The Vatican letter on yoga and new age practices is fear-inciting insofar as it addresses so-called eastern body practices, which are deemed incompatible with Catholic doctrine as well as destructive of human stability. The letter warns that those engaged in such practices for the sake of anything beyond mundane physical exercise or relaxation are involved in self-destructive activity; that unless the practitioner is an advanced adept no bodily experiences can be legitimately identified as spiritual; and points out that Christians who have acknowledged the meditative role of body practices avoid the “exaggerations and partiality” of eastern methods, which are often recommended to those insufficiently prepared.

It adds that postures and breathing can become an “idol and thus an obstacle” to experiencing God, then states that such body practices “can degenerate into a cult of the body” with severe consequences, including “mental schizophrenia,” “psychic disturbance,” or “moral deviations.” More recently, in 2011, Italian priest and chief exorcist for the Diocese of Rome Gabriele Amorth warned that yoga is satanic and “leads to evil.” And, in 2014, in County Donegal, Ireland, Father Padraig O’Baoill warned his parishioners against “endangering” their souls by practicing yoga, which he suggested was “unsavoury.”

Colhoun joins this yogaphobic maelstrom and, unfortunately, drags Francis in with him. He recently warned that yoga leads to the “Kingdom of Darkness” and draws people toward “Satan and the fallen angels”

In 2011, the Vatican’s own chief exorcist, Gabriele Amorth, told The Telegraph that it leads to a belief in Hinduism, and that “all eastern religions are based on false belief in reincarnation”.

And former Pope Benedict XVI, when he leader of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, warned that yoga, Zen, and other transcendental meditation could “degenerate into a cult of the body” that devalues prayer.

Background

In 1989, the Vatican’s doctrinal watchdog warned that Eastern meditation practices such as Zen and yoga can “degenerate into a cult of the body” that debases Christian prayer. Attempts to combine Christian and non-Christian meditation are "not free from dangers and errors,’’ it said. The 23-page document was signed by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (later Pope Benedict XVI) and approved by Pope John Paul II

Testimony of an ex-yogi

(and I’m not talking about Yogi Bear who steals picnic baskets)

"This man had personally explored a number of new age practices in depth, including yoga. He had attended a special center for Yoga in California and reached a high level. The author claimed that at the upper levels, practitioners are actually inviting the serpent into their bodies during advanced relaxation poses and meditations. Hint: the serpent is not God.

Not one to spread rumors that cannot be verified, I went to the Internet and put in the words Yoga and Serpent. Lots of entries popped up. Some of it was Christian-based warning against yoga. If you are a yoga enthusiast, you could easily brush these sites aside as fanatical. But you can’t brush aside the fact that actual yoga sites, announce the power of the serpent as part of the attraction. Here is an excerpt from one of many sites:

Kundalini (Divine Serpent Power) is a super power of our life.
Over here lies focused all energies of the body and mind.
Great Yogis, Rishis, Munis had discovered it.
They all proclaimed that Kundalini is the supreme energy.
It is the final step that helps us unite with God.
Divine Serpent Power is the super power of our life.
As a Christian, this should shout out… False god! One book on yoga sold through Amazon is even called The Serpent Power."

“In Asia, Yoga is also found in Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, and Bon (the early religion of Tibet) and has evolved into different systems, but all share the common goal of “union with the Absolute,” or divine, and are spiritual practices inseparable from the Eastern mystical religions that spawned them.

“To the Christian, the greatest danger is the spiritual idolatry, before God, in engaging in practices devised thousands of years ago by pagan experts or “adepts,” to become “united” with spiritual deity, they believed to be the ‘Absolute,’ or ‘Ultimate Reality,’ but which the Bible calls ‘fallen angels’ or demons.”

But even if it’s nothing more than an ancient religion, how should Catholics view it? Is it harmless physical exercise when just the stretching is used?

There is another, very surprising aspect behind those stretches. Yoga’s historical roots as a sex cult was reported in an article in New York Times this year.

Reporting on a sexual scandal of a well-known leader in yoga, the Times reported that the frequent scandals common among yoga devotees should come as no surprise.

“Yoga teachers and how-to books seldom mention that the discipline began as a sex cult – an omission that leaves many practitioners open to libidinal surprise.

