I agree with you.The solution is to do those things in our churches, lodges, clubs, etc. (what is stopping you?) rather than to stop government from doing them. If the churches, etc. did those jobs, government would not have to do it. And I do not buy the argument that the churches, etc. don’t do these things because government is doing them. They could always do more.
I think that one reason why so many people are abandoning “church” (Catholic and Protestant) is that they don’t see a reason to go. The music is probably not to their taste, the speaker is definitely not entertaining or interesting, the people are either exuberantly welcoming or closed-off and unwelcoming, and there’s really nothing much to do at church other than attend services and maybe join a study group (which you will end up missing most weeks because of work, sickness, or family emergencies.
EVERYTHING that is offered by a church (music, special speakers, friends and socializing, and activities–is offered by bars, clubs, sports, work, etc., and these places do a pretty good job. Or many people are perfectly happy to just stay home and play with their electronic devices.
But when the churches have charitble outreach programs–well, LeafByNiggle, I don’t know if it’s the same where you are, but here, people are coming out of the woodwork to volunteer for all the COVID-19 outreaches by many of our churches of all denominations-- food drives/distribution, "Happy Birthday parades (in cars) for local kids, calls to Senior Citizens to make sure they’re alright, and all kinds of kind acts that are truly a blessing in the community!
People who have never BEEN in these churches or any church are coming out to volunteer to help with good works!
So perhaps if we churched people took up the task of doing “good works”, we would finally see some growth in our membership! Matthew 25: 31-46! It would certainly make it easier for people to “see Jesus.”
