Speculating on thoughts from NRA members and etal:
“The End of the School Year can’t come soon enough”

President Trump, speaking at an unrelated event, just spoke about the shooting at Santa Fe High School. He said shootings like today’s have “been going on too long in our country” and said his administration was “determined to do everything in our power to protect our students, secure our schools, and to keep weapons out of the hands of those who pose a threat to themselves, and to others.”
Trump ain’t gonna do jack _____.

Texas attorney general says “thoughts and prayers of all Texans” are with Santa Fe
Thoughts and Prayers are not going to bring these loved ones back.

Thoughts and Prayers will not prevent it from happening again, much less prevented it from happening in the first place.

Texas congressman “concerned and heartbroken” over shooting in his district

Republican Rep. Randy Weber, who represents the district where the shooting took place, just tweeted that his office was monitoring the situation:
My office and I are following the situation closely, and offering assistance and support. Praying for Santa Fe.
Rep. Weber’s spokeswoman, Emma Polefko, said in a statement to CNN: “The Congressman is concerned and heartbroken about the events that are unfolding in Sante Fe. He is in contact with all school, state, and local officials. We’re offering our full support and assistance to all involved. Right now, we have staff at the scene.”
Talk is cheap. Legislative action is Priceless.

Given the current political climate it’s sad but I can’t tell if this post is in jest or not.

Why do you think legislation would have prevented this?
Legislation to protect schools by bringing all the troops on foreign soil home and using the saved money to provide armed security guards for every school in the USA. With trained professional armed security guards at every school, the killers could be shot down first before they shoot down anyone at the school.
And stricter gun control legislation. There are too many guns out there. Too many school children are being shot dead and each one of their lives is precious. The government has a responsibility to protect the lives of young children attending school. IMHO, protecting these students is more important than going over to Iraq, to Syria, to Afghanistan and all over the world with American armed forces.

You don’t need legislation to do that. Local school boards just need to implement it. The cost of a security guard would be minimal. It would be something like the amount of money spent on five or six students.

That is nebulous. How many guns are enough? What is ‘stricter’?

It is more important. It would be a much better use of resources. Of course it is government schools that seem to be the problem in the first place. This doesn’t seem to happen at private schools. Making government schools more outwardly like prison would be honest. But there are better solutions.

That’s more or less the attitude of those who support the NRA leadership’s viewpoint regarding gun control legislation. It would be funny if it were not so sad and tragic.

Murder is already illegal. Why do you think legislation would have prevented this?
I think those who want legislation “to prevent it” mean legislation banning guns. Those who would die themselves in order to murder aren’t going to stop until there are no more guns to get. Then, of course, they’ll turn to explosives, but at least it won’t be guns.

Are you blaming public schools? You might as well blame rural communities since several of these shootings have occurred there, or Western states. This same kind of tragic event has taken place at private schools as well, including private colleges and universities.

Or three supernumerary administrators.

Absolutely. They are awful places. I don’t think these kinds of mass shootings have taken place at private schools (not counting college). I certainly don’t recall any. There may be some but it doesn’t seem to be many.

I’m not particularly fond of administrators, but why blame the victim here, that is, school officials? Apart from the shooters themselves, it’s the governmental and administrative policies that are to blame.

I’m not blaming victims. School officials aren’t the victims, students are. I do think schools can afford security though. The pork is pretty thick on a lot of them.
