Would YOU like to know the results of the removal of communion rails

I was never desensitized. It’s why I am an Eastern Catholic. Where communion is still distributed by priest and deacon, via tongue.

Sacrilege? maybe reserch why they were there in the first place

this piece screams agenda pushing to me. It presents no fact, just an opinion. And an opinion that will lead to a near occasion of sin.

Is the author trying to drive people away from Mass ?

Amoris Laetitia fits into this larger historical trajectory whereby the Mass has been stripped of its transcendent, mysterious, fearful and challenging sacrificial realism and pushed continually in the direction of an ordinary meal with ordinary folks doing ordinary things for a this-worldly end,[5] with a forced spontaneity and embarrassing banality that has failed to attract the overflow crowds predicted by Paul VI. At such a Mass, is there anything to do but receive communion? Who would ever think of going just for the sake of adoring God and contemplating His beauty? Opportunities and incentives for adoration are practically non-existent in the Novus Ordo, and beauty has fared no better, or rather much worse. In such circumstances, to place a barrier between a free meal and a guest who thinks well of himself for being there is unthinkable.”

It’s kind of strange and contrary to this article that I was in Mass in the vernacular today, received communion by hand and then with others , knelt in Adoration for an hour. The Priest, the one celebrating the Mass in the vernacular, the post V11 Mass, says at the end of Mass

“ please kneel for the Adoration”.

Now that’s just one example in one rural Church that contradicts your author.

The author definitely has an agenda with the usual suspects, viz: Communion in the hand, Novus Ordo, no communion rail etc. etc.

I think the author is somewhat correct in his thinking however, that Communion has become just a commonplace part of the liturgy.

Everyone in the church goes up to communion (even non-Catholics) or divorced/remarried Catholics, some don’t even consume the host immediately but try and take it away. Stuff like that. We can’t judge how worthy the recipients are, but there is reason to worry that some/many are not worthy.

MY belief is that the CHIEF CULPRIT is the doing away of the Eucharistic Fast. Pre-Vatican II, it used to be from midnight on. This encouraged early Masses. I miss them. Now the earliest Mass at my Parish is 9am, everyday of the week.

Now there is virtually no fast. The priest at my parish takes a cup of water and drinks throughout the Mass due to his medication which gives him dry-mouth. This has influenced many parishioners to keep hydrating water bottles with them throughout the Mass.

When there was a Fast required, some/many people didn’t receive communion if they broke their fast for whatever reason. Also, people that may have felt unworthy to go to communion did not feel obligated to go no matter what, since it could easily be supposed that they broke their fast. Now if someone abstains from Communion it must be assumed there is some VERY SERIOUS impediment, causing problems for all.

Oddly enough, this was also a time of frequent confession for many if not most of the parishioners.

Communion in the hand is a red-herring. That practice was documented as early as the 3rd-4th Centuries in St. Cyril’s Catechism. Not at all sacrilegious, or irreverent.

The “Novus Ordo” is also a red-herring. The Mass itself is not to blame!

Pretty bad article in my opinion. Biased, slanted, agenda pushing and harsh …

It is perplexing to me when people present their personal taste/preference as something that everyone must comply with

I hope this isn’t a dumb question but what is a communion rail?

No,it isn t…you are very young.
It was a low railing that separated the altar from the pews . As a semicircle. So when one went for Communion, one would kneel against that railing. You would see persons kneeling in that semicicle and the priest moving along behind it giving Communion.
There are pictures in another thread about altar railings

I didn’t know the fast applied to drinking water as well? I have sometimes stepped out of Mass to get a quick drink, so should I quit doing this?

I used to go to a parish before I moved, and they still have communion rails there, they just don’t use them.

I also saw a couple of them in very old and beautiful churches in Ireland

Joe, Please see my POST just above yours

A communion rail was [and rarely still is] a rail that seperated the Sanctuary from the main part of the Church; making is very similar to the OT “Holy of Holies”

It had on the outside a set of Kneelers so that Holy Communion was received on the tongue and KNEELING as is worthy of the Gift of Jesus Himself in Person. And ONLY a Priest or Deacon could distribute Holy Communion.

It also acted as a barrier that allowed only male gender to enter [ALL altar servers were boys or men]; there were no Lay Lectors; NO EXTRAORDINARY [now the very ordinary] Lay-ministers of Christ Sacred Body and Blood.

There was a far greater sense and awareness of piety.

God Bless you and thanks for asking

Patrick

HOW VERY SAD THAT IS

May God forgive that Pastor for missing such an opportunity

Dear FRIEND in Christ,

That article ONLY recommended a more PIOUS Mass and reception of OUR GOD; that hardly is PERSONAL opinions; but GOOD advice

Awwww. Why did they take that away!? I’m sure people would revere the Eucharist more if that was still there

Pjm is this your blog? Did you write this?

Whether or not I ‘lived’ pre and post Vat 11 is irrelevant.
Whether or not I choose to share in the Eucharist going down the aisle walking, on my knees, in a wheelchair, on a walking stick , also is irrelevant.
Are you suggesting a person in a wheel chair , who sits and takes the Eucharist in his hand is not as worthy? Not as worthy as a kneeler mouth receiver? Not as holy and worshipping as fully?

Touching God? Touching the Body and Blood , Soul and Divinity of Jesus, well my friend, Jesus wants us to touch Him. He wants to touch us. We join with Jesus as the Body of Christ, the Church.
Why are you spreading these ideas? You are spreading error.

The only relevant is, that no matter what type of Mass, Jesus is present. No matter what type of building, Priest, congregation, music, language, Jesus is there.

That’s the only relevant thing. Jesus is there. We share three ways at Mass, any Mass, do you know what they are?
and we ask Jesus a very specific petition when we take the Eucharist. Do you know what that is?
These are what is relevant.

Receiving in hand or mouth makes no difference to what we are receiving. And why.

If you don’t feel you are worshipping God at any Mass, the problem is with you. Worship is an interior action. Worship comes from the heart the mind the soul.

‘ Hear oh Israel, the Lord our God is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, your mind, your strength.’

Joe I will take a photo tomorrow.
It’s a rail that pre Vat 11, people would kneel at ( if they could kneel) and receive the Eucharist.

Not really,Joe.
When I think of my grandparents, and parents, they were the same deep loving Jesus persons before and after the railings.
And to be more honest still,I was a very small child and have vague memories, but how and when they disappeared was unnoticed to me and not an issue in the spiritual life of my family.
