A serious issue in Paul's "Epistle to the Galatians"!

Perhaps you may want to go a few verses back. In Verse 22, Paul quotes “It is written…”. The Bible is a collection of various writings that is inspired by the HS no doubt. But that does not mean every sentence is uttered by the HS.
I have read all Galatians 4, even in Arabic!, but I could not find any convincing reason for Paul not to mention Sarah’s name, considering that the verse itself is not a divine teaching or a ritual guidance.

And of course, the author of 2nd Maccabees was a prophetically inspired editor of some other guy named Jason’s uninspired five volume book – which goes to show that God is truly impartial and doesn’t treat humans the way we expect!
 I did not understand that part, please explain.

What is the difference between getting revelation and being guided by the Holy Spirit?
A revelation (something revealed/as John the Apostle got on the Island of Patmos) is regarding ‘the word’ - being guided by the Holy Spirit usually happens after you have waited on God and are sensitive to the spirits’ leading.

Sam, I am struggling to help you. First of all, I am not able to understand why you are so fixated on Paul for not mentioning Sarah’s name.
  1. If you were Paul, how would you have rephrased it to make it seem palatable to you? Would it change the meaning that will substantially change one’s interpretation of what he said? In fact he was not trying to educate the Gentiles on Genesis at all if you notice.
  2. Since you just stated the verse is not a divine teaching or a ritual guidance, why is the manner of phrasing something so important that it becomes a serious issue with you? Perhaps if you can explain the importance of this we can better understand your angle. This is not a particularly difficult verse to understand. Perhaps Paul thought it unnecessary to do a full quote since everyone understood the whole scenario? Genesis is clearly written in the Jewish Scriptures so there is nothing for him to hide or omit and he didn’t attempt to do that either or try to change historical interpretation of that verse. Remember that he was a Pharisee by training.
Looking forward to your reply.

Sam, I am struggling to help you…
😊 Thank you ericc.
  1. If you were Paul, how would you have rephrased it to make it seem palatable to you?
I personally think that verse is not inspired by the Holy Spirit, that is why it’s ambiguous!, if it had been really inspired by the Holy Spirit, then it would be completely different and maybe that story itself would not have mentioned at all, because why would GOD re-quote a racial discrimination verse for an incident which will never reoccur again!
  1. Since you just stated the verse is not a divine teaching or a ritual guidance, why is the manner of phrasing something so important that it becomes a serious issue with you?
Because of the allegation by Islam that the Bible is “corrupted”, God in Quran accuse the Jews and Christians of corrupting the Bible by displacing its words, and that exactly fits that verse by Paul…😦

😊 Thank you ericc.

You mean the Genesis verse is not inspired by the Holy Spirit? Or even Paul’s? How would you know and determine that it is not or you think it shouldn’t be in there? It depends on your personal value-judgement? That is a dangerous road to take my friend. You should not pick and choose which verses should be there or not. Otherwise, everyone can create their own bibles which unfortunately some did.

God chooses certain people for certain purposes/duties/responsibilities. I wouldn’t call that discrimination. Hagar was after all a slave girl with not many rights. And see how she look with contempt on Sarai the minute she conceived? Not very wise of her to treat her mistress that way isn’t it? And she lived didn’t she and fruitful too I must add. In another culture or tribe during those times, she would be killed instantly.

Sorry for repeating, but Paul was making an allegory after all. He is entitled to quote half a story to educate the already knowing Gentiles on why in the new covenant they are on equal footing with the Jews where salvation is involved. Really, Genesis is a well-known book among the Jews. There is no reason for Paul to hide anything.
Because of the allegation by Islam that the Bible is “corrupted”, God in Quran accuse the Jews and Christians of corrupting the Bible by displacing its words, and that exactly fits that verse by Paul…😦
Gosh, and you really think they are correct?
*
1)The Cow chapter( Surat Al-Baqarah) 75:" Do you covet that they will believe in you ,while a party of them used to hear the word of Allah , then falsify it after they understood it, and they know that "
2- Women chapter (Surat An-Nisa’) 46:" Among those who are Jews, there are some who displace words from their right places"
3- The Table chapter (Surat Al-Ma’idah’) 13." They change the words from their right places and have abandoned a good part of the Message that was sent to them.
4- The Table chapter (Surat Al-Ma’idah’) 41:"… And of the Jews are men who listen eagerly to lies…They displace some words from their right places"*

If they are referring to the above verses, then they do not know their stuff. Because some of their scholars such as Imam Al-Baydawy and Imam Al-Razy didn’t think so.

