Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez compares refugees to baby Jesus

She was elected by the same Cult-of-Personality that elected President Obama. This doesn’t surprise me.

Jesus was absolutely a refugee when he went to Egypt, but not in the manger. I doubt this leftist/socialist/Democrat darling has any idea that Jesus went to Egypt.
 
As usual, when Democrats try to apply Scripture to politics, they fail miserably. The Holy Family moved from one part of the Roman Empire to the other, basically like moving across state lines within the US. No illegal incursions on anyone else’s territory involved. 🙂

She was elected by the people of her district, in the boroughs of Queens and the Bronx, in New York City.

I grew up in that district, and lived there as an adult for many years. I know it, and the people there, like the back of my hand.

They’re a pretty hard-headed bunch, not much given to cults of personality.

They rejected their incumbent, Queens County boss Joe Crowley, and good riddance.

Ms. Ocasio-Cortez’s election had nothing to do with a “cult of personality” and everything to do with local politics.

Thank you, please let me clarify.

I shouldn’t have said she was “elected” by the “cult of personality”, but rather she is elevated to a national stature by the “cult of personality”.
 
But if 80% or so of claimants to refugee status are disapproved, what is the merit in open borders? If one looks at the pictures of the caravan members, none appear ill-fed. None appear ill-clothed. Possibly some are sick, but it’s not clearly so. Obviously, none are in prison. Some have paid large sums to the coyotes to get there. They’re free to go anywhere other than into the U.S. Mexico offered to let them stay, but they didn’t want to because the U.S. has a much better economy and welfare system. Mexico, it appears, isn’t “good enough” for them.

If Jesus had moved to Rome in order to make more money than He could in Palestine, and advocated for freer access to Roman benefits, then I think we could think of this situation as a parallel. But He didn’t.
 
Comparing refugees to the baby Jesus is not that much of a stretch. I’m sure many priests used this analogy in their Christmas homilies. In fact, the holy family were refugees when they has to flee Herod.
 
Some days I’m thankful that “Love your neighbor as yourself,” is so simple that even a dunce like me can understand it.

Joseph took his family from one part of the Roman Empire to another. He took his family out of the Herodian Kingdom, which existed as a subordinate state within the primary governance of the Roman Empire. It is akin to moving from one U.S. state to another in order to avoid the law of one state. The comparison to the current refugee situation is not apt.

Interesting, if not troubling, that even when assuming that there is no comparison in the plight of the Holy Family and Central and South American refugees that 7 of 15 posts on this Catholic website disregard the suffering of the refugees and instead of even expressing a bit of compassion, use such horrific human suffering as political fodder. Sad.

No, it’s not.

Unless you’re prepared to make the case that Nebraska, say, would order the death of male children, so a family moved to Oregon to save the life of their new baby boy, it’s in no way analogous.

The Roman Empire largely left local law and custom intact as much as possible (cf. the actions of Pontius Pilate). Moving from, let us say, the province of Britain to Judea was not at all comparable to moving from New York to Connecticut.
 
In my parishes Prayers for the Faithful- we prayed that the refugee and immigrant may not be turned away.

This is the consistent message of the Holy Father and the Bishops.
 
And they left their people, and their homes, to escape a dangerous situation, going to a foreign land with foreign people and foreign customs, in the hopes that their son’s life will be spared.

Seems pretty apt to me.
