A nondenominational church planning 911 Quran-burning event.

Having once been a part of the journalism field, I can spot a ‘media-created event’ pretty quickly. And that is what this is…a media created event.
This guy is a cult leader with a small following down in florida who now has his 15 minutes thanks to Fox, CNN, and a host of others. In the old days a responsible editor would never give him the time of day let a alone a story. But today, everything is put into the mill. I guess riots will give them something to do.
I’ll tell you this, if there is ‘blood’ on anyone’s hands, the news media can simply look into the bathroom mirror.

Agreed, and it’s yet another reason why I disagree with this whole Quran-burning thing.

Hopefully, the violence that results from this will be negligible, non-lethal, and blow over quickly.

Amen to that! This guy is a real goofball and I hope the Muslims won’t over-react to his stupid, self-serving, unChristian gesture. The only trouble is, that they seem to over-react to a lot of things, especially in Afghanistan, so I really worry about our troops over there.
 
I myself can’t see producing any positive results. This is going to cause one massive uproar. If he does go through with it, his church will be rubble by the end of the month from ppl seeking revenge.

The problem is many people do not realize they are being played like a violin by a manipulative media. At best, this is a local story that would not get beyond the area had it not been for the internet and national media attention.
When I worked in a newspaper back in the 1980s, we would have ‘slow news days’. The remedy was to always look up the local whackos (KKK, skinheads, snake-handlers, ect.) and viola! A news story is born.
It still puts a smile on my face to this day when I hear the Fox announcer (who has a very annoying voice BTW) say “The story EVERYBODY is talking about”!!!

So if I go down to the local bar, deli, church hall, office water fountain, they’ll ALL be talking about IT. Right? Wrong.
Then who is “everybody”?
Everybody in the NEWSROOM.
They choose the topic, choose the permamaters. give it lotsa of attention and call it “news”.
What is the real stroy? A sad sorry little man in Florida needs attention. Like Phelps in Kansas he needs medication, not attention.

That’s very interesting about the news stories, and I’m sure you are correct. Another thing with news is it is very innaccurate. If you’ve ever witnessed a crime or an incident, it usually comes out nothing like the way you saw or heard it in the news!
 
I don’t understand why people think this will “add fuel to the fire.” Will burning a Koran make the aim of a sniper 20% better? Will it make an IED twice as deadly? [hat tip to my buddy for these examples] These extremists despise us and burning their holy book isn’t going to change that. We were told repeatedly by the media that the election of Pres. Obama was going to change how the U.S. is viewed in the world–how’s that worked out for us?

From a Christian perspective, I find the act of burning the Koran abhorrent.

From a secular perspective, I see nothing wrong with it. The dominant culture in the U.S. despises religion (other than the state sponsored secular one), so it only stands to reason that attacking Islam in such a blatant way is perfectly acceptable.

The problem lies in the fact that the dominant culture really only despises Christianity and Orthodox Judaism. Displaying a crucifix in urine or the Virgin Mary covered in feces is high art, but burning a Koran is bad? Burning the American flag is free speech, but burning a Koran is not? Surely I’m not alone in seeing the blatant hypocrisy.

Why do we fear repercussions from terrorists over this act? These are people who think that honor killings and female genital mutilation are great things–how is it possible that any rational human being takes them seriously?

I don’t fear repurcussions for myself. I fear it for others. The repurcussions will not likely be here in the US, but elsewhere. Which would complicate beyond imagination our existing efforts overseas.

But not only the military. Those snipers aren’t going to get more accurate, no. But in other areas where the war is not going on - and in countries who we consider allies - there just may have been small wars after this. I just hope that indeed the pastor will not burn the Quran, as has been stated above…

I would love to have been a fly on the wall for that meeting.

But really, what is it going to change? Are these terrorists any less likely to commit their atrocities if this Koran burning doesn’t take place? Really? I just don’t believe it. It’s not like these people are rational. They’ve proven that through past actions; to believe otherwise is to delude ourselves.

I would say anyone taking someone’s Religion rather it our Religion or not and burning it as an act of Violence. And how I feel he is teaching it is by asking his Church to help participate in this act. It is sure not an act of Good Will!!

This is supposed to be America. THe Land of the Free. We are free to worship whatever God we choose. Does this Man realize how much truth and how much of Gods word he is burning up. The QU’RAN has alot of Gods truth in it. Alot!!

It is an act of symbolic speech. It physically hurts no one. It prevents no one from practicing their religion. It means nothing. It’s not an act of good will, but not it’s violent. Ink and paper can be replaced. Human life can not.

This is the land of the free. People can burn flags, Bibles, and Korans, but that doesn’t prevent anyone from cherishing and living what they represent.Getting upset only gives such acts more power. If this man didn’t have the media acting as his personal publicist, he would’ve burned a few books, no one would’ve known about it, and no harm would’ve been done.

My guess is that this is planned all along. Its just a publicity stunt. Trying to get free advertisement of his little church.

He’ll be a local ‘hero’ for the ‘stand’ that he took. He’ll get some new members and money in the coffers.