These verses refer to a certain group of Jews who after understanding the word of God, falsified it. It wasn’t the text of the Bible that was falsified, but their exegesis. Please note that it refers to a select group of Jews only, not the entire Christian population. We suspect those Jews were heretics because they spread a gospel unlike that was taught elsewhere which include Mary being another God as quoted in the Quran. Also note that the verses didn’t say that those Jews heard the falsified text, but that after they heard the text, understood it, then falsified it. Big difference. Third note, the above verses didn’t refer to Christians but Jews. And lastly, if someone wants to move text around in their own personal diaries of Holy Scriptures, feel free to do so. There are thousands and thousands of documents out there still showing the original placings. This group of Jews have no way of altering the world wide distribution of Holy Scriptures. Very certainly our Bible didn’t come from their version.

Have faith in the Bible. Even the Quran admits it is the word of God.

Sam, in that culture, the woman’s word was not authoritative. Consider the Apostles on Easter Sunday. None of them believed the words of Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, or of Salome regarding Jesus’ empty tomb. Peter (and John) had to go and see for themselves. (Mark 16:11, Luke 24:10-11, John 20:2-4)

The Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well went and told the town about Jesus. But, they did not believe her until they heard Jesus Himself. Then, they told her “We no longer believe because of what you said, but because we have heard Him ourselves” (John 4:42)

What was authoritative? What would the men of that day listen to and take to heart? The scriptures, in which Sarah’s words were contained.

Nothing wrong here at all, as I see it.

Sam,

Your last comments were what I was sensing in your concerns.

Sacred Scripture is in essence – Jesus, the Living Word. Sacred Scriptures is summed in Jesus Christ. That is because Jesus is the source and means of salvation, restoration in His redeeming works, to become new men in Him.

The Jewish people were chosen by God. It is not fully clear to Scriptural scholars as to why. There is the common thought that it was the Hebrew people who believed in One True God, but I read a reference one time that there had been other ancients who also believed in one god.

So in humility we must accept the Hebrew calling of being chosen. Because we find our real meaning of who we are as people and as individuals in Christ.

Salvation history was fulfilled in Christ. In the Old Testament we have many people who are like people today, who succeeded, were troubled, confused, felt lost, those who failed and were truly lost, human triumphs and successes.

We also learn through Moses the 10 commandments, which are written on the souls, however vaguely in a way, on our hearts and speak to us through our conscience. We have an innate sense of right and wrong.

No Jews were allowed to enter heaven until Christ’s resurrection.

And what follows the New Testament and Epistles, is the new testament of faith found in the Church and the lives of the saints, our continued salvation history that is now – not defined by race or gende --r but the new life in Christ.

The lives of the saints and the different churches reflect the great and universal diversity of the Church, – but their charisms always affirmed the truth of Jesus Christ.

Hagar and her descendants were blessed. When Muslims are in good relationship with Christians, both are greatly blessed by God.

God has no favorites.

Sacred Scripture always works through a gathering of people, not individuals unaccountable to no one. The Holy Spirit is always affirmed by those chosen by God to represent His authority. In Scripture we see Him and His will at work in both men and women, but all united by common faith.

Catholicism is essentially communion realized here on earth. It is imperfect but will be perfectly realized as the New Jerusalem when Christ brings us a new heaven and earth.

The four marks of the Catholic (universal) Christian Church is the oneness – the sacred unity that transcends gender, culture, ecclesial rank, geography and politics.

She is also holy. The Church’s holiness is not found in us, but in Christ alone – His Word and sacraments. Christ is calling all peoples in all times and all places to come to Him and His life.

The Church is apostolic, meaning our faith comes down from the apostles who were chosen witnesses by Christ Himself. In fact the Book of Acts attests to the reality the Apostles came to understand that they were chosen before they were born to come at the appointed time by Christ. And it is through the Holy Spirit, the transmission of faith is passed down to every generation.

The Church is one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic.

We cannot look at individuals as entities of their own, but as part of the communion of faith. We need the help of the Holy Spirit to recognize Him at work in people of the Bible.
So it is good you have the translation of Scripture that the Apostles used.

