Just into the mountains north of Santa Fe, New Mexico is the Santuario de Chimayo. The church has a rich, fascinating history, and the reverence and palpable spirituality rival that of Assisi. (Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

Saint Cado, a 6th-century monk, hermit, bishop and martyr, lived here for a while. He’s know in Wales as saint Cadoc and the founder of the Llancarfan abbey.

The deacon from my previous parish will soon be ordained a priest there.

Church 1 out of 2:

Kanda Catholic Church located in central Tokyo, formally known as Catholic Church of St. Francis Xavier, was the pro-cathedral of the Archdiocese of Tokyo before the new cathedral was completed in 1964. Although not the most beautiful church, it houses the relic of St. Francis Xavier, which is displayed once a year during Christmas midnight Mass. It also houses the cathedra of the first Japanese cardinal Peter Doi, which is on public display. The stained glass windows also feature a mixed style of both Japanese and Western flavours. The current church building celebrated its 90th ‘birthday’ in December 2018, and is the second oldest Catholic church building in Tokyo, after Tsukiji parish.

Church 2 out of 2:

Katase Catholic Church, officially known as St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, is a unique traditional Japanese-style church located near Enoshima Island, in Shonan seaside resort area. Its unique architecture makes it easily mistaken for a Buddhist temple from the outside, except the angels and the cross above the main entrance, making it very unique even in Japan, since most churches here are built in modern style after the 1950s, and the rest are built in traditional Western style. The current pews were installed after WW2, replacing the original tatami straw floor where parishioners used to sit on.

Pope Francis just elevated the San Buenaventura Mission in Ventura, CA, to the status of a minor basilica. Founded in 1782 by St. Junipero Serra, it is the first basilica church in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and the 88th basilica church in the United States. It’s a beautiful church near the ocean that I’ve visited several times. St. Bonaventure, pray for us! St. Junipero Serra, pray for us!

In this church is mumified human arm hanging on the wall. According to legend it is the arm of the thief who tried to steal a crown from head of statue of Virgin Mary placed in the church. But statue moved and grabbed his hand and did not let him go. In the morning monks found him and tried to free him but without success. So his arm had to be cut off and was hanged in the church.

An old, old Catholic Church located in one of the most beautiful places in the USA…Leadville, Colorado!

A dear friend of mine is probably the son of the doctor who delivered her.
Leadville is indeed beautiful. It’s tough to beat the Rockies for scenery and the mining history in this country is fascinating, as is the history of the priests who travelled on foot and horseback to share the faith and administer the sacraments.

My husband and I have been there twice in our RV…we love the brisk, cold air! The beauty is wonderful! We were planning another trip there this year but the virus got in the way…another time…

Never heard the story about the arm before. That’s pretty fascinating!