Hatha yoga – the parent of the styles now practiced around the globe – began as a branch of Tantra. In medieval India, Tantra devotees sought to fuse the male and female aspects of the cosmos into a blissful state of consciousness.

The rites of Tantric cults, while often steeped in symbolism, could also include group and individual sex.”

Yoga is offered far and wide from gyms to schools and church activities. Isn’t it going overboard and becoming a troublemaker if we object to the practice of Yoga? But even in a yoga class where you evaluate it as mere stretching and balancing, are you astute enough to understand any and all terms that might be thrown out there in languages you don’t understand?

Looking at an excerpt from The Power of the Serpent, it’s easy to see that you could unwittingly participate in a class without understanding what is really taking place. Do you know what it means to pierce the Six Centres or regions (cakra) or Lotuses (padma) of the body? I don’t, but based on what I know, I think we should abstain. Here is an excerpt from the book:

“The power is the Goddess (Devi) Dundalini, or that which is coiled; for Her form is that of a coiled and sleeping serpent in the lowest bodily center at the base of the spinal column until by the means described She is aroused in that Yoga which is named after Her. Kundalini is the Divine Cosmic Energies in bodies…”
Does it strike you as odd that the author capitalizes pronouns “she” and “her” when referring to this serpent? A footnote on the page explains, “Devi is Bhujagi, or the Serpent.” So if your yoga instructor mentions Bhujagi during class, will you recognize the serpent being called on? Many people like exotic, exciting things. Different languages and cultures are interesting but yoga is not like a trip to a Chinese restaurant.

In Fr. Mitch Pacwa’s book, Catholics and the New Age, he describes Yoga as the general category of various kinds of Hindu disciplines meant to unite a person with the divine. He states: “Yoga can refer to physical (hatha) mental (raja) sexual (tantra) or other discipline to achieve enlightenment.” Fr. Pacwa’s book was written to alert Catholics of new age influences that hamper Catholic practices and traditions. It is highly regarded and is cited in the magisterial document Jesus Christ Bearer of the Water of Life: A Christian Reflection on the “New Age”.

Fr Jeremy Davies, the official exorcist for the Westminster archdiocese, warns against the practice of yoga: “Beware of any claims to mediate beneficial energies (e.g. Reiki)…any alternative therapy with its roots in Eastern religion… They are not harmless”, he insists

Catholic Exorcist Warns Against Yoga: ‘You’re Opening Yourself To Possession’
image: cdn.inquisitr.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Yoga-665x385.jpg

Yoga
An exorcist for the Catholic Church in Manila, Philippines has denounced the practice of yoga, warning parishioners that its meditative nature allows demons to enter a practitioner’s mind and soul. The Philippine Daily Inquirer reported Saturday about Msgr. Jay Bandojo, a Catholic-ordained exorcist, who spoke against yoga during a talk at the Arzobispado de Manila in Intramuros.

Bandojo specifically warned against chanting, a common practice in yoga. According to him, this practice makes people susceptible to possessions, allowing demons to “take advantage” of a yoga practitioner’s soul.

“When you practice yoga, you are told to ‘empty your mind’ while saying [the mantra] ‘om,’ so you can feel relaxed. But when you empty yourself, you’re opening yourself to possession. You have to be careful because demons might take advantage of (this) empty [vessel of your soul] and possess it.”

Bandojo isn’t the first member of the Catholic clergy to criticize the practice of yoga. Last July, an Irish priest named Padraig O’Baoill issued a similar warning to his flock in Gweedore, Ireland. According to Irish paper Donegal News, O’Baoill described yoga and other similar exercises like tai chi as “unsavory” and “contemptible” activities.

“As followers of Jesus Christ, we shouldn’t be taking part in any activities that are in conflict with our faith. Therefore don’t take any part in yoga classes, tai chi or reiki. Do not endanger your souls for the sake of such unsavoury activities.”

Gabriele Amorth (born 1 May 1925) is an Italian Roman Catholic priest and an exorcist of the Diocese of Rome who is reputed to have cleansed tens of thousands of demonic possessions

At a film festival in Umbria (where he was invited to introduce the 2011 film about exorcism called The Rite), he is quoted as saying that yoga is satanic because it leads to practice of Hinduism and “all eastern religions are based on a false belief in reincarnation” and "practicing yoga is satanic, it leads to evil

Then it’s very odd, how many Christians have practiced yoga for decades, and never turned into Hindus.

