Whats the problem? the preist performing the communion should refuse to give it. if he does give it to them knowingthat they are pro abortion. then he should be relieved of his duties. simple as that really.
You know as well as I, we “lay” people have no say in the matter other than venting our disgust. The Church has apologized only twice, that I know of, in its 2000 year history. Once to the Jews for standing back and not being vocal and active during the Holocaust and just the other day when Benedict apologized for the sexual abuse that occurred. I agree, the priests giving Communion should have taken a stand and said NO, this is not right. I will hear their confessions first. The priest is as much at fault as our illustrious Senator and members of Congress. These people are poor examples of members of the Church. Unfortunately, non-Catholics probably don’t hear the ire expressed by those who know better. 😦

Wouldn’t it be dandy if the pro abortion politicians were pulled aside before mass started and told to refrane from coming forward?

What message will this send to the faithful when they see these politicians receive communion and basically tell the world that there is no visible consequence for outright dissention? Why is it so hard to confront these politicians with the TRUTH and hand down the consequence?
The truth of the matter can only be one of two possibilities…

  1. *]The vast majority of the hierarchy fear men rather than God.
*]The vast majority of the hierarchy no longer believe in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, as in 1 Corinthians 11:27.
The first is somewhat easier to stomach than the second. The second is too scary to even contemplate.

In either case, we need to pray for our priests and bishops. Pray hard and pray often!!!

    Peace in Christ,

Under the Old Testament Law, no one could be saved because no one could follow the law perfectly.

Jesus came and he condems NO ONE. He saves us from our sins because of his body and blood sacrificed for all.

We all have a choice to accept or reject him and his church. Jesus never turned away sinners who came to him. If Nancy and Rudi and John K and even Teddy come to Jesus he will not turn them away. They are sinners just like we all are. If they are truly sorry for their sins and come to him, Christ will forgive them and invite them to his father’s house.

If they are being frauds by coming forward, then nothing has changed for them. They are people of the law of the old testament and rather than blessings of the Holy Eucharist they eating and drinking even worse punishment upon their own souls in this world and the next because Jesus came to forgive those who believe in him and his father’s mercy; and they don’t believe, but are pretenders by taking communion.

We need not worry about the appearances of this and that. Let all come to Jesus and receive forgivness. When we do this we will be more like Jesus and less like the scribes and Pharisees who likewise condemned people for a career. Please no communion police! We know not the moment when there is a new heart put into a person, and we could be the obstacle of God’s grace and forgiveness for our brothers and sisters.

This is all well and good for Catholics who KNOW their faith, who practice it with obedience and trust. Seeing Pelosi, et al receive Communion without any public acknowledgement of repentence will not confuse ME or others who are firm in their committment to Christ. HOWEVER, when my fallen-away friend comes to Mass with me, out of curiosity or some sentimental desire to see “what’s changed”, and does not hesitate for a moment to receive Communion because “everyone else does”, how do I even attempt to correct the error in his theology when the example has been set at a Papal Mass? How do Catholics evangelize the truth to our confused brothers and sisters when all around them they see unrepentent dissenters publicly mock the Church?

Maybe I’ve got it all wrong. Maybe I’ve misinterpreted Christ’s commission to His followers. Maybe I’ve read too much into St. Paul’s words to the early Christians. Maybe we have absolutely no obligation to either correct our brethren or defend our Lord.

I know that I am looking for clarity from our leaders. If it is not for us to be concerned about the salvation of others, then I will gladly encourage EVERYONE to receive Communion. If the Holy Father has no influence in a Papal Mass at which he is presiding, and the bishops and priests who co-celebrate with lack the authority to refuse Communion, then this is something we, as Catholics, should know.

I haven’t read all the posts in this thread so sorry if this is a repeat of comments already made.

I had the impression by everything I’ve read about and from Our Holy Father, Cardinal Arinze, etc. that Catholics not in full Communion with the Church should not receive Communion. I also thought that our Bishops and priests have the obligation to protect our Lord in the Eucharist and also to help their flocks to salvation. Allowing these politicians to receive Communion is doing neither, and quite the contrary, is leading them to damnation according to St. Paul.

I am deeply disappointed in Pope Benedict on this matter. I realize I don’t know what he may have wanted or even required to be said or done given this situation, but it appears that nothing was done and nothing will be. Our American Bishops can now say *“If the Holy Father allowed them to receive Communion, who am I to deny? He obviously does not want us regulating this type of situation.”.
*
I think irreparable harm has been done.

It has given SCANDAL which is a serious sin.

