Thanks for your take and information Pat, especially the clips from the Catechism.Hi Brian;
Where my friend do you come up with such a position?
It’s clearly not biblical; nor is it the Official teaching of the Catholic church?
Catholic catechism: 1035 The teaching of the Church affirms the existence of hell and its eternity. Immediately after death the souls of those who die in a state of mortal sin descend into hell, where they suffer the punishments of hell, “eternal fire.” The chief punishment of hell is eternal separation from God, in whom alone man can possess the life and happiness for which he was created and for which he longs."
1036 The affirmations of Sacred Scripture and the teachings of the Church on the subject of hell are a call to the responsibility incumbent upon man to make use of his freedom in view of his eternal destiny. They are at the same time an urgent call to conversion: “Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is easy, that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard, that leads to life, and those who find it are few.”
1037 God predestines no one to go to hell; for this, a willful turning away from God (a mortal sin) is necessary, and persistence in it until the end. In the Eucharistic liturgy and in the daily prayers of her faithful, the Church implores the mercy of God, who does not want “any to perish, but all to come to repentance”:
Allow me to ask you Brian:
W/O being unduly judgmental; how people that you personally know [this is a retorical question]seem absolutely headed to heaven and not hell?
I SUSPECT: far fewer are heading in the RIGHT direction [up-hill], than the easier road, [downohill] to hell. MEISN; secular humanism; abortion; contraceptive sex; divorice; voting for the national- Democratic Party; co-habitaition; adultry; Missing Mass on purpose and so-on:shrug: And this is JUST the short list.
YES; every indication is that MANY, many more are headed to hell than to heaven.
God Bless you,
Pat /PJM
I agree with most of it too.
I didn’t think Brian had “a position” as much as he was asking a question about an admittedly tough teaching about salvation.
His statement about the Church teaching that many would be saved was (I thought) less of a contradiction of this scripture than a recalling of other scriptures like
Many is not “most” and a multitude that no one could count could still be few when compared to a greater crowd that is NOT there (though these are not mentioned).Revelation 7:9 After this I had a vision of a great multitude, which no one could count, from every nation, race, people, and tongue. They stood before the throne and before the Lamb, wearing white robes and holding palm branches in their hands.
Anyway thanks to both you and Brian for leading me to ponder all this.
Pondering is not an end in itself of course but is good for deciding which road to take.