Back in 1989, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) of the Roman Catholic Church published the “Letter to the Bishops of the Catholic Church on Some Aspects of Christian Meditation” warning of the “dangers and errors” of fusing Christian and non-Christian meditative methods. The letter was written by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (later Pope Benedict XVI) and was approved for publication by Pope John Paul II.
From that letter:
  1. Some physical exercises automatically produce a feeling of quiet and relaxation, pleasing sensations, perhaps even phenomena of light and of warmth, which resemble spiritual well-being. To take such feelings for the authentic consolations of the Holy Spirit would be a totally erroneous way of conceiving the spiritual life. Giving them a symbolic significance typical of the mystical experience, when the moral condition of the person concerned does not correspond to such an experience, would represent a kind of mental schizophrenia which could also lead to psychic disturbance and, at times, to moral deviations.
That does not mean that genuine practices of meditation which come from the Christian East and from the** great non-Christian religions**, which prove attractive to the man of today who is divided and disoriented, cannot constitute a suitable means of helping the person who prays to come before God with an interior peace, even in the midst of external pressures.

What practices from “great non-Christian religions” is being referred to here?

I attended a few 'yoga" classes in my home town. All was going well while we concentrated on stretching, balance and increasing strength in core muscles. However, in the final fifteen minutes, the class took a turn toward spiritual avenues that did not include God but rather a notion that we are gods ourselves, a part of a union with ‘mother earth’. Hello! I made the sign of the cross, gathered my mat and shoes and took a powder at that point. I am now looking for a pilates class. I’ll work on my spiritual growth at Mass, receiving the sacraments, in my prayer group or bible study. I do exercises to keep my balance and mobility intact and that’s all I’m looking for at the gym.😃

Friend

Pilates is based on yoga too, and borrows much of it.
There’s dangers in pilates too.
I was at a talk on this from a guy who converted from new age

Since he was into New Age, it would have been natural for him to go to yoga classes that included a spiritual element. That doesn’t mean everyone else does.

Historically

Yoga is a religion. Predating christianity.
Its.focus through every action and mantra is to enter a trance like state to unite with a snake goddess.
Fact.

Should catholics be doing a sport, that is actually words and actions prayers intended to unite with a snake goddess?

The speaker also said, those who do yoga have a rise in adultery, because of the snake goddess’s location in the body when it is invited in.

So the argument exists, “Really, if I just do yoga for fun, am I inviting in the snake goddess?”

Answer:
Ouiji board for fun? Even aetheists who use a Ouiji board need deliverance afterwards.
Reiki? The reiki prayers are in a language the speaker doesn’t understand, yet the prayers invite satan to heal at the cost of the persons soul.
Grave matter can be committed without full knowledge, but that does not mean a person can enter into a new age practice without full knowledge and suffer from no deliverance issues. Aetheists who use a ouiji board may not have the knowledge its satanic, but they will still need catholic deliverance from evil spirits afterwards.

Committing grave matter without knowledgr doesn’t mean there are no repercussions or side effects for the soul.

So knowledge and intent cannot be separated from actions and words that are pagan worship to a snake goddess.

I trust you have a verified, verifiable, statistical source for your claim about adultery?

The spoken word of a man who delved into New Age for years until he began to experience attacks of demonic possession, and needed to confess and receive catholic exorcism / deliverance from the Spirit of Divination. Who now is living a life on divine providence, researching, writing books, and giving talks on all new age/ occult practices to show why these things are spiritually dangerous,

So you don’t have a verified source, just the opinion of one person. There’s no actual numbers to back up your claim.

I’m sorry, but it’s very difficult to take your opinions on yoga seriously, when you’ve shown you know next to nothing about the physical yoga as practiced by many Christians. Christians who are not now, and never have been adulterers, or worshippers of a snake goddess, or in any way led toward Hinduism.

You have a blessed day. Goodbye.

Doesn’t change the fact of grave matter.

The yoga poses and mantras are the same as they were were 5,000 years ago, with the explicit intention of uniting to a snake goddess. Its was created as a religious practice to unite with that snake goddess, it was never created 5,000 years ago to be a sport.

Is there any movement of the body that can be done that is inherently and intrinsically evil?
