The school’s president and CEO is a Sister, which goes a long way in explaining how the church got to the situation in which it now finds itself. Given that vice principle Zmuda was just terminated because of his gay “marriage” it is hard to imagine on what grounds the part-time employee could be retained given that her action is the same as his. Still, the archbishop was involved in the first case and will be involved in this one so one can reasonably hope that the outcomes will be consistent.
Once again, the level of incomprehension about the church shown by the people involved is breathtaking. Stephanie Merrow, the part-time drama couch planning a same-sex “wedding” this summer, is quoted as saying:* “I’m doing this to support the kids, and what the kids are trying to do is get to the Pope and change the Church,”
*One can only wonder how a Catholic could possibly believe that it is the pope who decides what behaviors are or are not moral and that he could simply decide to declare homosexual behavior acceptable if he chose to do so. Then again, a church that arbitrary wouldn’t be worth belonging to and believing that it is might explain why so many people leave it.
Still, this is another teaching moment and some good could come from the situation if the archbishop uses it as such.

One can only wonder how a Catholic could possibly believe that it is the pope who decides what behaviors are or are not moral and that he could simply decide to declare homosexual behavior acceptable if he chose to do so. Then again, a church that arbitrary wouldn’t be worth belonging to and believing that it is might explain why so many people leave it.

Of course. Part-time drama coach creates full-time soap opera.
Since ++Sartain already showed his cards vis-a-vis Sr. Tracy and the vice principal, he needs to double-down here and order the drama coach fired as well. It’s unthinkable that he folds here, because doing so will set an almost irreversible precedent that if someone is committing a monstrous evil against God and the faith, and scandalizing the “little ones”, they will not only face no consequences, but receive institutional praise while under employment of the same Church.
This is a really big hinge. Pray for ++Sartain and for all involved.

They have almost no choice but to double down…or they will almost certainly open themselves to a sex discrimination claim on top of the sexual preference claim (assuming Washington state allows such a claim). Anyone in business know you have to be consistent. What possible explanation do they have for firing a man and not a woman? Bad publicity? That’ll go over well in the courts.

Certainly this is simply a matter of timing and the drama coach will be fired, there just has not been enough time since she reveled herself. For all the reasons already given Archbishop Sartain will deliver the same verdict to her. Anything less would be hypocritical. All of us who want the Church to survive the attacks on our beliefs need to pray constantly.

I am disappointed that Sr. Tracy seems to be publicly challenging ++Sartain by volunteering that she will take no action regarding the drama coach. It would seem more professionally appropriate to refer inquiries to the Archdiocese, rather than comment on it.
I guess we’ll see soon enough how this plays out.

To be fair, Sr. Tracy doesn’t appear to have commented on it publicly. All the comments attributed to her in the article are second-hand. And the article also says that she will be seeking counsel from the Archdiocese about it (as one would expect).

Here is a link to a news report video and at 00:57 into the video, a student shows her (smart phone?) with the message from the principal. King5 news spoke to the principal and confirmed the statement that she gave permission to the students to share.
Also stated in the video was that the part time drama coach is not under contract and not being paid.

I thought same sex marriage was against the teaching of the Catholic Church…so why would it be allowed in a Catholic school.,aren’t Catholic schools supposed to reflect the teachings of the Catholic Church…that is like a slap in the face to the Church…and how long before same sex couples start challenging the church over discrimination by not allowing them to marry in the Catholic Church…if the consensus of the students in support of the teacher is a reflection of young Catholic thinking then we really need to pray hard for the next generation