The interpretation of Sacred Scriptures that anticipated the Messiah found in Christ is the Septuagint. And the 7 books of the Sacred Scripture the Catholic Church uses goes back to those selected by 70 Jewish rabbis 200 years before Christ. These books are such as Ecclesiastics, Wisdom, Sirach, Maccabees, etc.

So I know your situation. We Catholics do not look at individual phrases in themselves, but every word and phrase of Scripture is connected to each other found in the witness of its believers. Pray the Holy Spirit draw you closer into communion with the universal church. I will pray for you.

Paul said according to NIV, KJV, and DRA versions of the Bible:
**
*****(Galatians 4:30)NIV:
***"But what does Scripture say? “Get rid of the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with the free woman’s son.”
**
***(Galatians 4:30)KJV:
***“Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.”
**
***(Galatians 4:30)DRA:
***“But what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son; for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the free woman.”

The actual Scripture which Paul is referring to is (Genesis 21:10) :
Sarah said to Abraham, “Get rid of that slave woman and her son, for that woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac.”

I don’t understand how Paul did not include that in his quote, when someone says “the Scripture says” it implies that the "Holy Spirit" is saying that, but actually in that particular quote "Sarah" was the one who said that.

For example, I cannot say “the Scripture says” and quote “Satan” !!!

:(:(😦 To be honest with you this is a very serious issue for me:
  1. Because of that wrong quote referenced by Paul.
  2. Paul’s tone in that letter towards “Hagar”, because even GOD himself showed sympathy towards her in (Genesis 21) and Paul did not !!!
Sam ~

I’m not quite sure why you are hung up with Galatians 4.

Are you saying that Paul should have said:

But what DID SARAH SAY TO ABRAHAM “Get rid of the slave woman, HAGAR, and her son, ISHMAEL for HAGAR’S son will never share in the inheritance SARAH’S son ISAAC.

The Greek Bible states:

ἀλλὰ τί λέγει ἡ γραφή; ἔκβαλε τὴν παιδίσκην καὶ τὸν υἱὸν αὐτῆς· οὐ μὴ γὰρ κληρονομήσει ὁ υἱὸς τῆς παιδίσκης μετὰ τοῦ υἱοῦ τῆς ἐλευθέρας.

The word in the navy font can mean a few things but the basic translation means **“written” **

The word λέγει means “say”

If you are angry that Sarahs/Hagars name is not mentioned, Sarah was not important to scripture, other than she received God’s word what she would give birth to Isaac.

Judaism at the time of the Old Testament was pro men… 😃

Anyway my dear old friend ~ do not let this upset you.

There are others in the Bible who have said>… for scripture says…

Here’s an example:

1 Timothy 5-18
For Scripture says, “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain,” and “The worker deserves his wages.”

Timothy did NOT state that this scripture is in Deuteronomy & Leviticus…

Also

John 19-37
These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken,” 37and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.”

John did NOT State that this scripture is in Zechariah

Be well Sam ~

One thing came to me, Abraham was the father of the Hebrew people, the Jews, through Sarah. The Jewish lineage brought us Christ.

Abraham is likewise the father of Hagar’s descendents as well.

A foot note in a Catholic bible, St. Joseph’s, it states that because of our faith, we are now all descendents of Sarah.

And another note that Abraham is the father of both Jews and other Semitic, (Arab) people, so those who are not Christian at this time, are still related to the Jews through him. Half brothers.

And God said in the Old Testament, nothing is more pleasing to Him when neighbors treat each other as brethren.

Our foundation is family. Christ ties up the differences of lineage and makes us adopted sons and daughters to the Father.

You cannot have family without the mother. She is the one who nurtures and passes on life.

So women and their witness of faith are truly a witness in all of Sacred Scrpture.

Another footnote;…Catholics are Ecclesial Deists. We are not fundamentalists. We are a gathering of peoples whose common unity is the Lord.

Christ chose His apostles and we know from Scripture they were a faithless, argumentative lot with all their human weaknesses. But in spite of that, they were chosen and called to teach and witness and heal and lay down churches in the Lord. St. Peter was chosen to be the rock, the foundation of the Church. How many minutes later did Peter tell the Lord not to go through with His Passion and death, and then to be addressed by the Lord,
Get behind Me, Satan, for you think as men do.’

