.. If it wasn’t a sin against the 5th Commandment I would poke out my eyes and ears!
This why God made books and the great outdoors.

yeah same here. With all the posters saying that the network channels are “free channels” and not part of cable packages, I wonder what subscriber they have… Maybe I misunderstand. I know that we actually have to pay for the local and network channels as a part of a basic cable package. The only thing we pay extra for is “personal tv” to be able to record the channels we select for later viewing. (similar to Tivo) A few years ago we had HBO and showtime, I couldn’t bear to pay for Six Feet Under (I liked it before it became totally centered on the Gay brother) and “The L Word” and all the soft core porn. And let’s not forget all the pro-choice messages. (“If Walls Could Talk” on HBO) My husband and I felt a moral obligation to stop that programming.

Now we are wondering how basic cable is any different, despite a few channels. I want to keep EWTN on the air, but am wondering if it wouldn’t be better to donate money to them. I’m sure it would be more than they siphon off my Dish Network Bill. I just might call and ask how much EWTN gets from my subscription. Just out of curiosity.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a total prude. I just find the blatant pro-choice, anti-religious, gay agenda, propaganda offensive. I dont mind a movie or show covering those topics and promoting tolerance. I *do *mind the attempt to erode American morality with propaganda, and I am just as guilty as the writers and producers if I am paying for it. I have no right to complain if I am not willing to put my money where my mouth is… am I wrong? I was watching Headline News at 2:00 in the afternoon in my bedroom (I am careful what my kids see. My 5 yr old son walked into the room just when a Dish Network commercial for one of teh Porn channels came on. It had scantily clad “nurses” and it was an ad for “Naughty Nurses” It then said “And just what are naughty nurses?” And went on to explain in detail. My boy’s eyes were glued to the screen as he said “What’s that Mommy?’”

Shouldn’t I be able to catch the news for a few minutes without worrying what my kids will see during the commercials?

Just a few years ago we could watch the Today Show. It has become unacceptable for children’s viewing in just a few short years.

I miss books and the great outdoors! :crying: The sad thing is my family doesnt’ watch as much tv as the average. I just hate paying for what we feel too offended to watch just so that we can have a handfull of shows and channels.

At least only EWTN and the deserving DVDs would get my funding.

By the way if anyone is looking for some relevant, interesting and important public media–try tuning into your local NPR station–they are broadcasting the Alito hearings all day and it’s fascinating. And probably a smidge more important in the long run than the news that Angelina Jolie is pregnant.

I listen to NPR regularly. If I listen to NPR and watch Fox News, they balance each other out, politically.

If we cut the cord, we will get all of our news from NPR and Fox and CNN websites. That is where I usually get the news during the day because I avoid my young children watching news on tv. Our “Local” news is from a nearby state anyway. Our state is so small that there is no local news channel. We get a local paper.

I watched the Alito hearings yesterday. I tuned in long enough to watch Kennedy act like a fool in order to get exaggerated claims into the media. He creates a sensation over something irrelevant yet it is controversial enough a claim that the ignorant of our society hear it and assume it is true. Sure enough, the nightly news was chalk full of it, but basically showed Kennedy’s heated accusations and nothing more.

And those people have the most…how should I put this… *interesting * voices! Npr is a bit too pro-death for my liking. If they honestly believe that abortion is safer than a normal delivery and actually beneficial for most women, how could I trust them on other issues? I can’t.

This is simply a broadcast of the hearings as they are going on. I’m not sure who the “they” is to which you ascribe this rather odd critique, but I do know that the more we can hear directly from a judicial candidate minus the filter/opinions of commentators, the better.

Hopefully, the recently proposed (requested) a la carte pricing will be implemented (by the FCC).
Then you’ll be able to buy ONLY the channels you want.

A comment that NPR is pro-death is not an odd critique, but the first thing that pops into one’s head when someone recommends NPR. I’m not intending to argue, but the thought is natural.

Like if I was looking for humorous radio programs, and someone said Howard Stern was funny, it might just be possible that I would muse, “Funny? Maybe–but he’s a bit vulgar for me.”

Peace.
John

Sure 🙂 Thanks for letting us know about the hearings. My comments were directed at some of the other talks I had the misfortune of hearing on that station. Luckily it has been a while, so I’m sorry I am not able to remember the names of the people involved in the outrageous talk I was referring to.

I’m 6 years ahead of ya’!

At close to $50 a month in cable bills around us, we chose to spend $100 once on a honkin big antenna in the attic.

At 5% compounding interest, that $50/month will be over $15,000 in my kids Upromise college savings account by the time she turns 18.

You know the best part? I don’t miss it a bit. That’s right, I’m saving $15,000 and losing NOTHING of value to me.

Not only am I willing to cut the cable cord, I got rid of my television altogether. I have been much happier since; my brain is clearer, my logical processes work again, and my thoughts are my own, not those of some pundit or politician or newscaster. I really think television in general has been utilised very poorly and can now be proven to be actively dangerous to people’s lives; we sit for hours on end, gaining weight and losing brain cells. I’ve also got rid of the radio, and the result is I now have control of my home environment again. If I want to hear music I play a CD (or my flute or piano!). If I want to see a movie I watch a DVD on my portable DVD player. But more than either of those things, I find myself reading much more than I did, and I’m definitely more relaxed and happy. Try it! 🙂

There are more important things to organize than a group of Christians that while not admitting it outloud are actually for CENSORSHIP …arguing that theres too many unwashed out there who simply are too stupid and will fall for everything and lose their faith, so WE who know best are doing it for their good. Nope…I will never side with Christians over this matter.

The REMOTE and the V-CHIP are the great equalizers when it comes to ratings and content.
We use the Remote and V-Chip. We still promote it by paying for it.
I am talking about not funding programming that I find wholeheartedly morally objectionable. We get what we pay for and I dont’ like what I get.

So, you are completely against Censorship? Certainly we all allow a little censorship, or do you think there should be a reality show with child molestors “dating” underage children? You would allow censorship on that, right?

I would simply like to be able to purchase a basic cable package without paying for the promotion of things that go totally against my beliefs. I am not suggesting that the upper teir channels change their programming, HBO’s “Six Feet Under,” “Real Sex” etc. If it meets the censors requirements, let people purchase it if they want. I don’t purchase those channels for that reason. The problem is that Basic Cable (local network channels etc.) are making it impossible for me to pay for their shows (whether I watch them or not) I am paying $60 - $70 for very little product in my basic package with Dish Network.

Thanks for posting. I agree with you. Most of what we watch in my house are DVDs, EWTN, educational channels and the news. Our generation suffers from overstimulated, soothed to the point of hypnosis, cluttered minds. It leads to group thought rather than creativity and originality. We need to learn to turn it off. Over the past few years, I have just realized how much I am paying for very little programming I like.
