Burnley is a town 8 miles up the road from here . In one of its parks is Towneley Hall . It was the residence of the Towneley family who remained Catholic despite the reformation . There is a chapel in the hall , and until a Catholic church was built in Burnley in 1846 it was used by the Catholics of Burnley as their church . The hall now belongs to the town of Burnley .

The photos show the hall and the altar of the chapel . The last picture shows the way into a priest hole , now covered by the pane of glass .

Maybe that’s where the priest would hide? You know, with the Reformation and all.

A hiding place for the priest during the persecutions during and after the reformation took place in Europe. Catholicism was forbidden in many places and the ordained and lay could be sentenced to death if they remained Catholics. They could convert into protestants. Several left the country as another alternative to remain Catholic.

@EricF where is this church - the modern one and where is the rural church? are they both
Catholic? what are their names?

I think the cathedral is gorgeous. And I’m very excited to become a parishioner there. It’s my fiance’s family church.
The cathedral in Lafayette is beautiful.
It’s absolutely gorgeous.

Can you imagine having to repaint the ceilings/murals in some of these Churches?

For a modern church, I like it quite a bit. The interior is much prettier than I would have expected had I been passing by on the outside.

Thanks you! The style of the Cathedral in the middle of the green, and the architecture, remind me that;

Sanctuaire des Tourailles, France (in the middle of nowhere!)

And this, Sanctuaire de Montligeon, France (for the souls in the purgatory. In the middle of nowhere, but less than the first).