So don’t get up hung as Jakasaki says, on persons or passages or parts of Scripture without recognizing there is no perfection in any of us, including the Pope, until we are perfected and united with the Lord in heaven.

We are all in the same boat, just as Sarah was. The Holy Spirit carries us forward ever closer to the Lord each day, if we remain in the state of grace, that allows us to have faith, hope, and charity.

You may have a case of scruples as well focusing on such a small passage. We all have that. Pray to the Lord to take it away and give you His peace and increase of understanding, a gift of the Holy Spirit. Seek only the truth of the Word of God.

Compare this with Mary’s Magnificat:

Luke 1:46-55
Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition (RSVCE)
46 And Mary said,

Mary’s Song of Praise

“My soul magnifies the Lord,
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48 for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden.
For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed;
49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
50 And his mercy is on those who fear him
from generation to generation.
51 He has shown strength with his arm,
he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts,
52 he has put down the mighty from their thrones,
and exalted those of low degree;
53 he has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent empty away.
54 He has helped his servant Israel,
in remembrance of his mercy,
55 as he spoke to our fathers,
to Abraham and to his posterity for ever.”

Dear Sam, you know when one is quoting in speech passages from the Bible, if it is by memory that you are doing so, you will never have it perfectly right. But enough to make your point. An example of this is** Mohamed who in the Koran quotes so many inaccurate passages of the Old Testament and the New Testament**, that some times even one wonders if he ever read them, or was just reported speech from other people what he quote.

So do not get so worry about it, the profound meaning does not change.😉
I personally think that verse is not inspired by the Holy Spirit, that is why it’s ambiguous!, if it had been really inspired by the Holy Spirit, then it would be completely different and maybe that story itself would not have mentioned at all, because why would GOD re-quote a racial discrimination verse for an incident which will never reoccur again!
**I can see here your whole point about all your disagreement. **

First: I do not believe it was a racial discrimination that event with Sarah and Hagar, her Egyptian maid.
Hagar had a son with Abraham.** She got proud about it and started to look down on Sarah**. This is not a racial discrimination but a despise situation in which the maid now thought herself the important one. After Sarah complained about this to Abraham he told her to do with the maid as she wished: “And when Sarah dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face.” But then came back and submitted herself to Sarah.

We are, the ones who believe in Christ, like Saint Paul is saying in this passage that you quote partially:

“28 Now we, brethren, like Isaac, are children of promise. 29 But as at that time he who was born according to the flesh** persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit**, so it is now. 30 But what does the scripture say? “Cast out the slave and her son; for the son of the slave shall not inherit with the son of the free woman.” 31 So, brethren, we are not children of the slave but of the free woman.”

Do you understand what Saint Paul is saying: that you and me and everyone who believes in Christ are like the son of the free woman, we who have been born in the Spirit, and that are, as it were, like Isaac, children of the promise.
Therefore the ones that are not jet born of the Spirit, still in the flesh and behave like the son of Hagar, Ishmael, of whom the angel precisely told Hagar:

“12 And he will be a wild man;** his hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him**; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.”

Second: Now you can see how the Holy Spirit is using Saint Paul to make a difference, not between races, but between people who have been born in the Spirit and the ones who still in the flesh. And we know which are the works of the flesh:

“17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh; for these are opposed to each other, to prevent you from doing what you would. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit you are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are plain:** fornication, impurity, licentiousness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, anger, selfishness, dissension, party spirit, 21 envy,** drunkenness, carousing, and the like**. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” Gal 5 17-24

**THIS IS THE REAL DIVISION AMONG PEOPLES: THE ONES BORN IN THE SPIRIT AND THE ONES WHO CONTINUE TO BE IN THE FLESH. **

I hope you can understand Saint Paul now better… if not, I really tried my best:D

In the love of the truth,

Gloria

Sam,

I’m not certain how you’re asserting that when Paul writes, “Scripture says,” what he means is “the Holy Spirit says.” Yes, Scripture is inspired by the Holy Spirit; yet, in the context of this passage, Paul identifies that he’s talking about an allegory in Scripture. Here, “these women represent two covenants” (Gal 4:24). Hagar corresponds to the earthly Jerusalem (and slavery) and Sarah corresponds to the “Jerusalem above” (Gal 4:26) and freedom.

