The thing about Santander Cathedral is that some locals, including my host mom, dislike it because it is not as beautiful as Madrid’s and other comparable churches due to its style (Early Gothic). While I didn’t care that much for its exterior, I liked its cloisters and interior.

From the outside that looks almost Old Norse rather than Christian. It’s a beautiful structure, though.

St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church in Madaba, Jordan. It houses an ancient mosaic map of Palestine and a miraculous three-handed icon of the Blessed Virgin that is ostensibly said to cure cancer. I made a pilgrimage to this church a few years ago, and stumbled accidentally upon the icon and it’s guardian, an old priest who told me the tale of how it cured a member of their congregation of cancer.

It has a rather substantial intricate marble alter. You can’t see it in this picture. The story I was told: when it was added in the 60s, the pastor made sure it became the sacrifice of the Mass.

I like visiting the Mission San Fernando Rey de Espana, the closest of the 21 California Missions to where I live. Established in 1797, it was repaired and restored after several earthquakes and periods of neglect. The altarpiece came from the Chapel of St. Philip Neri in Ezcaray, Spain, and dates from 1687. It was sent to Los Angeles in 1934 and installed at the Mission in 1991.

The outward structure is such an amazing contrast to the modern buildings all around. It’s an amazing cathedral.

Isnt it? I adore these types of churches. IMO, the ancient-ness of the building helps in transporting the Mass-attending believer back to Calvary.
