i’d probably just think of all the posts on CA about the subject and laugh to myself, then i’d try not to be an oversensitive congregation member about it and go on with my life without getting my pants in a bunch over a few girls dancing.

but thats just me.

To each his own, if you hate dancers, do what you gotta do, as they say. It’s a free country and you are free to hate liturgical dancers. Godspeed to you. fight the good fight!

but in thinkingt, those that choose to fight this fight, is it really something about the dancers you are angered by, or is the beast within?

At first I would’ve thought, why not? I mean, I’ve seen liturgical dance before and it actually was really cool (done at the right moment, with the right kind of dance-movements, it can actually add to the experience of worship)…

but no one was wearing skirts that… could they be called see-through, or just… I mean, those outfits look very sexually revealing, and I would not feel comfortable with one person dressed like that, let alone several…

I don’t mean to judge, but… that picture makes it look like a very sexual thing, rather than sacred (in those instances when people manage to seperate sexuality from it’s own true sacredness, that is…)

Saoirse
This is what I thought when I saw this picture, bare shoulders, sheer flowing skirts:rolleyes: whatever happen to modesty?
Luckly for me I have never seen something like this and hope I never do.
Actually until I read it here I never even knew about this.

It doesn’t bother you that these young girls have been encouraged to dress in skin tight, revealing leotards and sheer flowing skirts and dance and sway slowly and suggestively in front of male members of the congregation (boys, men, priests) AND Our Lord present in The Blessed Sacrament? It should.

There is simply no reason for liturgical dance; it serves no purpose and has been forbidden. It is not a matter of disliking dancing - we are not at the ballet or the opera. It is a question of what is appropriate in celebrating the re-presentation of the sacrafice of Jesus Christ at Calvary in reparation for the sins of mankind. This is the Mass not Jesus Christ Superstar.

Also, such dancing could be an enticement to sin for some males struggling with the sin of lust. There have been many threads discussing how difficult it is for men to maintain purity with women walking down the street dressed suggestively… in similar kinds of tops perhaps? What were these parents thinking? Would they allow their daughters to walk down the street in as little as this? Do they think that men can’t sin because they are inside a church? One would think the best place for those struggling with impure thoughts would be Mass - but here they are forced to watch these alluring displays and told "shut up and watch - it’s spiritual! Shame! God have mercy on us. 😦 And please please please lead us out of this mess. :gopray2:

OP if I were you I would run run run as fast as I could to the Tridentine Mass - and we have! It is worth the travel. 🙂

Yeah, your right. I mean, how dare people think that Mass be a Sacred event. How “overly sensitive” of them to get their “pants in a bunch” over Jesus receiving the respect and adoration that he should.

[/sarcasm]

I think no matter how unpopular it may be, you stand up for what is right. Didn’t someone else do that?

Erm… can someone tell me what is liturgical dance?
Any dance performed during mass is called liturgical dance or there is specific timing etc?

I experienced mass, where before the offertory was brought to the altar, there was dance performed by 6-8 dancers. Is it considered liturgical dance?

Looking for practical advice.
I don’t have to think about it in our church because it would never happen in our church. but as for your question, if it really bothers you, why don’t you take it up privately with your priest?

i gotta say, the very fact you think this way disturbs me.

If you see a young girl dancing and it gets you worked up… reread my post on the “beast living within” that is the real enemy… you paint the dancers like they’re go-go girls working a club in vegas… its not like that… and the mind that takes it there is the suspect mind, not the dancers.

You know what? You make a very ridiculous comment here. “you paint the dancers like they’re go-go girls working a club in vegas… its not like that”. Sleeveless, skintight outfits with see through skirts? Most vegas dancers wear more than that. But the entire point is that it is DISRESPECTFUL. This is the House of God we are talking about, during MASS. If you find this acceptable, you may as well go to Rick Warrens church with his hula dancers. Something that CAN generate lust, has no business in Mass.

NASB:
1st Corinthians 10:31 · Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
1st Corinthians 10:32 · Give no offense either to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God;
1st Corinthians 10:33 · just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit but the profit of the many, so that they may be saved.

