St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Los Angeles. It was built in 1952 by Charles Skouras and his brothers. Born in Greece, he had made a vow when he first came to Los Angeles in 1933 that if he became a success in show business he would build a great cathedral in thanksgiving. He became the head of 20th Century Fox Film Corporation’s West Coast Division, and he honored his vow.

I’ve been to Mass a few times at this fine church, the Church of the Good Shepherd in Beverly Hills. For those interested in show biz and Hollywood lore, the website Aleteia just printed a nice article about all the movie stars and celebrities who had a connection with this church, which I’ve linked below.

About 1960 we had a day out from our Jesuit college to Wales , where we visited Holywell and St Beuno’s College which was then used for the training of Jesuits but is now St Beuno’s Jesuit Spirituality Centre . Before getting to the college for refreshments we went to the top of a hill to visit the tiny Rock Chapel .

St. Monica Catholic Church in Santa Monica, California, is another of my favorites. The parish was established in 1886, and the present church was built in 1925. The church rectory was used in the 1944 film “Going My Way” with Bing Crosby, and the character of old Fr. Fitzgibbon, who was played by Barry Fitzgerald, was based on the former pastor of St. Monica’s Church, Msgr. Nicholas Conneally, who was pastor there from 1923 to 1949.

One of my favorites. We have a vacation cabin about an hour north of Santa Fe.
 
St Aloysius Jesuit Church in Glasgow , Scotland . Outside is not attractive , but inside it’s a different kettle of fish .

St. Augustine Catholic Church in Culver City, California. The parish was originally served from St. Monica’s Church in nearby Santa Monica, so it made sense to name this parish after her son. The present church was built in 1958, and Bishop Fulton Sheen spoke at the dedication, since he been a seminarian with St. Augustine’s pastor at that time, Msgr. James McLaughlin. The church is across the street from the old MGM movie studio lot, which is now the studios of Sony Pictures.

And one of the most profound events of Pope John Paul II’s visit to the UK was when he celebrated the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick in Southwark Cathedral . As one BBC commentator would say , " It tugged at the heartstrings of the nation . "

Sacred Heart Chapel on the campus of Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. I grew up near there, and for a time during the 1970s my family would often go to Mass there instead of at our home parish, since their Mass times worked better with everyone’s schedule.
