The Protestant station in our old town was pretty much all music which i loved (the great sound of secular with the values mom and dad espouse!). They were fairly ecumenical in that they would play evangelization messages from the Catholic Church explaining Catholic belief in salvation in 30 short seconds, among other things. The only humorous Protestant quality was the commercials for a local Church. They used the song “Celebrate Good Times” by Three Dog Night? as the background music and invited you to come “celebrate” at their church each Sunday, where formal dress is not required.

:rotfl: I’ve heard that song played at every wedding reception for a Catholic family member or friend!

We’ll actually we don’t have any Protestant or Catholic radio stations in Melbourne, can’t afford it I guess. We only have a strange thing called a “Christian” radio station at www.lightfm.com.au

They both have to share their time on it:
Hence sunday morning’s schedule:
traditional hymns from 6am (Appeals mostly to Anglicans and Catholics)
mass at 7 o’clock (Catholic)
a guest speaker at 8am(Code word for “Prosperity Gospel preacher”, although in order to keep the Catholic crowd tuned in they try to go for a balanced non-anti-catholic protestant)
continuous contemporary praise and worship music from 9am(Every Protestant Denomination)

I don’t think we have any Catholic radio stations in the Baltimore-Washington area 😦 . I listen to 2 Christian stations - and just turn the channel when their “bible preachers” come on.

I checked their schedule on their website. They only list programs between 5 a.m. and 12 midnight. Are they off the air between midnight and 5 a.m.?

When they talk about a “dear Catholic brother/sister”. Protestant believers are never, ever referred to by denomination- you never hear “a dear Baptist brother” or a “dear Methodist sister.”

When the show is interrupted every thirty seconds by a plea to send a “love offering”, in return for which they will send you a copy of the host’s latest book.

When they continually speak in catch phrases.

When every sentence is punctuated by “Amen?” (African American hosts, and especially women, do this constantly for some reason. I’ve heard the theory that it gives them a brief pause to think of what they’re going to say next.)

I am in Omaha and we have a fantastic Catholic station KVSS 88.9.FM. They with the Knights of Columbus just had Jason Evert speaking at local schools and churches it was wonderful. We do need to support those stations because you never know who is flipping through and hear something that brings them to the church.🙂
It happens to all of us. We are listening to a religious broadcast which we think is Catholic, when all of a sudden you hear … … Are you Saved? … Do you have a personal relationship with Jesus? … the Word of God Alone … Sola Scriptura … Marian apparitions are demonic — Religious icons are demonic — Family Radio — The preacher spends two hours talking about two verses in the Bible.

  1. It features a “faith healer.” Enough said on this one.
  2. It discourages Darwin’s theories by giving another suggestion for creation (I grew up in a Catholic School system that taught it, and I tend to not hear these on any Catholic media I watch-but there is not much Catholic media off cable in this area).

My FH works for a Christian radio station, one of the few that actually have an audience and play decent music in Canada. I don’t listen in the daytime because they have some programs that are just plain annoying and cheese-over-the-top. I have never heard anything directly objectionable toward Catholicism on the air. In the evenings it’s aimed for the younger crowd so it’s just rockin’ tunes which I’m fine with.

Fortunately none of the staff try to push FH toward a “Bible-believing” church, they seem to respect his decision to convert (though in the back of their minds they probably think I forced him to do it) and mostly are just misinformed about Catholicism. Granted I don’t know a whole lot about Pentecostalism so it goes both ways 😉

No, we don’t. But a group called Holy Spirit Communications is trying to establish a station in Maryland. There was one on AM 1570 in Towson a number of years ago, but that’s now a sports station.

I listen to protestant radio station once in a blue moon for just a few minutes out of plain curiosity. They do have some good things to say sometimes but for the most part are very anti-Catholic. 😦 There used to be this station here called “The Fish” and I didn’t like that station because of the Protestant music they played. I just don’t take a liking to that music. 😦

I listen to Relevant Radio here at home and also online when they go off the air in the evening. I like all the shows on there. 👍 There was only one time where I would not agree if I would’ve listened that day. I didn’t hear but my mom was furious when Alex Jones messed up big time about our Virgin Mother. She loved Alex Jones and his conversion story and how he brought a lot of his Pentecostal congregation into the Catholic Church with him. He became a Deacon. We watched his conversion story and then also watched “Dinner With Alex Jones” and we loved them both. Alex really knows his Catholic stuff now but then why would he mess up big time about Mary? … okay, that was off topic… sorry. :o

Back on track… Relevant Radio never bashes Protestantism. They do mention that they are mistaken when it comes to certain things but they never bad mouth anyone.
So why would a Protestant station bash Catholicism when they know nothing about what the Catholic Church teaches? Not good. :nope:

Of course I also like EWTN Radio! 👍 Mother Angelica is on right now on EWTN Radio and Father Larry Richards is on right now on Relevant Radio. 7:16 PM Central Time.

There is a station here in Cleveland called The Fish, WHFM 95.5 FM. It is all music, but I’ve never noticed anything overtly “Protestant” about it. They don’t have any preaching, just music. It’s a commercial station run by Salem Communications, not a non-profit station. They are not at all anti-Catholic. In fact they are one of the sponsors of the annual Diocesan Catholic family festival called “The Fest” which is put on by the Diocesan vocations program. It is held on the seminary grounds and has Christian artists, including big names like Steven Curtis Chapman as well as local Christian performers who are picked by a contest. The local artists are Catholic and Protestant. The Fest concludes with Mass, followed by fireworks. “The Fish” station promotes “The Fest” on the air as well as by money contributions.

