Also, I’d be interested to hear your opinion as to why it is that most of the world finds the view presented above completely unconvincing-there are literally only two places in the world where it’s common, Israel and the United States. So why is it that most commentators simply do not accept this version of the events?

I only quoted the individuals who actually drafted the resolution. What you are really saying is that none of the arab nations or nations that were influenced at the time by the USSR agreed.

Your position requires us to decide that Israel should have ignored the massive troop buildup on its borders and the daily rhetoric from the President of Syria about its destruction, as well as Syria’s closure of the straits.

May 18, 1967, from “Voice of Arabs” responding to the UN forces withdrawal from the Sinai: “As of today there no longer exists an international emergency force to protect Israel. We shall exercise patience no more. We shall not complain any more to the UN about Israel. The sole method we shall apply against Israel is total war, which will result in the extermination of Zionist existence.”

Sorry, I did not catch that piece-which drafters of 242 think that it does not require the Israeli withdrawal from the post-67 borders?

Also, how come they didn’t make this view known to the Security Council members who voted for it, which uniformly maintain that it requires a withdrawal?

Posting quotes from only one side does not tell you what the environment was-to make sense of it, you need to present a picture of what Israel was doing at the time.

I posted the analysis of a key figure in the Israeli planning for the 1967 war-Menachem Begin. If you read his speech, he not only makes it clear that Israel was not forced into war, but that he believes war to conquer territory is legitimate. The aim of these wars wasn’t to defend Israel only, it was to expand its territory to “liberate the lands” that Begin believed were the property of his country, and not the property of the people who lived there.

When dealing with controversial issues of this kind which raises heated emotions on both sides, it is difficult to find an impartial source of information that all sides can agree upon to be fair and accurate. In my opinion this site contains such an article. It contains several articles from different sources; but the one from the Wikipedia (scroll down the page to see) is the best and most comprehensive. It is quite long, and gives an accurate, and I believe, impartial description of the events.