I did not find the dancers or their outfits offensive. I have never actually seen “liturgical dance” - never happened in my parish, or any others in my area that I’ve heard about. Perhaps their artistic needs can be met elsewhere in the parish hall - a performing troupe, dinner theater?

Videotape and put it on youtube. Actually, I’d videotape it and send in to the bishop first and then onto all of the congregations in Rome. They actually have the power to do something.

But seriously, there is a chain of command. I’d follow it until you get the desired results. I happen to know first hand that Rome loves point and click CD-Roms.

uuummmm Chris - I am a woman. Seeing these young girls dressed in this way does not get me “worked up”.

I feel the need to clarify that this discusssion is not about you or me or our personal artistic leanings. It is not about whether we have be personally offended or tempted by liturgical dancers. I have no desire to respond to an ad hominem (or should that be ad feminam 😛 ) argument. Let’s stick to the topic at hand - The Holy Mass - and not lower ourselves to uncharitable personal slights. :o

It is an unfortunate fact however that many men do struggle with sins of lust and my point was that they should be able to run into the arms of The Father, His Son, and Mother Mary and seek the Grace they need to overcome these temptations. Where would be the very best place to run for such assistance? And yet here they are confronted by what can only be described as scantily clad young girls.

I happen to have spent many hours of my own childhood dressed in similar fashion for *dance classes *and * *ballet performances. And if God sees fit to bless us with some girls I will most definately be whipping up some frothy pink tutus quick smart! 😃 I am a girly girl who just lived and breathed ballet for my entire childhood. The proper arena for this type of dancing and this type of attire is a stage, a rehersal studio etc. It would be entirely appropriate if one were putting on a play or giving a dance recital or taking a ballet class.

The point that you are missing is that this is the Mass. With all due respect the fact that you think that this kind of performance during the Mass is desirable disturbs me. Once again this IS NOT A DANCE RECITAL! There is no call for a performance of any kind during the re-presentation of Our Lord’s ultimate sacrifice on Calvary. Yet again, it is not the garments, the girls or the dancing in and of themselves that are the issue here. It is the setting. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. These innocent girls have been misled into thinking that what they are doing enhances the atmosphere of worship at Mass. In reality nothing but nothing can add to the clean, pure, unbloody and effective sacrifice of The Son of God to The Father. This is the highest act of worship there is and nothing can enhance it.

To put it in perspective, can you imagine a group of liturgical dancers prancing around the foot of Our Lord’s cross at Calvary as He offered Himself to The Father for the sins of the world? The Mass is one and the same sacrifice as Calvary.

As pointed out in post 7, liturgical dancing has traditionally not had a place in the Church. Such practices should be run by the ‘chain of command’ before implimented.

Personally, I wouldn’t mind if someone came up with a liturgy that used dancing; but it is not for individual priests/bishops to decide upon. Things should be done correctly before innovation is brought in; because then the original meanings get even more confused.

Another poster had a good point that one wouldn’t imagine dancers at calvary. I would just like to add from my perspective that traditionally dancing in many different religions has had wholy different meanings and expressions that would not suit those in the Church and the mixture of dancing without set and approved boundaries might bring false impressions and confusion on that in which we Catholics know is Truth.

If I were in this predicament, I would respectfully go up the chain of command (step by step) to point out what appears to be a current abuse.

I know who the people in my parish would want to do liturgical dancing at Mass.

The image I have of them dancing, is to frightening and horrible to describe. 😃

Chris yer post made me laugh, this was my thought as well when I read that. (sorry to that poster) :o I do not get this whole liturgical dancers thing at all. But I sure hear a great deal about it on Catholic forums. I would seriously have to see this to make any kind of judgement. If it’s not allowed then we shouldn’t be doing it, but I’m not sure I could get a real clear cut answer on that one. It’s possible I missed a post 🙂

I wouldn’t leave a parish over it.

To the OP, If you really feel strongly about this then I would go the priest and voice your concerns. I see a great deal of complaining in here about liturgical abuses but I’ve never heard any stories about people going in and having a very serious heart to heart with thier priest. I would try this first. Don’t give up. 😉 You never know maybe others feel as you do.

I wouldn’t have to do a thing. My wonderful pastor (God Bless him and grant him long life) would give them the boot himself. 👍
