a short sleeved shirt that’s clean and not covered with slogans or sports
That sounds like a personal preference, not an issue of modesty. God forbid someone wears a Baltimore Ravens jersey to the grocery store.

I wonder if those young ladies with the duchess were dancers? Those clingy tops look like leotards to me.

I was wondering that too. I don’t think the dresses look very flattering.

I was specifically referring to clothing at Mass. Outside that, I have no issue with sports or with clean slogans. Have had to deal with far too many offensive and even obscene ball caps, T shirts, etc.

Skirts above the knee are not modest in general…the Vatican gave guidelines on modesty and skirts should be past the knee at the absolute minimum 🙂 personally I wear mid calf or longer, based on the counsel from St Padre Pio (8 inches below knee or longer). This is so that when you sit down or move, the skirt still covers enough.

As a man I live tennis skirts. As a Catholic I don’t appreciate them. That’s all you need to know.

What’s fun to think about is that in Edwardian Britain, the ladies loved to play tennis. In nice long skirts.

Personally back in the day when I’d be out playing tennis with one of those shorter skirts it can be extremely uncomfortable; you’re always worried that ‘something will show’ as you move. I mean, MEN don’t go around in Speedos playing tennis, or wearing little floppy skirts. If real equality is achieved then why aren’t men and women wearing shorts and tops both, instead of just the men? Why are women required to wear ‘tennis skirts’ that, if they were originally meant to show the woman as ‘feminine’ and modest, are now anything but?

whooo…
You will get any sort of opinion here, and a lot of “it’s not a sin to wear X and Y…”

there is no definite acceptable criterias, as it depend on culture, time and place.

But well, there is no chance I will said you that tennis skirts are modest for a Catholic girl.
it’s obvious that modest with something so short is an oxymoron.

I would add I only wear ankle lenght skirt. Well, no, I have also only one dress that are at middle calf, but I wear it with tights or leggins in the winter.

Black tights versus naked legs can make a difference in what can be considered as modest too.

I think it’s not only a worry. basically the person wearing it should agree that everything will show!
And wear something inside that is appropriate to show, like a short.

When I watched professional match, I see the skirt that is flying at every racket stroke!

IIRC, St. Padre Pio would not hear the confessions of women whose dresses/skirts were not at least 8 inches below the knee.
He also forbade shorts on men of any age who came to his confessional. Somehow we never hear about that.
I don’t know a ton about Padre Pio, so bear with me. How did he know? Wouldn’t he have heard confessions behind a screen? Did he have some kind of a sixth sense about this?

St Pio had several miraculous gifts, including bilocation and the gift of ‘seeing into the heart’ of a person. Of course all those gifts came through God, it’s not as if St. Pio did all these things ‘on his own.”

Personally coming from a young Catholic women my rule is if my index ,middle, and ring finger are all touching each other and are placed exactly right above my knee , and if my skirt does not touch my index finger then I will not wear the skirt. that’s the standard that I was taught in Catholic school and that’s a standard I keep for skirts.
