If only the Church would mandate receiving Holy Communion kneeling and on the tongue…

Ah, I so love daydreaming.

Regardless, of course I wouldn’t leave the Church over this or any other issue.

Although I would love to hear from one of the people that voted that they’d leave the Church if it did get rid of Communion standing and in the hand!   Why on Earth is this issue so important that you’d jeopardize your eternal salvation over it?
I say why is FORCED kneeling so important that you would embarrass those who cannot kneel, put them into positions where they have to have a “consult” with a priest before every service and make them feel like they have a HUGE SPOTLIGHT over their head over a personal preference that is honored already? You can kneel if you want, so KNEEL.

Why would anyone leave the Church that Jesus HIMSELF established?? Especially for such a silly reason! If kneeling is what it takes to recieve Our Lord, then sign me up for kneeling! If doing a backflip was what it took, then sign me up! I might wind up in tracton, but Jesus is worth it!
Maybe they don’t feel it’s a silly reason.

COT and Kneeling are both the norms of the Church. For the Novus Ordo- not just the TLM. The American Bishops have asked for and recieved permission from Rome to allow reception in the hand and while standing since these are not the norm.

In addition, no one can be refused Communion because they want to receive on the tongue or kneeling, again even at a Novus Ordo.

While the Church as permitted variance from the norms in America, I hope the practices of Communion in the hand and while standing both stop. Kneeling and reception on the tongue both are traditions that assist in having a reverent attitude towards the Eucharist. Considering the great many Catholics who struggle to believe in the True Presence, the greater reverence toward the Blessed Sacrament is needed now especially.

It would be better to say it is the norm for the Latin Rite. Don’t forget that you’re not the only Rite in the Catholic Church.

Problem is, there are people, priests, religious, lay, etc, who feel recieving on the toungue kneeling is disobedience.
What a bizarre question, considering that it is the universal norm of the Church. I already receive kneeling on the tongue from the priest or deacon only, so I can’t vote in the poll.

Why not leave reception of Holy Communion up to the individual Faithful?

Both Forms of Standing and Kneeling are permissible by the Magisterium of the Church.

There’s no uniformity from one parish to the other. This is what creates dissensions.

And often too I find the Option of either way of reception of Holy Communion either criticized or discouraged by both clergy and laity.

What gives? 🤷

I won’t say we choose one over the other, but there should be a universal norm. Whether standing or kneeling, its up to the Church to decide. But there should be a universal norm. I think having 4 different postures (standing CITH, standing COTT, kneeling CITH, kneeling COTT) is confusing.

Yes, I limited my observation to America, since that’s where I live and am most aware of what is going on, but I am aware that standing and CITH happen other places as well. The point remains though, that kneeling and COTT are still the norm of the Latin Rite, and to do otherwise requires permission for an exemption from the norm.

Pax.
Read the GIRM for the US, standing is the norm, not kneeling.

Note: In most of the Eastern Catholic Churches that I have attended, communion is on the tongue, but standing. Is it REALLY all that important?
I wouldn’t say that Communion is in the tongue, at least in the Byzantine Rite which I belong to. I would say its more “in the mouth” because we do not stick our tongue out for Communion.

Or maybe in the spoon? lol Maybe CITMWAS (Communion in the mouth with a spoon).

What a ridiculous question! Who would leave the church for such a silly reason. Communion on the tongue while kneeling is the NORMAL way of receiving.
I’m with you, ciero! 👍 :yup:

I go to the TLM exclusively anyway, and even though at times it’s hard for me to kneel for long periods of time, I’m happy to offer my ‘little’ pain and go down on my knees to receive my Lord on my tongue!

Not so funny really; the spoon was the way Holy Viaticum was formerly given to some of the Dying Sick.

And it wouldn’t surprise me if its still done by some priests.

Funny would be a matter a opinion, really. Sorry you didn’t find the humor in it.

The humor comes from the fact that the person I was replying to is from the Byzatine/Ukrainian Rite of the Catholic Church, and so does receive from a spoon. So the humor in it was that I compined his communion in the mouth, with the communion with a spoon, to come of up CITMWAS.

Again, sorry you didn’t find the humor in it.

I can’t vote yet as I’m still a “trial member” (when does that go away anyway??) But I’d like to throw my 2 cents in.
I’m converting. I’ve done a lot of research, praying, and reading. Not only would communion on the tongue and kneeling for communion not drive me away, I would rather it come back into practice! I dislike the modernism that has come into the Church since V2. Oddly enough, the practices that are supposed to make me feel “more welcome” and “included” have had the opposite effect. I dislike the OF and desperately wish my parish would do an EF mass once in a while.
One thing I intend to bring up with the priest is the possibility of a TLM once a month or so, and I’m going to request baptism by the old form.

Last night I went to the Byzantine Liturgy for the Dormition of the Theotokos and when I went to receive communion I was not thinking straight and I was sticking my tongue out, and the priest had to tell me not to stick it out. When you often go to different rites sometime it is difficult to avoid confusion :o

I would have no choice but to leave, since it is not permitted to receive in this way in my Church.

(I do wish folks would clarify questions like this as “for the Latin Rite”. 😉 )

You will be allowed to vote when your status is bumped to New Member status, approximately four weeks after your join date.

God bless.

It could still be applied to the Eastern Rites. The Pope could change the way in which the Eucharist is received in the Eastern Rites (though to do so would be a damaging political move). So the question can still stand for the whole Church.

What are you talking about? I’m at a parish where kneeling and COTT is the norm. And yet, I’m married to someone who can’t kneel. There is no interview with a priest to get permission. If you are unable to kneel you stand. Why do people insist on making up imagined issues where there are none.

My sincerest sympathies to the four voters who have already left the Church (assuming they are Latn Rite members) in their hearts through either misunderstanding or pride. Humilty and obedience are in my opinion the core values of spirituality, to refuse either is to be already spiritually dead.
