That was the year of him AND the Gary Hart insanity, if memory serves me correctly. They both imploded early. Ted led the way and Hart followed soon after.

Funny how things changed. Gary Hart’s scandal was a big deal when I was a little kid… but I doubt he’d be a big deal now.

I wonder about that, actually, in the current climate. Interesting point.

That year was my first presidential election, so I remembered. Ronald Reagsn won by a landslide in 1984.

Yep. I remember that.

I wrote him when he was shot back in 1981. I still have the card I got from the White House.

No, Gary Hart was 1988, but Ted thought about running in '84. '84 was the first time I voted in the presidential election, and I remember that decade well.

Nope. He entertained it in 1984. He was run off and withdrew before he had a chance to attempt to cement it in a primary.

Funny how others remember it as well.

Funny how Newsweek wrote about it. 😉

Chappaquiddick was ALL OVER the place - no matter what he claimed were his concerns.

Entertaining the idea and actually running are two different things.

I hope it doesn’t need explanation.

He didn’t file official papers to run for office.

He entertained the idea and withdrew from making it official to the media.

The headline is misleading if you think he withdrew from a formal run for office.

Anyway, it’s not important with regards to the reasons behind showing the movie.

I suppose it makes some people feel self-righteous. I don’t care to be part of it

I don’t recall any other attempt at running for the democratic nomination before.
I wasn’t born till 1978, but my college history books were quite up-to-date, and mt professors quite politically knowledgeable, and none mentioned a bid by Ted Kennedy for president in the 80s. I’ve even tried to find evidence of it online, but can find none, and I’m a good Internet researcher.

Ted Kennedy only made a formal run for president in 1980 in the democratic primary against Jimmy Carter.
As I posted earlier, Ted Kennedy only made a formal run for president in 1980 in the democratic primary against Jimmy Carter.

The next time he entertained the idea, but never filed official papers to make himself a candidate.

Absolutely right. Biden “entertained” the idea in 2016, but did not run.

You are absolutely right that Edward Kennedy did NOT file any papers declaring his candidacy for president in the time period under discussion.

When “asking” Google when Edward Kennedy ran for president, this answer is given:

1980

1980 presidential campaign. Kennedy finally decided to seek the Democratic nomination in the 1980 presidential election by launching an unusual, insurgent campaign against the incumbent Carter.

You are absolutely correct, Jim. People can say you are not, but research, history books, etc. prove they are wrong and you are not.

I think the reasons behind the movie are the fact that its producers thought it would make them a lot of money! Some people, and I am not one, eat up anything about the Kennedys. They don’t care what it is or whether it’s true or untrue. (I am not pointing to anyone on this forum, just people in general. Some hate the Kennedys passionately; some love them like family. I don’t feel a lot of emotion for them either way since I’m too young for them to have impacted my life directly, and, I’m not particularly interested in the movie. No one but those present know what was said, why certain actions were or were not taken, etc. We know what people claimed. Anything else is just conjecture.)

I didn’t say he was successful in getting out of the primaries. I said he made/discussed a second attempt and was blasted with Chappaquiddick before he even got out the gate.
“Fake news” before the term was even made popular! 🤣