Nope we can not and should not bash them. We can with Charity (love) defend our faith by showing their inconsistancy and error of interpreting scripture. But to bash them is contrary to Love. People who get bashed gets their danders up (emotions), their minds close and refuse to listen to the seeds that the Holy Spirit can spout in them.

Go Bears.

Nobody should be bashing anybody. There’s a dying world out there and we have a clear mandate. We are to feed the hungry, clothe the naked and bring the Gospel to all people.

I was evangelical for 25 years and Orthodox for 12 before entering RCIA. I’ve been around the barnyard hermeneutically. These hangups on Biblical interpretation are sapping the strength out of the Body of Christ living in America.

He called us to better than this.

It’s not that the songs/music are Protestant. What I don’t like is the sound of the song. I don’t know what it is… is it the tempo, the voices, the sound of the music… I don’t know… all of the above perhaps? I just don’t like that music. It doesn’t help either that some of the lyrics are very protestant but even if I’m flipping stations (which is very rare) if I happen to hear that kind of sound/music I change it right away before even knowing if it’s Christian, secular or Catholic Christian.

I posted in a thread called Christian Rock in the Popular Media forum. I put a list of Catholic/Christian artists that I like. Most of them are Catholic but I do have two on there that are Protestant. One of them, David Jeremiah, I just like a select few from one of his albums. The only reason why I’ve even heard of this man is because a show that I watch on EWTN called Parables plays his song called “How Great Thou Art.” I’ve always loved that song no matter who sings it. Well as long as they don’t butcher it. David Jeremiah really sings that song well. I went to his website and listened to some of the songs so I just downloaded the 4 songs that I like from his CD. There is one other artist on my list. I only have one CD from him. His name is Joe Hand. But again, I just like a few of his songs. All the others on my list are very Catholic and have a different sound to their music and voices. It’s almost as if I could spot a protestant song from a Catholic one. I don’t know what it is.

I love Donna Cori Gibson. Here is a webpage from her website where you can listen to one minute snippets of her songs. Check it out! 👍 I think you’ll like what you hear.

Here’s the rest of my list (this time with links);
  • Donna Cori Gibson
  • Tatiana
  • Daughters of St. Paul
  • The Foxhoven Family
  • The Hanson Family
  • Michael Joncas
  • The Cathedral Singers
  • Joe Hand - the one CD that I have
  • Angel Gutiérrez - no website, nor does he sell his music here in the US. He is from South America. He sang in our Catholic Mass one time and we all cried. He sang his own “Footprints of God” after Communion. He sang in Spanish and yet many cried. I spotted him outside so I approached him and bought 4 CDs and one cassette tape of his. Many wanted to buy his CDs and we asked him why he didn’t sell them. He said the church did not allow him to advertise that he had them on hand to sell. WHAT?!! Why not?! Legalities I guess.
  • David Jeremiah - downloaded only a few from this CD. I especially love “How Great Thou Art.” I get goosebumps when I hear him sing it.
  • Rose of Sharon Media - when you click you will hear a snippet of one of my favorites, “Dona Nobis Pacem.” Click on “music” on the website and you’ll see more CDs from which you can hear more snippets.
  • Monastic Choir Of The Abbey Of Notre Dame - scroll down to hear snippets.
  • Most any Gregorian Chant (I have lots) - Nothing better than Gregorian chant in my opinion.
  • Most any “Catholic Classics” CD (I have most of those)
Those are just to name some that I have.
That’s pretty much my taste in Catholic/Christian music.

I think I just like music that “rocks” a little harder. I mentioned that I like Third Day, P.O.D. and Relient K. I am more of a GenX rocker and used to go to a lot of punk/metal shows back in the 1990’s so I prefer something with more of a rock sound.

Oh, 🙂 well that’s cool. 😃

I like classic rock but I’d rather listen to ‘secular’ classic rock then have that sound in a Christian song. I just don’t think it goes together. I like some pop music too and I’d rather hear some Christian music more on the pop side than on the classic rock side… does that make any sense to you? :o But even then, not for actual Worship.

I also like adult contemporary music and/or soft rock and I’d rather hear Christian songs with the adult contemporary sound or SR but not too much on that side. I’m just confusing you more right? :o

Anyway, I just think that everything should have its place including music. I don’t think that rock, punk, metal or any music like that should be in the same category as music or a song with a Christian message for Worshipping God. If such music does have a Christian message then it should only be for entertainment purposes but not for Worshipping God. Worship for me is very sacred and therefore should not have the sound of rock or punk to it.

The book of Revelation has only one instrument and that is the harp. We for the most part, only have one instrument during Mass and that is the organ. Now there are other instruments in some other Catholic parishes but I really don’t like that. Some have guitar some have guitar and drum and some have violin and others have brass instruments also. The violin isn’t so bad but I still prefer the organ. The organ along with Gregorian Chant is the best. If we have Gregorian Chant then the organ is not really that necessary but it does add to it and makes it that much nicer. 🙂
