It seems like I love the last one I saw the most-but here’s my list:

Favorite Shows I’ve seen on Broadway
Wicked
Rent
Les Miz-I heard a priest do a talk on the redemption theme in this musical and I’ve never thought of it the same way since.
A Chorus Line
Chicago
The Lion King
Ragtime
Beauty and the Beast
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
Cats
Phantom
Sunset Boulevard

Favorite Movie Musicals
Sound of Music
Singin in the Rain
Chicago
Rent
All That Jazz
Moulin Rouge
Sweeney Todd
A Hard Day’s Night

Forgot to check in after seeing “High School Musical” - we really enjoyed it. Some in our group had seen the movie version and others hadn’t and we all equally enjoyed it. It’s as lightweight of a show as there is but the music and dancing is entertaining. If this show had been written 60 years ago - couldn’t you see Judy Garland and Micky Rooney playing the leads?

Fun thread!!!

Les Miserables is a great favorite; the redemptive story is so moving, the music fantastic…I cry at the end every single time.

I also love South Pacific, Camelot, Lion King, Sound of Music, Oklahoma, Phantom of the Opera…I’m sure there are more.

Movie-musical wise - White Christmas, Holiday Inn, Brigadoon. It’s not Christmas around here without White Christmas, and both of our girls adore it, too. We visited Rosemary Clooney’s home in Kentucky and saw several of the costumes (her “Sisters, Sisters” blue dress and fan among them) and our younger daughter about fainted from excitement. I think this movie takes us to a lovely, happy place, so much more innocent than today.

I love Holiday Inn and always think it gets short shrift compared to White Christmas (which I merely like). I was at a Trivia Night and the question was what movie introduced the song White Christmas and I was the only one who knew it was Holiday Inn. I wish they’d make a stage version of this one. The Muny (outdoor theater in St. Louis) has done White Christmas and I was really disappointed with it.

The Sound of Music, but I also like Singing In the Rain, Annie, Fiddler on the Roof, Hello Dolly, Oklahoma, South Pacific, Guys and Dolla and The King and I.

My 16 year old son is going with our parish youth group that same night to sit in the free seats.
Ah memories. I saw my first Muny show, “Li’l Abner”, from the free seats about 1960.

Saw several shows in the 70s. Was sitting in the 2nd row the opening night of “Anything Goes” when Ann Miller was injured, and the show was stopped.

Agreed 👍

I know that we enjoyed the show as well. Having seen the movie I was aware of most of what was going on and the storyline behind it. I know that my daughter had a great time and talked about going to another showing of it, but we never did.

I know I’m gonna get excommunicated for this…I can’t stand The Sound of Music. I am sick to death of it.

My favourite movie musicals:
  • Grease
  • Little Shop of Horrors
  • Fiddler on the Roof
  • The Wizard of Oz
When I was a kid, I loved Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

I’ve only seen three musicals in a theatre:
  • *I Do, I Do - with Peter Palmer and Mary Lou Farrell; I was a kid, don’t remember much about it
  • Cats
  • Mamma Mia! (Toronto cast)*
Musicals I really want to see:
*
South Pacific
The Education of HYMAN KAPLAN
The Phantom of the Opera
Les Miserables
Around the World in 80 Days

Can’t think of any more off the top of my head. except maybe…

*The Book of Numbers: The Musical!
*

“Godspell”…I love the music…have for over thirty years.

“Phantom of the Opera”…fantastic story and music.

More recently I like “Once”.

Umm… do you have to have watched the musical or can you just pick a particular song (or songs) you liked from it? :o

Okay, I’ll be honest, I admit that I don’t really watch musicals but two songs right now came to mind.

All that Jazz
- Chicago (1930’s culture is quite interesting 👍 )

Epiphany - Sweeney Todd (I connect strangely well to this song for some scary reason… O_O;; )

mmm…grease is a definate but does Sister Act 1&2 count??
well…i prefer the one with Lauryn Hill!

Into the Woods without a doubt. I could do without the cheating but the takes on “Happily ever after” are so…perfect.

(I may be a little biased since I played Cinderella in high school lol)

Sweeney Todd live is great, I loved Ragtime:School Edition, Wicked, and I’ve always been a huge fan of CATS.

My least favorites are Les Miz, The Wiz, Carousel, and Honk! has to be the most boring musical I’ve ever seen.

Oh! I like Spamalot a lot  too!

first ones I was part of in school or college
Sound of Music
Oklahoma
Brigadoon
HMS Pinafore (before 1963 my HS did “operettas”. beginning in 1964 they were called “musicals”)
Fantastiks
Anything Goes
My Fair Lady
Carousel
Bye Bye Birdie
The

The stage versions, not not **not **the movies!!

A Chorus Line
The Fantasticks (I saw it off-off Broadway about 45 years ago!)
Sweeney Todd (on DVD, with Angela Lansbury)
Wonderful Town (Leonard Bernstein’s musical of “My Sister Eileen”)

Ruthie

P.S. I’m also a major Gilbert & Sullivan fan, but that’s a topic for a “favorite operetta” thread, if anyone wants to start one.