So, when Paul quotes Scripture, he is demonstrating that what the heavenly Jerusalem says is that “the son of the slave woman” (i.e., those in earthly Jerusalem) “‘shall not share the inheritance with the son’ of the freeborn” (i.e., those who are conformed to the heavenly Jerusalem). Does Paul need to say “Sarah said this”? No! He’s already established that this is allegory, and that, allegorically speaking, this is what the implication of the heavenly Jerusalem is, vis-a-vis the earthly Jerusalem!

Hagar was after all a slave girl with not many rights. And see how she look with contempt on Sarai the minute she conceived? Not very wise of her to treat her mistress that way isn’t it?
We cannot judge Hager, we don’t know what type of treatment Sarah was giving her…
These verses refer to a certain group of Jews who after understanding the word of God, falsified it. It wasn’t the text of the Bible that was falsified, but their exegesis. Please note that it refers to a select group of Jews only, not the entire Christian population.
You are correct, but the Christians also mentioned in many hadiths, take for example this one:
*Sahih Bukhari, Book 92, Volume 9, Number 461:
*
*Narrated Ubaidullah:
"Ibn 'Abbas said, “Why do you ask the people of the scripture about anything while your Book (Quran) which has been revealed to Allah’s Apostle is newer and the latest? You read it pure, undistorted and unchanged, and Allah has told you that the people of the scripture (Jews and Christians) changed their scripture and distorted it, and wrote the scripture with their own hands and said, ‘It is from Allah,’ to sell it for a little gain. Does not the knowledge which has come to you prevent you from asking them about anything? No, by Allah, we have never seen any man from them asking you regarding what has been revealed to you!”
*

in that culture, the woman’s word was not authoritative.
I would agree with you, but do you think that was an excuse for a saint like Paul to manipulate the words to satisfy the culture at that time!!!

So don’t get up hung as Jakasaki says, on persons or passages or parts of Scripture without recognizing there is no perfection in any of us, including the Pope, until we are perfected and united with the Lord in heaven.
That is why I know the “perfection” is only for GOD, so when we always say that the Bible is inspired by the Holy Spirit, then we should assume it’s 100% perfect, unless it’s otherwise written by normal people whom could make mistakes, therefore, it should not be called a heavenly inspired book…

Sam,

Does the Scripture not say what is being quoted?

Scripture is being referred to as the books and not the person. If Paul would have said that Abraham said it, then it would be an issue.

For example,

After reading your post, I go and post on another forum saying - a post at CAF said that there is “a serious issue in Paul’s “Epistle to the Galatians” !”. But I don’t mention your name.

Is it not true that there is thread on CAF that says that?

In like manner, when Paul says that Scriptures say what you quoted in Gal 4:30. It is also true and correct.

🙂 My Sister in Christ,

I was waiting for your Greek language skills…
Are you saying that Paul should have said:

But what DID SARAH SAY TO ABRAHAM “Get rid of the slave woman, HAGAR, and her son, ISHMAEL for HAGAR’S son will never share in the inheritance SARAH’S son ISAAC.
Exactly. 👍👍👍
The Greek Bible states:

ἀλλὰ τί λέγει ἡ γραφή; ἔκβαλε τὴν παιδίσκην καὶ τὸν υἱὸν αὐτῆς· οὐ μὴ γὰρ κληρονομήσει ὁ υἱὸς τῆς παιδίσκης μετὰ τοῦ υἱοῦ τῆς ἐλευθέρας.

The word in the navy font can mean a few things but the basic translation means **“written” **

The word λέγει means “say”
Please complete your translation:

ἀλλὰ =
τί =
λέγει = “say”
ἡ =
γραφή = written

Sister in Christ, that was exactly my point, when we say “the scripture says” or “it’s written in the scripture” we always refer to a divine/ritual instruction NOT a “story” or an “incident”, and ALL the verses you have mentioned above, they all reference to a divan/ritual instruction.

So I think Paul had to mention “Sarah” name because that verse is not divan/ritual instruction.

Second: Now you can see how the Holy Spirit is using Saint Paul to make a difference, not between races, but between people who have been born in the Spirit and the ones who still in the flesh. And we know which are the works of the flesh:

I have no issue with Galatians 5.
