New York Times: Trump paid no income taxes in 10 out of 15 years beginning in 2000

By Paul LeBlanc, Lauren Fox and Kara Scannell, CNN

Washington (CNN)Donald Trump paid no federal income taxes whatsoever in 10 out of 15 years beginning in 2000 because he reported losing significantly more than he made, according to an explosive report released Sunday by the New York Times.

In both the year he won the presidency and his first year in the White House, Trump paid just $750 in federal income taxes, the Times reported.

Detailing payments gleaned from more than two decades of tax information, the Times report outlines extensive financial losses and years of tax avoidance that deal a blow to the business-tycoon brand Trump has built his political career on.

At a White House briefing Sunday, Trump denied the New York Times story and claimed that he pays “a lot” in federal income taxes.

“I pay a lot, and I pay a lot in state income taxes,” he said.

Trump added that he is willing to release his tax returns once he is no longer under audit by the Internal Revenue Service, which he said “treats me badly.” The President, however, is under no obligation to hold his tax returns while under audit, despite his repeated claims otherwise.

Trump also refused to answer how much he has paid in federal taxes in the briefing and walked out to shouted questions from CNN’s Jeremy Diamond on the topic.

The expansive Times report paints a picture of businessman who was struggling to keep his businesses afloat and was reporting millions in losses even as he was campaigning for President and boasting about his financial success.

According to the newspaper, Trump used the $427.4 million he was paid for “The Apprentice” to fund his other businesses, mostly his golf courses, and was putting more cash into his businesses than he was taking out.

The tax information obtained by the Times also reveals Trump has been fighting the IRS for years over whether losses he claimed should have resulted in a nearly $73 million refund.

In response to a letter summarizing the newspaper’s findings, Trump Organization lawyer Alan Garten told the Times that “most, if not all, of the facts appear to be inaccurate” and requested the documents.

The New York Times said it will not make Trump’s tax-return data public so as not to jeopardize its sources “who have taken enormous personal risks to help inform the public.”

The tax-return data obtained by the newspaper does not include his personal returns for 2018 or 2019.

People like me who willingly pay our fair share of taxes must also be losers and suckers.

As they say, the rich are not like the rest of us … and he is even unlike them, apparently.

It’s not that uncommon for members of the ruling class to avoid taxation. Nearly every election cycle somebody is found out and has to pony up.

The overall takeaway is that he isn’t that great a business person and he owes a lot of debt coming due in the next four years making him a security risk.

Also the tax evasion and involving family members in it.

The article said that even by the standards of the very rich, he paid little or nothing.

Will this effect the election results much? It doesn’t seem like it’s been received as a particularly big deal.

I am not certain how much is actually true.
When going after Trump, I would imagine that the NYT has it’s ducks in a row. Since he’s so litigious, they’re opening themselves up to a lot if they’re wrong.

This story jibes with what we know of other years. In the debate with Hillary in 2016, she said he paid no taxes for two years and he interrupted and said he was smart.

I pretty much believe it. Doesn’t change my view of him, because it can’t go lower.

Question is whether Trump supporters or independents in swing states care.

I wonder how the New York Times was able to get his personal tax returns, especially when the State of New York has been unable to after three years of pursuing them?

I believe then, he said he would release his taxes very soon. ⏱️⌚⏳
If the story is true, he was hiding the fact that he and the IRS are arguing /negotiating over a 72 million dollar refund that the IRS doesn’t believe.
I wonder how the New York Times was able to get his personal tax returns, especially when the State of New York has been unable to after three years of pursuing them.
The Times article says they got them from someone who has them legally. Narrows the list.

The IRS or his accountant?
An IRS employee could go to jail for a long time. The accountant would have to be sued.

I was thinking Mary Trump, but I don’t think she would have 2017. This is recent. Accountant or someone at a bank who needed them for a loan. 15 years is a lot, almost like someone with an ongoing relationship or doing complicated tax work.

To clarify - I don’t know.

Aren’t there some court actions going on in New York involving his taxes?

That’s what I thought - that someone in the Attorney General’s office leaked them but upthread Mike said they have not been able to get possession of the returns?

Apparently Fox doesn’t care.

It’s buried way down on the home page.