When I was a kid in parochial schools, I was taught giving SCANDAL was a BIG sin. Has that changed? The world was looking on. Guliani, Kennedy, Pelosi, Kerry and others who call themselves Catholic, but go against the Church"s teachings on abortion and then have the temerity to receive Commuinion, I think, gave a GREAT SCANDAL to the Church. Because of their visiblity, they are even more responsible for their actions. I think they should be publicly rebuked, but that won’t happen. There have always been errors (I am NOT talking about Dogma/Doctrine) committed in the name of the Church by those who are "said " to best represent her and unfortunately this includes not only laity, but priests, bishops, cardinals and somtimes the one at the highest level in the church. This ignoring of this public display is called politics. .

Is there anyone at the Vatican who is the contact for such things and who is responsible for working with host countries on Papal Masses? I would like to respectfully request an explanation, and suggest that such an explanation be made public. This has caused even more confusion.

All this priest bashing and Pope bashing is making me ill. PELOSI and KENNEDY are the ones making fools of themselves by going to to receive. That is the bigger sin. For all the priest who is giving out Communion knows, maybe they went to Confession before receiving.

Second guessing our Church leaders, in good standing mind you, sound very much like the Protestant Church of Me.

To discuss the merits of not giving Communion to pro-abortion politician is one thing, but to slander with names of our holy shepherds is another.

Stop judging our priests and look all the good that has come about from our Holy Father’s stay in our country. I’ll bet a lot of people who were on the fence about abortion have come off the fence and joined at least the anti-abortion side, if not the pro-lilfe side.

I read a report saying that Kennedy did not go up to receive. What happened wsa that the priest went down to him to give him Holy Communion before everyone else?

I would like to know too. I would be glad to “respectfully” send an email, or letter. 😃

I agree there is too much Pope, Cardinal, Bishop, Priest bashing. I am not bashing all of them, but I would like to know why the leaders of the church have stood back and allowed Scandal to occur. Many, many millions of people were watching. We have enough misinformation about what the Church does and doesn’t approve of for these leaders to stand back and allow such a blatent disregard of the Church’s teachings in so important an issue. 🙂 Peace

Very well said. This reflects my sentiments exactly, just much more eloquently than I could have posted. Questioning why they allowed something to occur that our Holy Father and others have said should not occur is a legitimate question to respectfully ask. I just want to know who to ask who can actually provide an answer.

You are by Baptism, a priest in the order of Melk. teach your friends what they are doing by following the example of these politicians is wrong. I am a public school teacher and when my students do bad things, I am shamed, just like our Holy Father Pope B. expressed to the USA church, but you still teach the truth and when bad things happen, which is inevidible, you will be justified as a faithful servant…
God created our world, yet there is sin in his creation. Does this mean God is in error? NO WAY. God is love, people sin and always will. It is no reflection on his holy church, just those who do evil. It will get more confusing in the near future, but keep your faith; because of your faith and especially your love you will effect more people than you can ever know. I know I am not perfect, but my church teaches love and forgiveness through the Catechism and the Bible. Those who seek the truth will find him, those who are pretnders for gain will be exposed, but not by me or you or the church;;;but by themselves in front of all creation in the days to come. CHRIST HAS DIED…CHRIST IS RISEN…CHRIST WILL COME AGAIN!
AMEN…

In the end, it will be up to the penitent to determine whether or not he is worthy to receive the Lord of Heaven and Earth in Holy Communion. There’s no way he couldn’t know-- if he has gone to confession and has not committed a mortal sin hence, he is in a state of grace and could receive Holy Communion. Otherwise, he is not, and if still he insists on receiving Holy Communion, woe to him!

There is no way for the Holy Father to know beyond any doubt whether or not one is worthy to receive Holy Communion. Besides, even if he has any doubt, charity will compel him to err on the generous side.

According to Archbishop Burke:
…Pope John Paul II then proceeded to discuss the case of grave public sin, relating the self-judgment of unworthiness to receive to the refusal of Holy Communion to the person remaining in manifest grievous sin. He declared:
The judgment of one’s state of grace obviously belongs only to the person involved, since it is a question of examining one’s conscience. However, in cases of outward conduct which is seriously, clearly and steadfastly contrary to the moral norm, the Church, in her pastoral concern for the good order of the community and out of respect for the sacrament, cannot fail to feel directly involved. The Code of Canon Law refers to the situation of a manifest lack of proper moral disposition when it states that those who obstinately persist in manifest grave sin are not to be admitted to Eucharistic communion.
therealpresence.org/eucharst/holycom/denial.htm
And according to Cardinal Ratzinger:
When “these precautionary measures have not had their effect or in which they were not possible,” and the person in question, with obstinate persistence, still presents himself to receive the Holy Eucharist, “the minister of Holy Communion must refuse to distribute it” (cf. Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts Declaration “Holy Communion and Divorced, Civilly Remarried Catholics” [2002], nos. 3-4). This decision, properly speaking, is not a sanction or a penalty. Nor is the minister of Holy Communion passing judgment on the person’s subjective guilt, but rather is reacting to the person’s public unworthiness to receive Holy Communion due to an objective situation of sin.
